Title: Dengu m06 Build
Post by: ArAddict on June 20, 2017, 02:22:27 PM
Hi, my first post here. Been reading alot and getting alot of tips before choosing my frame to build on since I grown tired of my current hardtail with a long chainstay and a 70" headset angel throwing me OTB way to often when I go for the more aggressive trails. Its a rocket on the easy flats but my riding style is mixed mostly XC, trails, Adventure Racing and MTB-O. For gravel and easy riding im always on my CX-bike.

Placed my order today on a 21" m06 after tossing lots of questions to Kelsey from Dengfu. The plan is to reuse all the stuff from my current hardtail (Cube ELITE SUPER HPC SLT 29 2014) and complete with a manitou macleod damper and some other stuff needed.

This is my first FS MTB build, only built a CX bike before. Will update this post as the build goes along, the goal is to build a fun FS bike hopefully under 10kg.

Anyone know which bushings to order for the Manitou MacLeod for this frame with the standard fitted DU bushings on the damper ?

If you mean sizing, the rear is 22.2x8, front might vary, mine was 21.5x8, but other guys reported 21.85x8. Better measure everything yourself to be sure.

Thanks, I have ordered 1 x 22.2x8 and 1 x 21.8x8, lets see if they fit once all the parts arrive. I asked today about the status on the frame and got the reply that is being produced.

All parts have been ordered from Bike24 and Bike-discount (updated buildlist). Latest news on the frame is that its being producred. Good thing im not in a hurry with this build.

One thing i've noticed when dealing with Dengfu, they seem to build frames to order. I ran into this when i purchased a road frame from them. The good thing about this though is they are not selling you a frame that was massed produced and just sitting around waiting to be sold. They build them one at a time when ordered and this gives you a chance to have a frame with any previous issues sorted out. You are getting the latest and greatest they have to offer in the frame you desire. Good thing is i have two bikes i can ride while waiting for delivery of my name frame  ;)

Yes it seems like it, I was told 7-10 delivery time, but I guess that ment AFTER production and paint :). Im glad to recive a brand new produced frame since Im in no hurry, still riding the donor bike, a 8.7kg HT and waiting for all the other parts in the meantime.

Still no information from Kelsey about the frame being produced yet or not...sent a mail yesterday asking for status. This is quiet annoying since I only read good things about Deng fu, I hope they deliver it soon.

I know how you feel. My road bike from Dengfu took about a month before being shipped. You'll have to be a little patient with them. Even though it took a while for them to build and paint my frame, i never felt like i was being jerked around. Like we talked about before, they do build and paint them to order and you'll see that quality when you do receive your frame  ;D I'm not trying to think about my M06 coming right now. I'm thinking if i put it out of my mind and it shows up one day i'll be pleasantly surprised  ???

Got the same reply as last time, that its being produced. Its hard to be patience when you want something now :)

Frame arrived last week but I been abroad so picked it up this morning. Unpacked it and it seems in good shape, quality looks perfect, no imperfections or so. Sofar only tested to install the manitou Macleod rear shock and it fitted with no issues with the bushings I ordered. Unfortunatly I ordered the wrong Milo remote kit which is for front forks and not rear so I need to order the correct one to fit a remote.

The problem now is my bike wasnt on my flight home yesterday so Im waiting for British Airways to deliver it to my house so I can start picking parts off my old bike.

Ill post pictures of the build here:

Added more pictures of the progress today:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B-va9X8su_l6T2xPZ1hCdmRRTXM

- Removed everything from the old frame and cleaned and greased groupset etc.
- Installed  RF BB92 Chinch bottom bracket , fitted without any issues to the frame (used parktools)
- Installed RaceFace Next SL crank (32T atm)
- Installed XX1 rear derailluer, new internal cable, new KMC chain and tuned the gears
- Installed rear Formula R1 Racing 160mm brake but realized the old hose (which didnt run internal was too short so ordered a new hose)
- Installed Rockshox SID XX fork, front Formula R1 racing 180mm brake
- Installed seatpost, stem, handlebar, grips etc

Todo:
- fix play in rear shock lower mount (0,5-1mm)
- bleed front brake
- install new hose and bleed rear brake
- tune suspension

So the bike is almost complete, rode it around the house wihout a rear break but found some play in the lower fitting of the rear shock, its only 0,5mm but I can feel it lifting the bike so will fit a nylon shim there tomorrow, then do some more testing and tuning. Too early for any first impressions but it does feel very different from my old HT with the lower, longer look and less agressive headangel..quality seems solid.

Thx, no the cube frame is from Cube, its a cube elite super hpc slt 29 2014, very stiff and light.

Did a testride today without rear brake and the bike gives a very nice first impression. Had to exchange the KMC chain for a XX1 since the KMC chain sounded horrible. Well the bike climbs well, fast handling and quite stable when pedaling hard. Ofc I need to break in and tune the Manitou MacLeod damper which atm feels kinda soggy ;) Still have some play in the rear damper bushing but a new one is on the way. Took the whole rear triangle apart to check but thats solid, just filled som more grease in the bearings.

Added some pics.

I like the little video! I had issues with my chain as well. This is my first go around with Shimano mtb gear. I went with the 11 speed Shimano chain to go along with the XTR derailleur and hated it. Sounded like crap from the minute i installed it. Even checked the directions a couple of time to make sure it was spinning in the correct direction because it's a directional chain. The snap off pin is a joke!!! Needless to say the chain broke twice about 3 miles in the ride both times. Threw that chain out and went with a KMC. Silence..........Shifts perfectly too!!!

Did you use torque wrench during assembly? If true, what torque value for those huge heads? Any photos? The 036 frame has recommended value printed on, but not the M06, I assume something in 10nm range should be enough.

I did use a torque wrench and set em all around 6 nm, might not be enough but will recheck them after afew rides and tighten them to 8-9nm if not.

Thx, I do need to get rid of the ht-standing-up-in-every-bumpy-section-habit :) Wierd my brand new KMC chain sounds and shifts terrible. I checked the wear on the old XX1 chain thinking perhaps the cassett needs replacment buts its well within the limits so ill use that until its time to replace cassett and chain, will also order an Absolute Black oval 34T chainring but it does look abit tight with the frame, anyone tested 34,36 or 38T chainrings on this frame ?

I run a 30T AB oval chainring. There is a lot of climbing here, especially technical climbing with a lot of square hits! I was surprised how closely the chainring is to the chainstay when rotated. I'd be shocked if a 34T clears. The oval shape definitely hurts clearance.

I run a round 34t on a Sram GX crankset without any issue on M06!

Did a 3h ride today, mostly in massive rainfall on trails  but I really like the bike alot! Handling is superb, it climbs well and handles well, I can really feel the slacker headangle when going up/downhill or over bigger roots and rocks, gives more confidence. The Manitou Macleod rear shock is getting smoother with each ride (needs 20+ hours to break in). The only thing I dont like about the shock is that its not solid on locked position it still gives around 5-10mm compression when pedaling hard. Perhaps it will get better when broken in properly? Still waiting for rear shock remote, longer rear brakehose to run internal and some small parts but overall its finished. Weight atm 10.3kg with 2.25 Rocket Rons pacestar.

Bike is now 99% done, installed & bled rear brake, installed manitou macleod remote, lizardskin chainstay protection, new sidefeed bottlecage. Realized the bottlecage is still too close to the rear shock and remote since I need to have it installed forward for the remote cable, so ended up drilling new holes in a old bottle cage which worked well with the remote. Also changed the lower rear shock bushings from 21.8mm ones to 22.2mm which elimated the play. So all in all bike is now finished, last thing is the new red grips incoming next week.

Added afew picture to the google album linked in OP.

What's up with polished up inner surface of rocker arm (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-va9X8su_l6c3ZSeDdrRmVTYVU) where the rear shock busing goes to? Did you experience clearance issues too or that's what you had to do in order for 22.2mm wide bushing to fit? My RWC bearing scratches this part unless you move it in right direction.

No clearance issuse, only that the 21.8mm bushings made the shock move alittle sideways, with the 22.2mm its solid. The polished inside om the picture looked like that from factory. I guess its the backside of where the bearing and bolt goes?

Added some short videos of todays ride to the OP album..sry for the low camera angle..I really the short chainstay , its very easy to just lift the frontwheel and put it in a better line at speed. Turns on a dime with weight behind the saddle :)

Bike is somewhat on hold, non-driveside crankarm decided to give up (RaceFace Next SL), it seems the crankarm has delaminated from the axel..seems like a common issue on these 600$ cranks..good thing mine where 2nd hand and from 2014...SO i decided to replace the whole crank with something more durable, I never liked the Raceface bottombracket quality, they wear out quick. Ordered some reliable SRAM GX-1400 cranks with a 32T chainring (Already replaced the XX1 chain and cassett wwith GX components) and a Truvalvi GXP bottom bracket so now Im just waiting for it to arrive to be able to ride some more :) Im also thinking of replacing the 2014 SID XX 100mm fork with a 120mm FOX fork..i tested my brothers bike which has the new fox 34 rythm and man what a difference! but not sure yet.

Got the missing parts yesterday and installed the new gpx bottom bracket and gx crankarms. Also changed the damper insert which was broken to a SID RL one with remote. Unfortunalty the insert came without the actual remote lever and cable but I did have a manitou remote lying around and it pulled the same amount of cable so I used that :)

Btw anyone tried running 120/130mm front fork on the m06 ? Got the option to buy a very nicly priced 2nd hand 130mm fox fork.

I'm running a 120mm fork on my M06. It's hard to say how it feels because i'm coming from an 057 hardtail with a much steeper headtube angle. According to my calculations the 120mm fork gives me approximately a 67.5 headtube angle. I'm used to the feeling now and have no issues with handling strange travel feelings. I have had to play around with air pressure to get the right amount of travel but other than that, i don't think you'll have any issues.

30mm can have more effect than it looks !

Thanks for the Rocket Ron/Maxxis comment.
I ride almost exclusively RoRo all year, by habit, and will give Maxxis a try as my next set.

I'm a huge Maxxis fan. I had run the Ikon 2.2 for a while but when i built my M06 i switched to the Ardent Race 2.2. What a difference! I get the easy rolling of the Ikons with a more trail capable tire. I could skid the rear tire anytime using the Ikons but the Ardent Race brakes much better. I really have to get on the rear break to make the Ardent Race even think about skidding. It really does bridge the gap between the Ikon and the Ardent.

So an update on the frame/bike.  I tried it with a 130mm fox fork but didnt like it when riding fast cross-country tracks, its too light upfront making it over-steer and loosing traction easy. So I went back to my 100mm SID XX. Also changed the Next SL cranks (they had started to delaminate) and basially the whole drivetrain to Sram GX except rear deraullier and shifter (still XX1) . Been playing around with the front/rear suspension settings alot and finally feel that its tuned as I want it, using the whole travel if needed but firm enough to pedal well without locking. Changed the tires from Rocket Ron to Maxxis Ikon 3C EXO 2.9 * 2-2 since the Rocket Rons  sidewalls are way to fragile for my rocky trails.  Had some issues with a creaking BB (I thought) and after removing and reinstalling it I finally realized it was actually where the seat connected to the seatpost that made the noise!

Been riding many many hours on the bike and I really love it, best bike I had. Handling is superb and its fast as any hardtail on the flats!

You seem to run a somewhat long stem. What's the stem length, frame size and your height? I'd like to compare other people setups with my own.

That's how i feel about my M06 as well. It really is faster than any hardtail I've been on and the handling is superb! Just feels totally natural. I don't have to "ride" the bike. I just get on it and do my thing and it responds  ;D

Stem is a Syntace F109 90mm, 21" frame and im 187 cm tall. I prefer a long reach so I can get into a nice aero position for long distances races which typically (sadly) has alot of gravel roads.

Wow, maybe I should at least try a lower/longer option given that I'm just 2cm lower than you, but then again everyone has different body proportions. My current setup is 19" frame and 6cm stem which feels endo-resistant, at least I did not roll over yet :) Next spring I'll see if 9cm stem rides better.

Don't forget handlebar width plays an important part of this equation too. The shorter the stem length the wider you want your bars. If you lengthen the stem to 90mm and keep the same fairly wide bars (not knowing what your bar width is of course) you might wind up with a combination that makes the steering too fast and twitchy.

That's what happened to me on my hardtail. I started out with a 90mm stem and 725mm bars. Man was that a bad combination!!! I kept the bars and went with a 60mm stem. So much better. The steering felt natural. I didn't have to think about turning input. When i built my M06 i went with a 740mm bar and a 70mm stem......perfect!!! It has been the most natural and intuitive steering i have ever felt on a bike. The moral of the story is everything comes into play when you're trying to dial a bike in for yourself. it all works as one package  ;D
