Re: Are AliEx/open mold carbon bikes common in your area?
HA!  My main riding buddy has the top of the line $7k Look 765RS gravel bike.   He's an automotive mechanic by trade but can't figure out how to properly take care of his chain, despite my offers to do it/show him how.  We will be on a ride and I'll say something to the affect of "Do you wear your ear bud in the right ear because because your chain sounds like a couple of Transformers trying to screw or is it just a coincidence?"

The other day I was riding with my buddy who's an engineer by trade and was rolling on a Giant TCR Advanced. We noticed his cassette was rattling. It's not the most expensive bike, but it's still north of $4K USD and I was rolling on my "spare parts" 1x carbon endurance frame with $50 Sensah shifters and a $50 Goldix crankset. I asked him if he had tightened it properly, and he's like yeah I tightened it (he had a new wheelset). When we got back to my house to check on his cassette, he must have hand screwed the lock ring because that sucker just slid off the freehub!

On my occasional group rides there's always a few bikes that need serious tuning, chains that need to be wiped down and the easily preventable mechanical issues. I think this is why I like AliEx and open mold frames, it truly forces you to learn your bike, which I think makes you a better cyclist in the long run.

Ornan Bike gravel frame build Hi y'all,

I'm working on a new gravel build at the moment and starting this thread to share some info on the frame and talk some shop ;D

  • The frame is frame from Ornan Bike: https://www.ornanbike.com/best-chinese-carbon-gravel-bike-frames-with-flat-mount-type_p106.html
It was the model R730-D when I ordered, they seem to have changed the model number since. This frame is also carried by Top Fire and a couple of others. I ordered mine in size 480 without a fork. 429 USD without fork, 605 total.
I've since found this same mold out in the wild sold as the Franco Grimes, any frame spotters seen this one under other names/brands?
  • Whisky No.9 CX Fork: I originally planned to use a replica from Ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/303880803441. This replica is pretty awesome, I used it on my old Poseidon X. It took forever to arrive, so it's now for sale if anyone is interested  ;D I will say the forks look identical except for the finish...even the steerer tubes look identical and the weight is the same. I ended up buying a real Whisky fork locally and will move forward with that one as I've already painted it.
  • ZNIINO 90mm carbon stem from Aliexpress. Looks nice, cheap and easy to paint. Finishing was a little rough around the edges, but nothing a little sandpaper couldn't fix, I was painting it anyway. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256801745113305.html?
  • I'm gonna give this Elita One saddle a shot (model 3143): https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832622302239.html?
  • Zipp Service Course XPLR 70 handlebars. My gf has the road version on her bike and I always thought they were super comfortable and they're pretty cheap, so I got the gravel version in 42cm for this build.
  • XPLR groupset: Pieced it together used from various online sources. Rival XPLR derailleur, 40t power meter crankset, 10-44 cassette, and Force chain.
  • For shifting and braking I'll be using: AXS wireless blips, TRP RRL brake levers, and Klamper copies. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804206370295.html? I used these brakes for maybe 20 miles on my old Poseidon before we swapped the groupset to GRX 810 and sold the bike to my cousin. We'll see how these ride and I'll post some updates.
  • Time Atac XC pedals
  • Panaracer Gravelking SK tires in 700x38 for now. I have an old set of these in 700x32 tucked away somewhere as well that I may use for faster rides, but I may just get some slicker tires as well.
  • Still working on a wheelset, I'll probably use an alloy DT Swiss set for a few weeks until I sort out some carbon wheels.

I'm already working on the paint job! I saw someone painting with smoke on motorcycle parts using a kerosene torch and thought it would look cool on a gravel frame. Here's what I have so far!
I'm about 60% done with paint. I've applied the slightly off white base coat and smoke effect, and then quickly sealed with a 2K clear coat as the smoke effect is quite dainty and will smudge and come off quite easily. The stem has been painted in a metallic bronze and the plan is to cover the white, uncovered part of the frame in this same bronze color, fading into the smoke. Does that even make sense?  ;D ;D I'll also be painting a couple small logos on the frame and repainting the Whisky logo on the lower right fork leg. Tbh I'm kinda liking the frame as is. I may just paint on the logos and forget about the fade, just leave it as is...what do y'all think? Shitty Paint sketch for reference  ;D ;D

Re: Groupset News The official press conference wrapped up yesterday and media first impressions are trickling in

Weights
Left & right levers
L-TWOO quoted weight: 225g (each)
Biketo measured weight: 445.1g
雪大爷单车 measured weight: 223.1g (left), 222g (right)

FD
L-TWOO quoted weight: 150g
Biketo measured weight: 139.3g
雪大爷单车 measured weight: 139.1g

RD
L-TWOO quoted weight: 270g
Biketo measured weight: 275.6g
雪大爷单车 measured weight: 275.7g

Seatpost battery & cables
L-TWOO quoted weight: 62g (battery only)
Biketo measured weight: 85.1g
雪大爷单车 measured weight: 85.2g

Pricing
Big surprise is that there is a 3500RMB eR9 Alloy to sit below the 4500RMB eRX Carbon. Disregard their mechanical naming convention because both are 12s.

It's unclear how much heavier eR9 will be.

Testimonials
I'll briefly summarise this vlog from a LBS proprietor who was invited to the launch:
  • He mentions that the derailleurs are not the only determinant of shifting quality. The supplied chainring, chain and cassette on the Java test bikes are not the best so it's hard to make an apples to apples comparison with the established brands
  • FD sucks. He says that it feels like 'last gen SRAM' (not sure if he's referring to RED eTap A1 11s or Force AXS D1 here) where shifting under load especially uphill is difficult
  • RD is fine and shifts like 'last gen Shimano' (R8070?) but has chain slap issues (not enough tension?)
  • Lever buttons feel like a mouse click and aren't nearly tactile enough. Very mushy like SRAM pre-Rival/Force AXS D2.
  • Due to how the inner shift button is half embedded into the leading edge of the brake lever, riding over bumps and uneven surfaces results in frequent accidental shifts
  • You can see Joe Whittingham from China Cycling at 2:55 so you can look forward to his first impressions video
  • He shifts up and down the entire cassette range at 3:45 and 4:05
  • He says that the braking feels improved from the mechanical RX hydraulic he tried before

Function
I was mistaken by the shifting logic. As opposed to being SRAM style with a single button on either side, it's actually Shimano style with 2 buttons on each lever but laid out the other way around. Shifting layouts and derailleur adjustments are configurable in-app.
Left lever: Inner textured button shifts to big ring, outer smooth button shifts to small ring
Right lever: Inner textured button shifts to a smaller cog, outer smooth button shifts to a larger cog

Direct mount hanger is a option for the rd. I can't figure out where a power cable goes for either derailleur. How do you charge the battery(s) what kind of battery.
We actually don't know if it's DM hanger capable until someone tries installing it. The callipers for example appeared to be PM at first but they're actually their own proprietary thing with different dimensions to work around patents.

The levers are semi-wireless and powered by CR2032 batteries while the FD and RD are powered by an 800mAh seatpost battery (for reference, BT-DN300 is 500mAh, EPS V3 is 720mAh and K-Force WE is 1100mAh). Charging is handled by a magnetic connector at the backside of the RD facing NDS.

Does that mean this hanger will be used for both gravel & road with a fairly big cassette clearance?
RD max capacity is still rated at 32T as opposed to the industry standard 34T. I'm sure that while an 11-34T cassette could fit, a 36T like CS-HG710-12 certainly wouldn't.

Personal thoughts
Even though they are the best 'put together' of the 3 upstart groupset manufacturers, it is still painfully obvious that this is a small operation prone to amateur mistakes. For example, L-TWOO's press conference presentation deck and website marketing material for this launch was riddled with typos and inaccuracies. They incorrectly spelled the word for brifter, the battery capacity was wrongly labelled at 850mAh and the eR9 was originally listed as 11s leading some to believe that 12s function would be software locked for eRX only.

And if you thought that getting your hands on a groupset abroad is difficult, local distribution isn't much better. For instance, they decided to setup a new WeChat account to handle all eRX direct pre-sales (unbelievably inane imo) which would quickly be disabled for overactivity because they used a personal account as opposed to an enterprise account. Lastly, they decided to respond to people who felt that the 4500RMB pricetag was too steep by joking that it was a more of a 'you' problem (1:55) [EDIT: now cut from the video...I guess they aren't that tone deaf] so don't expect price cuts any time soon. However, Chinese Shimano resellers have already responded by slashing the price of R7170 'small kits' so we may well see a price war unfold in the future.

Misc
L-TWOO has also started supplying Hydraulic R7 Alloy 10s to OEMs

Re: Clipless shoes
I recently stumbled onto the website www.sportpursuit.com  You have to sign up to view their site/prices. (its free) They sell closeouts on cycling and other outdoor gear.  Some crazy deals on there but size selection can be limited at times.

They have sometimes good deals, the return are paying but works well and they have a very good support in case of troubles.
It is a business model where they collect our money, and then buy the items from a bankrupt company or some end of stocks.

In most cases, you can always find items at the same price or even lower when looking for the same products on Google.

They have as well their own brands too, that are kind of so-so( Rivelo, RULE#XIV, Isoobaa, Fjern,...), on which they make you feel you get a big discount while they are the only one selling them.
They build a mostly empty web site for each brand, with nice looking people that look cool in nature. To give them some credential.

I may look negative, but not, I bought a lot of things from them knowing the above.
Recently Sportful jerseys at Aliexpress like prices, and some Rapha garments.

privatesportshop.com has the same business model, and they could be recently connected as they start to sell the same stuff.

Re: Ican S3 XC Frame I just built up my s3 over the winter.  It's my first mtb so I don't have much to compare it to.  I was just looking for a budget bike I could race in some local xc events.  Tried keeping it somewhat light for a few races, but budget limited me on some things.

Specs:
Fork: Sid ultimate 120
Rear shock: Dps performance 165x45
Crank:. Stages LR XTR 36t
Shift: XTR shift/xt rear derailleur
Cassette: slx 10-45
Brakes: xt 8000
Bars: race face next 700mm
Wheels: hunt race xc wide
Tire:. Specialized ground control/FasTrack 29x2.35
Pedal: xtr

Right now I'm at right around 25lbs.  I'm thinking of swapping to some iKon/rekon 2.20, so hopefully that will lighten things up.  Have a transfer sl dropper on the way, but honestly not sure I'll need it.

Re: 3D Printed Saddles got this Ryet Aircode 3D for 1wk, it's too soon to say anything but initial impressions are good. The brand got me wishing to risk it, because other 3d saddles offering in Aliexpress don't look that trustworthy, this at least got 1yr warranty (at least it says it does...)

I was using a Mixed 5D for bit over 1yr and was really good for a long time, until it wasn't anymore (last 2 months or so), think the padding lost resistance overtime

Re: Spider mounted power meter advice I pulled the trigger on the Magene P505 for my Sram 3 bolt crank. I got a very good price and another small discount from Magene. I got a set of Favero Assioma pedals that I can compare the device with. I’ll let you know how it performs.
Shane Millers favourable review is what convinced me in the end.
