Title: Any interest in a spare nut for a Iplay 12x142 rear axle?
Post by: outriding9800 on September 28, 2014, 10:26:35 PM
i did not like the one that came with my IP-057 frame it was a loose fit. I made up two of them already. (one for me)..

I imagine they are the same as the ip-256 frame.

Any interest in them? if there is i can make up more of them.

I can also do front axles also but dont currently have aluminum that size.

I am pricing them at $5 + shipping

Note i am not a professional machinist

I made a few of these a while back. They turned out well despite my best efforts.  ;D

I just can't justify selling them at any reasonable price that covers my time, unfortunately ( since I need to take time out of my work day to sneak down to the machine shop).  This is a great deal and I would have bought one of these if you'd had them when I originally lost mine.  Good work.

Side note: add a chamfer to it to make for a more finished look. The chamfer also helped mine sit more flat against the dropout since the dropout has a small radius to it on the inside.  At least on my 256 it did.

I think mine was under 5 grams or right around there.  Made from aluminum, it should be negligible weight-wise.

Follow on question would be for Vipassana, do you find that the new one stays on better.
It seems a couple of people have lost the nut of their iPlay thru-axle.

Well, I lost my first one (the iPlay one) on my very first ride (long ride, not around the block) and I suspect it was due to me not tightening the rear axle enough after removing the wheel to apply the paint protection tape.

The one I made has stayed put now for well over 400 miles.  The advantage to the new one is you can actually use the set screw on the side of the dropout to hold the nut in place as well.  If it did come loose for some reason, with the set screw there, it will not fall out onto the trail.  See the pictures in the original post.  The iPlay nut was too small to make this set screw functional.

on my scale the original nut is 5grams.. the new one goes between 6 and 7 grams... it is a bit bigger to fit in the hole in the dropout...

I'll take one. Mine never felt secure to me for some reason.. I like the idea of being able to utilize the set screw.

I don't have my frame yet, but I'll take one. It sounds like I might need one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

^^Nah.. It's nothing you need, per say.. The one you receive with your axle will work just fine - this is just a bit more of a polished solution.

I like the aesthetics. Matches the other two silver circular shapes on the derailleur below it. Anodized colors would be frkn sweet but obviously that's a bit much for the home hobby machinist. Nice craftsmanship, outriding - Tight tolerances, and fast shipping.. Thx!

I'll take one. Mine never felt secure to me for some reason.. I like the idea of being able to utilize the set screw.
The nut on my 256 also never felt secure. 9 of 10 the nut is loose after a ride. Now I made it more secure by taking an old inner tube, cut a circle with diameter of 2 cm, made an incision in the middle and put the nut in. And then I put the nut on his place. Now it's secure enough and the last three rides it didn't came loose.

It's not a beautiful solution, but it works perfect for me.

Thought I'd bump this thread up as I was recently contacted by a forum member that has lost an axle nut and needs a replacement.

It looks like they changed the thread to a nonstandard thread.

So all new axles i dont have a nut that will work.

I think you still need the set screw even with a new axle nut.

Last week I noticed that if I tighten the set screw, then remove the axle, the nut becomes loose again.  When reinstalling the axle, I needed to re-tighten the set screw.  So if you remove the back wheel often, I can see how you will have problems with the nut coming loose more often.

Resurrection of an old thread......

What did you thread these as?  M12x 1.75?

Would you be able to make some in M12 x 1.5 to fit the DT Swiss axle?  I ordered the one that was supposed to have a nut, but did not get a nut, Vendor is supposedly shipping another axle, but I'll see how that arrives.

Need some solution, axle came lose during a race last week...
