Re: New Wheel Day - Elite Wheels BWT Disc
Ok thank you.

More general question - having previously lived in TO I couldn't imagine commuting via bike with the streetcars and poor drivers. You are brave!

Haha Thanks!  You'd be surprised how many bike lanes have popped up in Toronto over the last few years.
That being said, I commute around Wilson Rd near Downsview, and if I need to do a long ride, I go out to Pickering/Durham

VB-R-168 Build- A sceptic's experience Hello all.

I am located in USA so all of the links below may not work for you. This is just an overview of my experience and what I found while building the new bike. I purchased a VB-R-168 frame, integrated bars, VB-60 carbon wheels, and the rest of the components needed to make it a rolling machine :D. Before I start, I wanted to say I was very sceptical of this purchase and worried that it would not turn out as good as it did. Chris from VB is very helpful and responsive. I have read of negative experiences relating to VB, but mine was thankfully a pleasant one.

Parts ordered
- VB-R-168 frame (size 58- matte black)- Velobuild

The good-
The frame, bars, and forks came within two weeks (to USA). The wheels took longer because I requested 350 straight pull hubs. Everything went together nicely (I definitely recommend using carbon paste and torque wrench). Getting the cables through the frame and bars was reasonably difficult, but not too bad. The bike is all together and I have a few rides under my belt. Great bike, stiff, fast. Definitely a great bike for the price. I hate when my bikes are noisy from cable rattle, etc... so I made sure I took all necessary precautions when building this one. The end result is pretty great considering the price point.

The not so great-
The seat post has slipped on me (it may not do this if you are smaller. I am 220 lbs-100 kg). I found adding more carbon paste and upping the torque setting slightly definitely helps. The wheels took a bit longer due to covid and my customizations which isn't the end of the world. The aero bars may be too aero for some. I purchased the VB separate stem and bar combo to replace the integrated bars- that hasn't arrived yet. I left the steerer tube slightly long to add spacers later on.

I have added some pictures of the bike fully built. Feel free to ask any questions if you have.

Thanks for reading/viewing.

Re: Elite Wheels - Hubs Question & Tubeless vs Clincher Depends on what you are using them for. If you are only riding road, stay away from tubeless all together.
DT swiss 350 are my favorite hubs and they are a know brand where as the others are generic. Probably perfectly good hubs but if we ever decide to sell those wheels the DT swiss part will be the only thing that gets you any money back.

Re: New Wheel Day - Elite Wheels BWT Disc
I've ordered a set of ent disc, hope my hubs will be loud as yours, I would love that

I am afraid the ENTs will be pretty quiet.
I rode my old commuter the other day, which has silent Shimano hubs and I have come to realize:
When I am casually cycling to run some errands, I prefer silent
When I am doing a training session, or some sort of ride where I put in effort, I actually enjoy the noise:
  • It is a convenient way to warn those ahead of you that you are approaching from behind
  • It is a convenient way to remind you that you are being lazy and coasting  :D

Pulled the trigger on the Elite Wheel DRIVE wheelset After much humming and hawing, I decided to pulled the trigger on their 2022 Elite DRIVE Wheelset.

You can find it on their AliExpress storefront, but oddly it is not yet advertised on their official B2C website.
Even on the AliExpress site, its a bit buried: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003763694064.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_home.0.0.267ed0edTPNtBU
The glossy marble-like design won't be for everyone, but I dig it.

I got 5 sets, which got me some discount but not a ton - since the shipment is small, I can't have them sent by freight.  They are being sent by EMS, in which case I do have a fighting chance at of at least being spared taxes and duties
And, on the plus side, I will receive them faster - probably just before the Spring riding season begins (here in Toronto, good riding doesn't really start until at least all the salt and gravel from winter is swept away...)

Once I get my hands on them, I'll let you all know how they fare!

Re: Pulled the trigger on the Elite Wheel DRIVE wheelset
Besides weight,

What is the advantage of these wheels over their entry level wheels?

So, besides the 425g weight savings, here are the "hard" items you are paying extra for:
- Ceramic bearings (2RS dual-seal bearings. Worth mentioning as most Chinese ceramic bearings are those awful single seal ones)
- Comes with carbon aero spokes
- More advanced carbon lay-up (resulting in increased rigidity and lateral stiffness, and said reduced weight)

As with the weight loss, these all add up to a handful of marginal gains - better power transmission, reduced rolling resistance, increased climbing performance and improved aero properties, increased stiffness and better vibration absorption.   Also, they look cool.

If you are a moderately healthy cyclist, will you feel these marginal gains?  Probably.  Will you think you will feel the gains? Absolutely.

When you look at all the folks here who chop seat posts, swap out hardware to titanium, you can see how far some people will go to shave a few grams.
Add to that some non-weight related performance gains for half the price of the closest equivalent (like the Farsports S EVO), and you have a winner!

Re: Pulled the trigger on the Elite Wheel DRIVE wheelset They are on their way to Canada!

Whats more, Mr. Trace Velo will be reviewing these in an upcoming video.   While I'm confident he'll like them, you never know until you know.

Re: SUNRIMOON Helmets
Are you planning on getting a sample price based on potentially placing a larger size order?

I just said “F*** it” and put in a quote for 20. Mixed colours and sizes.
I am confident enough that they are an OEM manufacturer looking to create their own brand.
They admitted as such, and the helmet looks suspiciously similar to the HJC Furion 2.0.
Of course, most of these factories are an OEM for someone, so that’s no surprise.

No concerns on them meeting safety thresholds. Although, with 20 I may consider sending in one for independent testing. I’ll have to weigh the costs.

Worse comes to worse, I sell them at cost.
