Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Velo Build R-099 Build

Great, thanks!  Snacks, after having had the bike for a year can you sum up your thoughts/review?  Pros/cons?

Cheers

Tim

No problem! Overall, I’m very happy with the bike. It does what I need it to and I feel like I’m going a ton faster than I was on my previous bike. Haven’t really had any issues with the frame. If I had to nitpick id purchase another headset , expander plug and handlebar. Expander plug doesn’t hold the greatest but works well enough to establish preload on the bearings. The headset provided works but isn’t the greatest , I’ve already replaced mine. The handlebar does flex a bit but it fits me very well and the flex hasn’t been an issue. Cable routing through the handlebar is actually pretty terrible. You need a internal routine kit like the park tool one. Some of the cheaper kits didn’t work for me. I think somewhere in this thread I have a link to a cheaper alternative from eBay that I’ve been using. So I think if I had the choice to forgo the handlebar and purchase mine own, I would. I was toying with the FSA Acr stem and some random aliexoress carbon bars that had internal cable routing but decided to stick with what I had since it fit so well. I also purchased an extra seat post since i think it’s proprietary and didn’t want to ever have an issue with that. Im not sure what else I can say about the frame as a the rest of my experience will differ from yours based on component, wheel, tire ..etc selection. But I can say given the opportunity to re-do my purchase, id purchase this frame again in a heatbeat.

wow 45c/650b on a 099? I would not have expected that to work. Sounds fun!

Yea it definitely was fun! But I didn’t want all the rocks and such chipping away and ruining the finish on my 099 so I got a dedicated gravel bike, velobuild gf01. I gave that a custom paint job with 2k clear to protect it and it’s been awesome. That’s running on 700c 45 tires . Thinking about it I should probably start a thread on it too

Hey all, I'm considering the 099 but currently have a gravel bike.  40c tires are likely all that is needed for the 'worst' gravel around here.  Does anybody think 650b with 40c will fit this frame?  Anybody tried?

yea i tried out my buddies 650b wheels with 45c tires on my frame once and they fit just fine

Does anyone know what is the thread size on the rear bottom bolt of the triangle.. When I unscrewed and tried rescrewing it back, it is getting stuck..
I igured out it is a m12, but not sure if it is 1.75 / 1.5 or 1.25.. trying to use a thread tap to see if I can get the screw back on..

Not off the top of my head. I’d have to remove the bolt and measure it. Since you already have it out just measure it. There a quite a few YouTube videos that will show you how

"However, due to the pandemic, we have not yet been able to visit the production on-site - this is yet to happen."

I'm sure the factory told sciu what they wanted to hear and they in turn painted a nice rosey picture for pinkbike  ;D

I quite like the changes to the front triangle on this one and the threaded bb. The geo on this is not exactly like the hightower like they stated the AM831 is , but it is pretty damn close.

To fix the Damper the shockends are 8*22mm, rear & 8*22mm front!! Not 30 & 22 like the sellers told in description.

Not the first time they've provided incorrect specs like this. they said the same for the am831 and it was backwards. Not sure why they do this, it's not hard to measure

You'll either get a frame or your money but neither one will come quickly from China.  Good luck and don't expect a different experience from any other reseller.

I guess you can't be let down if you expect the worse but I've definitely had much better experiences with other resellers as I'm sure a majority have on this site. This is just another example of Eddys deceitful tactics .

That's incredible.  I'm pushing 60 and have been ordering from china for nearly 20 years.  Giving questionable characters a pass is how we got to this place.  Never had a fraud experience with any Frame dealer.  Yes some were late and not exactly as advertised.  Eddy and his company define a new low and apparently its OK because eventually they will ship a crappy product and maybe you will get your money back.

I completely agree with you. It's definitely not ok and they should be held accountable.  At the very least this is getting the word out so others don't go through the same . Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, I hope you are able to get this resolved through PayPal. I wouldnt wait for Eddy to do anything about it. He's stopped responding to me altogether when I have a valid warranty claim.

Those look nice! I ordered a pair of the oil slick dt swiss clones but I'm thinking I should just sell those and buy the full wheelset if theyre that cheap. I'm assuming that price is without shipping since it's so low

The answer will change based on who you ask.
It might be easier to find some frames you like then check the site for threads on those frames and read user feedback to make a decision. You can also just look through the forum and get a general idea what companies are purchased from the most then read reviews in the specific threads. There is also a vendor feedback section of the forum to check out as well. Also, take recommendations with a grain if salt as YMMV.

Personally I've had a great experience with light carbon and
velobuild. It seems like people here also like carbonda quite a bit but i have no experience with them to give you a definite answer. I can also tell you ive had a terrible experience with tantan/winow/seraph( all the same company) and heideli/tidace.

Let me put it in a way that made it easier for me to follow, hope it helps for others -
The original frame with all the issues we'll call AM831 v1.0 (triangle v1.0).
The frame shipping soon with the upgraded triangle will be AM831 v2.0 (triangle v2.0).
Did they actually fix the link but adding 2mm of threads?  I bought a manually tap to do just that and I no longer need a washer.  Anyway, I'll call that v1.5.
Are people getting a v1.5 frame after Haideli were made aware of the issue?  Do frames ordered after Eddy told them that is was fixed have the same issues as the 1.0 owners?
I would like to know, it would change my opinion from misunderstanding of what "fix" means to somewhere between emu26's and your stance.  I'm giving Haideli the benefit of the doubt based on my daily interactions with nonnative English speakers.

The 1.0 connection style isn't the best design but it works.  "Could be better" to flawed is a big leap as it isn't a catastrophic failure.  Yes, JJJ's mod will make it better like any after market upgrade should.

That actually helped quite a bit. I would hope at the very least they provided the v1.5 after they were made aware but l'm just as curious as you to get a definite answer. Based on what I read I assumed it was the same v1.0 frames they were getting still but we all know what happens when you assume. So hopefully someone who recently got their frame can chime in.

And I hear ya giving them the benefit of the doubt, I did the same early on for the same reasons. I grew up in a mostly non English speaking household so I completely understand how things get lost or misconstrued in translation. However, after reading a few unhappy replies and based on my interaction with him it seems to me like he knew what he was saying.

And Samsung continued to sell the exploding phones.  It was a feature, not a bug :)
I laughed a little too hard at this. The people in my office are now on to the fact that I may not be working as much as I seem to be.

Got a fox factory 36 with the grip2 damper for Christmas but it kinda seems like a waste to put it on this frame. I also noticed with a +3mm crown race the fox 36 still hits the downtube when the durolux didn't.

Although it's pretty hard not to play with a new toy ;D so I'll probably throw it on , put some frame protection over the rub area and try to ride it again on a more mild trail later today

I understand, I just disagree and think you're overreacting.  I don't know of any open mold resellers that ask how high when a handful of customers asks them to jump.  If you do let us know, they'll get a lot more business.

Enjoy your non-Haideli ride ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I may actually have been the one over reacting a bit and that's probably due to my unique issue (the frame rub) that Eddy refuses to acknowledge or help with. But going back over the thread , I still stand by what I said.

I don't think any business in the world would ask how high. Maybe a trampoline park? ;D But I can tell you light carbons' and velobuilds after sale support is night and day better than what I have received with heideli. I got any documentation, torque specs,  new bearings or pretty much whatever I needed straight away from Carol at light carbon. I've had an even better experience with Chris from velobuild. If there was ever a problem , I'd show proof with a couple pictures and a replacement or fix was sent ASAP. Not once did I have to argue with them, wait days upon days for a reply or get ignored like with heideli. This is amongst other issues I've had, the two biggest (other than the flex) were the paint quality being terrible and it's been like pulling teeth trying to get any help for this frame rub. I'm not sure how many pictures and emails I've sent but they refuse to do anything about it. Well to be honest, it's not a refusal per say, Eddy just doesn't reply to any email where I bring it up.

In response to your other post -
It's been said a more than a few times now that the design is flawed and it's clearly problematic if a lot of us are going with JJJ's bolts to fix it. Since you agree that they did know about the issue months ago, why is it ok for them to sell off the stock of a frame with a known flaw like this? You say that's how industry works. But if any other company did this wouldn't there be a fix provided at no cost or a recall as is true with auto manufacturers? I can't imagine any consumer in any industry being ok with flawed products being sold and sent out when the issue is known and acknowledged by the company producing it. That would be like samsung still selling the exploding note phones just to finish off current stock before selling ones that don't explode.

Also, I completely understand how heideli can't magically change the rear triangle while the frame is in transit. However, it seems Eddy did confirm the flex was fixed to a couple people but in actuality they got the same frame we did with the same flawed design and flex. Attached are a couple pictures of those comments. If you check the group buy A thread around the times of these comments i think you will find a couple more people saying the same thing.

Maybe I'm a bit naive when it comes to Chinese open mould frames but I don't think this was due to a language barrier or misunderstanding. Which is truely unfortunate, as i was hoping having him here would be a boon for the community.

Haideli is not to take the blame alone - several retailers are using the same "open mold" and all those retailers have the issue to deal with. I bought mine from Winow Cycles, same problem. So it's the provider of the "open mold" that should take the blame.

I'm not blaming heideli for the frame. I'm blaming them for the way they've handling the situation and for lying about the frame being fixed before it actually had been. I can only blame them since that's who I've purchased from and what I experienced.

If you want to share your experience with winow since it seems they've done the same thing, then please go ahead. I already dont trust tantan/winow/seraph because they have provided fake tracking numbers to me in the past (amongst other things) rather than being open and honest about their delays. Which I would completely understand and accept had then been forthright.

In my case, there wasn‘t a idea of Eddy selling me fast a frame and beyond him the hell. I asked him directly the triangle will be fixed or not. He told me that the producing of improved triangle will took minimum jan 17th. They stopped my deliv. till this date. Now i’m changing the frame Model and this also wasn’t a problem. How it was worth i will see in a few days hopefully. In my case i can not see any bad methods.

Yea you got lucky but if you read the thread there have been more than a couple people who did purchase their frame after he stated it was already fixed snd yet they received the same thing the rest of us did.

Otherwise, if i understand right, cybrsrce rides the frame intensive with only a Teflonshrim fixing. If you want a „no worrys frame“ maybe it’s better to order a SC Hightower frame, isn‘t it?

No, it's not necessary to go to SC and buy a $3500 frame. There are other companies that are selling "no worrys frame" straight from China. Heideli is just not one of them.
