3) There is play in the headset. It is minor and does not effect braking. I have ordered a longer compression cap that may fixe this. I know that previously in this forum, someone used light spacers.

Yeah, I think that's me. I didn't think the fit was terrible and the play wasn't that bad, really, but it did bug me because the whole headset/bearing/top cap/compression plug just weren't working the way they were supposed to work. Finally got it solved with new bearings, new compression ring, new compression plug, and a few spacers. Definitely needed the new compression plug and spacers, but looking back, it probably would work fine with the TanTan headset bearings and compression ring.

Really?  No complaints other than the brusque attitude and continual underestimation of shipment dates.

Sorry to hear that. But, yeah, for me, really, no complaints. Sounds like I had a much better experience, though, with shipping and follow-up. I guess I should add the disclaimer, YMMV.

Your build looks fantastic!

I had a ton of issues with my build, but I chalked most of those up to my inexperience with bike building. I'd say the biggest issues I had would be with the fork/front wheel through axle fit and head tube/headset bearing fit. For both of those, I had to throw in the towel and go to my LBS. About $5 worth of spacers and washers later, it's all good.

Thanks !

Who is your contact person and email at TanTan ?
I'm looking to build a couple of hardtails, and could start working with them.

You can try Lisa, she's who I work/worked with. She's still answering emails and filling orders for me. I have no complaints.

I tried to purchase this frame on Aliexpress back in November. After I already paid for it, the TanTan rep sent me an email saying it was out of stock and issued a refund after we had a short back and forth over other models that were available. They did say, at the time, that they would be available this month. Not sure that helps, but I'd reach out to whichever TanTan rep is currently working on Aliexpress to doublecheck availability before purchasing.

As for TanTan and spare parts, yeah, i'm not sure how many years from now you're anticipating having to get a spare part, but I purchased my TanTan frame back in November and as recently as a week ago, Lisa who I bought the frame from, is still answering emails and sending parts as requested. I had a random screw fall out which she replaced free of charge and I also purchased a spare rear deraileur hangar. I've asked about other parts they might have on hand and have had 0 issues getting answers.

I can't speak for the TT-X3 or BB386 specifically, but as far as TanTan frame quality goes, I've had 0 issues with the pressfit bottom bracket on my frame. It's a BB86 and I've recently switched out the Shimano 24mm BB86 threaded pressfit for a 29mm DUB pressfit. Alignment and tolerances are excellent, both installs were super easy, and no creaking from either.

Quality wise, I think the Tantan TT X21 frame I purchased for just north of 500 USD is pretty good. Im going to just sau its identical to the VB r099. But, it does have it's issues that showed up during the build. Nothing a first time bike  builder like myself couldnt eventually handle, but I can't imagine running into the same problems with a frame from a major name brand. I could be wrong, but I don't know that $500 more is going to mean you won't have the same issues.

I guess my question would be, what are you hoping to get for $500 more? I wanted a carbon framed aero road bike I could build myself, something faster and snappier than the aluminum framed endurance bike Id been riding, and well within my modest budget. Mission accomplished.

Hi
Did anyone here had problems with a play in the headset?

1) Check your steerer tube length. You may not have left enough space to compress the headset.
2) Check your compression ring to make sure it's seated properly.
3) Check your compression plug to see if it's slipping.
4) If you're locking up your steering but still getting play in your headset, check to see if you have too much space between your top cover and compression ring.

For 1, I just used a spacer above the stem. For 2, the compression ring was seating fine most of the time, but it was frustrating enough that I got a new headset with a different compression ring. For 3, I had to use a different compression plug.

When all those were taken care of, I started locking up the steering trying to tighten the headset, so it was progress at least. My LBS sold me some spacers that sit above the compression ring. That finally did the trick.

ahh yea my bad, i just realized that the one i saw was too narrow. possibly thats for an MTB frame.

No worries, sorting through all the standards, then who makes which standard in which flavor is dizzying.

I did complete the install of both the new Wheels MFG SRAM DUB BB86/92 bottom bracket and the new power meter on my Tantan X21. Pretty straighforward, no issues whatsoever with either install. Had some minor front derailleur adjustmens that amounted to a couple of turns on upper and lower limit screws. I had two decent rides over the weekend and no issues on the road.

Considering that the VB-099 and the X21 are pretty much clones of each other, i'd imagine the BB set up would work on the VB-099 for anybody looking for a SRAM DUB crankset.

Unfortunately, Wheels MFG doesn't make a thread together press fit for Sram DUB, one that fits a BB86/92 bottom bracket anyway. Here's what they offer.

https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-brackets/bb86-92/bb86-to-29mm-dub-compatible-kit-for-pressfit-86-92-bottom-bracket-with-flanged-dual-row-black-oxide-sealed-bearings.html

They have an upgraded version of the same set-up for $137. It's a shame, but I'm converting over to a power meter that requires Sram DUB, so I'm switching out my Wheels MFG threaded press fit for this Wheels MFG Sram DUB set up. Should have that completed in time for a weekend ride, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Nope, just the information they have on the page, which looks pretty new. Looks like a newish product for them.

The website does make it look really good. I'd go ahead and reach out to them with any questions you might have, I just suggest using the messenger/chat option.

While on the topic or power meters and cranks. I have been thinking of going to spider based power. Any good Chinese options for 24mm cranks? I'm running bb86 so I don't want to switch to 30mm cranks. Been trying to hunt down a skypivot crankset without any luck. It seems like rotor is the only option but fairly expensive for what it is.

https://xcadey.com/product/xpower-power-meter-crank/

Xcadey was a little slow to get back to me, but once they did, they were pretty responsive. I was able to confirm that this spider/crank combo fits a BB86 24mm spindle. They even updated the page so that you can now choose your crank length.

Browsing through various forums, testing from Dplama. Granted, I think I stopped looking at anything past late '20, I think August. Sounds like they sorted things out since then but there is only so much Googling I'm gonna do.

I'm new to this and I'm definitely not trying to throw shade on Sigeyi.

I definitely appreciate your input Irishrider, but it sounds like you're moving over to Magene. They make plenty of straight swap hardware and I'm looking forward to hering about Magene. Would love to hear more of your positive experiences carbonazza, your set-up, etc.

Honestly, I was hoping to hear more about the Zrace + Sigeyi because it's one BB change away from a straight swap, but that's a big change that may or may not be worth the powermeter upgrade no matter how well the powermeter works, but, as I said, all input is welcome!

I'm going to bail on this set-up. Seems like Sigeyi keeps releasing firmware updates that introduce more issues than they fix. I'm not keen on switching to DUB in the first place. Looking at the Xcadey spider/crank set-up that is capable of using the 24mm BB86, but the company has been completely unresponsive.

I'm may do the single crank after all, or save my pennies for a major brand spider/crank.

Thanks everybody!

You "could" tighten it more. The instructions for the FSA top cap I was using says you can go up to 5 Nm, but you're supposed to tighten "until proper bearing load is achieved". The instructions say 6-9 Nm for the compression plug itself. <edit: do not overtighten your compression plug, even if it is slipping! I never got close to 9 Nm, and decided to try a different one rather than risk cracking my steer tube.>

My experience with my frame has been that if I had to use more torque than 2, maybe 3, definitely not more than 4 Nm, then it was because the bearings weren't loading correctly. The biggest issue I had early on was that the TanTan compression plug kept slipping, no matter how much I tightened the plug itself, so the top cap was never able to tighten down the headset regardless of the torque used on the top cap. When I switched to the FSA plug, it held much better, and that's when I started having issues with binding up the steering. The binding would happen at around 1 or 2 Nm on the top cap.

Seems like it is sorted out now, and it really doesn't take much torque on the top cap to load up the bearings properly.

The top cap? 2ish Nm. Didn't take much to tighten down the head set once I got everything sorted out.

the one from park tool is definitely the gold standard. however i found another kit on ebay a little while back and tried it out while swapping handlebars on my bike. it works just as well as the park tool one and its like 1/5 the cost. i found it amazon as well so it may be better to order off of there if its faster shipping for you

Oh, yeah, that looks like it has the same, most useful cable as the Park Tools. Nice. Remember though, Masta hasa wife that buys him tools, so price is no object.
