Are previous winners allowed to enter?  I don't want everyone here to hate me :)

Shouldn't you replace that steel deck with a carbon fiber one?  Probably shave off a couple of pounds!

Great page on wheel building here- http://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html

And there are plenty of other tutorials, YouTube videos, etc., to help as well.

I built my own, thanks to a bit of luck.  Thread on that here-
http://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,206.msg1767.html#msg1767

I originally bought wheels, because I wasn't sure I could build them.  Getting free rims gave me the confidence to try it out, and it really is fairly easy if you study all the information beforehand and take your time.  It will take a long time to build your first set, but I think it's worth it.  I doubt that I saved any money compared to just buying a wheelset, but I think it is worth it to have the knowledge and experience in case I need to repair a wheel or want to build more in the future. And I got exactly what I wanted in hubs, spokes, etc.

Plus, all the ladies swoon when I tell them that I built the bike AND the wheels :)

Nice!  Almost makes me wish I'd gone with a weave for my rims.

For painting, weave and finish would only matter if you want to leave some of the frame unpainted.

I kind of like the look with sections of weave showing, but I had mine painted solid red.

Well you got your top tube, down tube, nanotube, etc.

4 nanometers?  How are you measuring that?    :)

Sorry, geek 'humor'.  I also get twitchy when people use 'ID' for the inside width on rims.

That's what I never understood.  I can see not being attached if you are doing tricks or very likely to bail as in dirt jumping, but for rock gardens, rough and fast descents, or anything else where the bike is bouncing around I greatly prefer to be attached to the bike.

It's got disc brakes and a thru axle- shouldn't it also have a 1X drivetrain?  :)

Thanks Sussed- looks like car rental is pretty reasonable, so I may go that route.  Hopefully the bike will fit.  I've driven on the wrong side a few times, so that shouldn't be a problem. :)

After The Ride / Question for UK riders- trail suggestions
« on: April 14, 2015, 12:32:22 PM »
I'll be in the UK for work next month, and will be staying over a weekend. I'll be in the northwest, near Blackpool, but could take the train anywhere.  The Lake District is close by, and looks to have plenty to keep me occupied.  Any suggested routes for a cross country epic, or can't miss trail systems?  Should I look at a different area?  Thanks for any suggestions!

Also, how easy is it to take a bike on the train?  I'll have a car service or shuttle bus back and forth from the airport (and the bike will be broken down), but I'll probably be using the bike to get to the train and for local transport wherever I go.
