Re: Wheeltop GeX or Ltwoo eGR? Oh, I forgot one. The LTWOO system does NOT communicate battery status correctly to a Garmin head unit. I get a 'critically low' alert every ride even when the battery is fine and reports fine in the app. Sadly to disable that alert, I'd have to disconnect them and I don't want that.

I haven't fully vetted the Wheeltop connection. Gear position indicator seems to work correctly but I'm not sure if the GarminIQ app is needed to enable that or not. Haven't seen an low battery alert yet.

Re: Wheeltop EDS GeX
In the name of science: I actually did it: I ordered the groupset from taobao to the warehouse of my shipping agent. So far i paid 2599 yuan + 3% international card fee so 2677 yuan which equals around 340€. There's usually also a 1,8% fee from my credit card to convert the yuan to euro. So the total price should come out to 2725 yuan which is 345€.

I will let you know about the shipping price from my shipping agent to germany. I'm pretty optimistic that it will come out to less than 400€ including import taxes etc.

For comparison: From wheeltop website it's 599€ and from aliexpress it's at least 470€ without any taxes paid, so at least 500€ probably more.

If everything goes right this is a good deal. If it doesn't work out like i imagine it might have been a really stupid idea. Wish me luck.

The groupset is packed and shipped out now. The whole shipping, packaging etc. comes out to 47€. In addition to the 345€ i've paid so far i am at 392€ for the whole groupset. I could have optimized a little further by not shipping the whole packaging etc. but i didn't want the groupset to get damaged in transit.

Re: Gravel build - your evergreen vfm parts? Gravel or not, there are some parts that are on most of my bikes (depending on the compatibility)
1. Uno stem
2. Elita One seatpost
3. Lightweight cassettes from Wuzei, Sunshine etc (not the super light colorful ones)
4. Cooma brake pads
5. Heppe gold shift cables
6. Fish bone cable housing

Apart from these, Zniino handlebars which I have on 3 bikes and Elitewheels wheelsets. All my bikes are also running KMC chains from AliExpress.

Re: Gravel build - your evergreen vfm parts? Stuff I use and hasn't broken after about 5.000km:
  • ZTTO bottom bracket (steel bearings)
  • PassQuest chainrings
  • Ryet 3d print carbon saddle
  • Mixed 7D ultra light carbon saddle
  • IIIPRO disc brake rotors
  • Magene Base power meter
  • Goldix 12s ultralight all steel cassette 11-34
  • Raceworks pedals
  • Ridenow TPU tubes
  • Cycplus speed and cadence sensor
  • colorful cheap non slip handlebar tape (no "brand"; rockbros was shit and lost color quickly)
  • silicone crank arm protector - actually one side has a cut but crank beneath is fine, so I guess protector is protecting

Re: Wheeltop EDS GeX I want to contribute with my impressions from the first couple of rides:

- Installating the GeX was absolutely no problem. As many others, I didn't need to bleed the brakes after shorting cables. With dropbar-integrated cables, it's difficult to fit the cable into the Brifters. I recommend to completely unscrew the Brifters from the (tightended) clamps for fitting the cables, makes life much easier...

- Adjusting the deraillieur was absolutely no problem with the app. Just make sure to first set the limit screw for the smallest cog, and start the adjustment in this cog moving your way up to the largest cog.

- Once set up, shifting performance is very good. The smaller button on the right brifter is at first a bit difficult to "find". But as there's also a button on the left, you don't actually need it.

- I'm running it 13-speed with a Ekar 9-42 cassette. So (quite obvious), the derailleur works well with a 9 T cog (Wheeltop website states 10-11 T for smallest cog). I'm using a 12-speed flattop schain, so I can't say anything regarding compatibilty with Ekar chains. However, I wouldn't expect any problems.

Overall, I'm super happy with it!

Re: Gravel build - which parts you usually DON'T get from China for good reason? in my gravel build the only parts not from china are Rotors (shimano) and tyres.

Re: Gravel build - which parts you usually DON'T get from China for good reason? Tires. They aren't actually much cheaper (probably due to higher shipping costs for larger/heavier items) and quality is questionable. For an item that heavily impacts your ride I'm not willing to sacrifice quality for a 20€ saving.

Re: Gravel build - which parts you usually DON'T get from China for good reason? Chain. Why ride fakes or dubious quality for such an integral part? Genuine chains are not too expensive.

Re: Gravel build - which parts you usually DON'T get from China for good reason? +1 on tyres, but also because bicycle rolling resistance hasnt started testing chinese ones. Someone here said good things about the conti GP5000 chinese equivalent, i forgot the name. If it were cheaper, and tested just as well, i'd give it a go.

YBN makes very good chains, but it's the only brand i'd get from Asia (tracevelo has tested a few horrid chinese chains).

I use chinese rotors.

The only thing not chinese on my bikes is the tyres. And we use branded bike computers, mostly garmin, some wahoo. I got a basic bike computer from china for a friend last year, he barely rode, but he isn't too happy with it.

On handlebars, i've used and bought so many for so long, i dont really think about it anymore. If you dont look for the lightest part, or the most improbable / niche design, and if you buy from someone reputable, i dont think you risk too much.

Re: Gravel build - which parts you usually DON'T get from China for good reason? I've tried a few Chinese chains, and they've been so-so in performance. Now I only use KMC and SRAM chains right now.  They handle third party cassettes better and can safely handle the degrease and immersive wax process. I don't like Shimano chains for immersive wax and they seem more prone to rust once degreased. I buy my tires locally because it's cheaper. Other than that most Chineseparts can be used reliably and in some cases are even superior in performance.
