Re: FM1002 / FM1166 - 150mm frame I had a subtle version of that top cap gap with the Carbonda OEM headset (one metal spacer), but no real gap with the FSA no.55R.

Re: Carbonda fm936 Thoughts Hard AM/enduro riding can easily wear out most stock bearings (even on branded bikes) in less than 1,000mi/1800km. So even moderate XC riding will probably not be able to get away with several multiples of that. It only takes mild bearing play to put increased stress on the frame and shock.

I usually suggest new bearings every year, just because late season riding tends to be messier and harder on them here in New England USA. Mileage is only part of how you measure bearing life.

Usually you don’t need to replace all of them, just clean and regrease some while replacing the most worn ones — usually the main pivot and rocker arm pivot on common linkages. Get Enduro Max bearings and you may be able to go multiple years without replacements.

Re: Shoes rubbing crank arms Are you using pedal axle washers? If not add some; it might be that ~2mm extra shoe clearance you need. If you are, maybe get pedals with longer axles?

I know Shimano has them as an option (+4mm on each side if I remember correctly), I have wide hips and shoulders so typical road bars and Q-factor always felt too narrow for me — plus I have a “duck footed” toes-out stance that tends to cause heel rub. I’ve been running the extended axle Ultegra pedals on my gravel bike for years to help with all that.

Re: Carbonda FM 1003 / Flybike FM 1266 180mm "Super Enduro" Will definitely be following along with interest!

This looks like a very repairable impact since it wasn’t ridden afterwards and if that’s a real crack (rather than just a surface gouge) it doesn’t look very problematic if it can be stabilized. This is certainly a good case study in this type of surface repair because it’s a heavy duty enduro bike but also purely a superficial impact/gouge in a peripheral area and not a structural failure at a high stress zone like a tube junction or pivot point.

I do hope Wing gets back to you…with Sherpa probably taking up a significant portion of Flybike’s manufacturing capacity for the 1003 I’ve wondered about frame and parts availability. Wing said there were “a few” Large 1003s available earlier this year — September, I think — but that was before Sherpa announced the Olympus.

And weirdly enough, I don’t think they’ve posted a single picture or video of any of their ambassadors/racers actually riding one yet…

Re: Carbonda FM 1003 / Flybike FM 1266 180mm "Super Enduro" I just had another glance at the Carbonda geometry sheet for the 1003, which lists fork A2C (value “F”) as 588mm — kind of short for a 180 fork. A 170mm Fox 38 is 584mm; other common forks capable of 180mm+ like the DVO Onyx and RS Zeb are similar.

This is steering me a little bit in the direction of trying out a 170/170 setup before deciding whether to try a 180 fork. It shouldn’t alter the geometry stated in the chart by much, and might be a little bit better for all-mountain riding with lots of big climbs in between the gravity runs.

I still haven’t ordered a 1003 yet, but I’m slowly putting the pieces of the build together and deciding what fork will replace the Fox 38 on my 1002 — thinking I might try 160mm on there for a while to differentiate it a bit from the 1003.

I have to get a couple of wheels rebuilt with different rims and decide on a shock (leaning towards coil: DHX2, DHX or Bomber CR) but most of the rest is locked in.

Re: Shoes rubbing crank arms I have wide 46-ish feet (probably a 45.5 Wide would be my true size) and a duck footed stance, so heel rub has definitely been an issue for me with certain bikes esp. Boost MTBs with beefy enduro chainstays.

On my gravel bike I have tons of heel clearance with basic Shimano road shoes, but again that’s helped a lot by running the +4mm axle Ultegra pedals. I’ve been thinking lately that I don’t need the longer axles and they’re probably making my pedal stroke less efficient.

Whenever I get around to doing my next gravel build, probably a Carbonda frame, my plan is to make regular length pedals work. I don’t ride drop bars enough right now to bother buying a new set of pedals for the current one but it’s definitely something I think about often.

Re: Frame Advice You want 8x30mm (approximate; some tiny fraction of a mm over or under is usually compatible) Fox DU polymer bushings, if memory serves.

(Updated, original misquoted the size. I was probably thinking of the 1003’s yoke mount, since that’s my current project.)

Re: Carbonda ACR Headset Fix I was able to find the FSA No.55R from BikeInn recently, FWIW.

Re: Frame Advice
Great advice mate really appreciate it. Would you say 170mm cranks? Hope your 1003 build is coming on well for you!

I’ve always just run 175s because I have a long stride and slightly long legs for being 6’ tall…one of the things I really like about the 1002 with 2.6 tires compared with my previous bikes is that the BB isn’t crazy low so pedal strikes aren’t quite so excessive that I’ve felt the need to get shorter cranks.

Could be a different story with 2.3-2.4.

I haven’t put the money together yet to order the actual 1003 frame, that probably won’t happen for a few more weeks. I learned with last winter’s 1002 build that rushing to get it started around New Year’s left me with a lot of time just staring at it longingly all spring…we have a nasty, lingering mud season here in Maine.

But hopefully that’s imminent once I sell a few of the many parts I’ve been hanging on to, and my 2020 GT Force Pro frame which should pretty easily pay for the 1003 frame all by itself.

Re: Gravel Bars (Carbon vs Alloy) (Flared vs Regular) Low angle flare, low drop, super wide (46-48cm) aluminum. Short stem. Find the exact bar geometry you like and *then* once you’re completely sure it’s dialed consider getting carbon if it’s available in that geometry. But this combination can be tough to find in carbon.
