Re: ISO (San Jose, CA) mechanics knowhow working on chinese frame/components/parts?
Greetings... this is probably a long shot. I'm located in San Jose, California. LBS here does not feel comfortable working on any direct chinese frame/components/gears. Looking for local mechanics that's ok with working on buildup/maintain chinese gears? Thanks.

You should start watching Youtube. The investment of knowledge and tools will be much cheaper than what a bike shop would charge in the long run.

Re: GR029 thru axle warning.
I guess the GR029 is considered more of a CX than a gravel frame so I'm posting this warning here.

You may purchase a GR029 from a seller than includes axles, but if you don't, you need the specific axles, particularly the front, that's made for this frame.

Seraph is clear that the price on their website doesn't include axles. That's fine. They're not clear that there's no chance that any other axle that you already have or might buy, will fit that front fork. That's not fine. I'm out weeks waiting for a second order for the axles because I didn't know that I had to have the axles they sell for this frame.

Come on Seraph, be clear...better still, just include them and raise the price $34. Better STILL, lose the proprietary bolt-on front axle and put a threaded insert into the fork.

If I knew then what I know now, I'd have ordered the axles...or some other frame, more likely.

Don't make the mistake I did and order a GR029 without buying the axles.

I don't get the logic of some sellers. Just include the f**king thru axles and raise the price. It's just more hassle for the buyer.

Re: Best and worst overall quality/value components/tools/gear from AliExpress?
Does anyone have good experience with Evosid/Goldix/Zeroing GXP 2x chain rings? I am on my second (Goldix this time) after the first one Evosid came warped from factory. The large chainring was not true. Returned it and got Goldix and this one has even more warp to it :( basically there is no position on front derailleur where it doesn't rub. I can make it work on large chainring + smallest 3 cogs on cassette but pretty much any other combo results in chain rub where the ring warps. I am guessing even the small ring is out of true but not very noticeable. Back it goes and I have returned to Ultegra 6800 cranks/rings. I guess I need to pony up and get the Pass Quest rings - those have been great on my other bike.

Here are the rings in question -

Stay away from these I guess.

Most if not all the direct mount 2x chainrings from AliExpress suck. They tend to need spacers and they wear fast.  The only good ones that I've tried are the Senicx 2x chainrings. No spacers needed, they seem better aligned (less flimsy alloy) and I haven't noticed significant wear compared to Shimano chainrings. The only issue is that the chain drop pin is a bit long if using non-Senicx cranks. Though it's easily removable by unscrewing it. I now use 2x Senicx chainrings on all my bikes paired with carbon cranks. I also like that they do a 46:30t chainring for 2x gravel. Pass Quest chainrings are excellent as well, but they don't do direct mount for 2x.

This shop has the best prices I found for Senicx chainrings and I think it's another store front for Sensah: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805631117902.html

Re: shipping times from aliexpress So far my Pick 3 & Save and Choice deliveries have been arriving the fastest with private courier straight from the AliEx warehouse with 4-7 day deliveries. In fact it's the same guy dropping my stuff off! My last non-Choice purchase took 15 days to arrive and that went through USPS. For non-critical components, the price savings and speed of shipping have definitely been worth it.

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc! Sub 150g for the 11-28t and sub 163g for the 11-32t 11 speed road cassettes. Alloy big cogs though, so probably best for race applications or if you don't do much climbing.

Re: WheelTop EDS TX Full Wireless Groupset (Chinese SRAM) I actually like LTwoo's battery replaceable solution and user selection for 10/11/12 speed cassettes. If it wasn't for the issues with dead derailleurs, I probably would have bought the groupset already. I'll see what 2024 has to offer.

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc!
I know tracevelo recommended against aliexpress cleats as they are not fiberglass reinforced and don't last long, but does anyone have a positive experience with some? My cleats probably should have been replaced 2 years ago but I'm still too cheap to buy the real look ones

I just bought a bunch of Look Keo cleats off Pick 3 & Save for $1.99 USD a pair. Cleats are high wear items, just have a bunch of spares in reserve!

Re: Patty's Long Rant and Guide To Affordable Frames Is there anyone else on here who just rides for fitness? I actually don't follow bike brands, components, etc. as long as it's functional and hits a target price point. I just try to make sure my bike fit is good, mechanics are pristine and weight+aero positioning is optimized. I'd rather focus on nutrition, rest recovery, cardio and strength training. Plus I guess I'm more down the rabbit hole than most, since I can take advantage of questionable weight limited components and smaller/stiffer bike frames. I somewhat enjoy trying obscure and unknown bike frames/parts!

Re: Best and worst overall quality/value components/tools/gear from AliExpress?
I’ll likely go down that route as well, Senicx paired with the Riro carbon cranks. HOWEVER, I’m a bit hesitant regarding the choice of the old 3 bolt system regarding availability of chainring replacement.
So far all I could find was senicx offering 30-46T chainrings in a 3 bolt spec. What happens if Senicx decommissions it I’m wondering… then you’re left with 1 by chainrings I guess? Or potentially using an adapter to a 4 arm chainring? The latter I only speculate, don’t have any experience.

Regarding long term availability, during AliEx sales I've purchased spare Senicx chainrings. I haven't seen any indication of direct mount chainrings being phased out, since it seems to be the most plentiful crankset option on AliExpress. Also my bias towards Senicx chainrings is mostly due to having the same alignment as Shimano cranksets. Little to no FD adjustments are needed.

Also there's another option now for 46-30t chainrings and even 48-32t. Though I haven't tried this particular version yet, so I can't vouch for quality:

Also it looks you can adapt 5 bolt 46-32t chainrings as well (using a direct mount to 5 bolt adapter):
