29er / Run derailleur housing through 56/57 frame?
« on: July 12, 2014, 10:30:12 AM »
Anybody drill out their 56/57 frame to run the full derailleur housing?
I know it is not needed but less exposed wire, even inside the frame, is better.
I am pretty sure I have read where it has been done but wanted to bring it up over here.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: FRONT FORK SPECS
« on: July 12, 2014, 06:58:35 AM »
yes, the forks usually come with a steerer tube that is 1 1/8" top to bottom(goes through the headset of the bike...and the handlebars attach there)...the other current standard is a steerer tube that is 1 1/2" by the fork and slims to 1 1/8" as it is going through the headtube.   Not sure how old your Huffy is, but I am thinking it 1" or 1 1/4" through the headtube.
Best is for you to measure your headtube for its width - rough measurement where the Huffy badge is located.
Or, post the model and maybe it can be figured out.
Let me know if I am not understanding your question.

29er / Re: Carbonal Orion build thread. Aiming for 8.5kg (18.75lbs)
« on: July 11, 2014, 01:12:10 PM »
Over a year ago, I was set with Carbonal to get the Gaea or Orion...then the 56/57 with 142 dropout came out and I switched to that.
They haven't offered much in the 29" size(same frames from over a year) - more they look to be into the 27.5 size - if I were to go with that size I would go with Carbonal's Venture.
I guess, mainly, people are looking for the newest thing - 142 dropout or superlight frame(256)

Is it still 4-6 wks?
You might try Miracle or Honsen for their 256 version.

On a 29" it is under 435-440mm
I don't know - wasted my time reading this thread:  http://forums.mtbr.com/29er-bikes/long-vs-short-chainstays-784542.html
some say they can tell others not
Summary:  short chainstays are associated with a more nimble bike(makes some sense...bike is shorter) that climbs better(this is a toss up to me) vs. long is more stable at speed(makes sense to me....more bike)
Ultimately, the sum of the total bike and not any one part.

I think the XT deal is just for the caliper - esp. because that is all in the picture and because of this review:

The caliper itself is great - typical Shimano XT level quality. But it doesn't come with the banjo fitting or bolt as pictured. Instead it comes with a "dummy" bolt installed. So you need to buy the fitting and functional bolt separately, or as I did, the bolt and a Jagwire Quick Fit hose. Another $50 to do both front and rear brakes. Doesn't detract from the.

Looking at this differently,  GENERALLY, I see riders looking for shorter chainstays...450mm  is quite long.
Just asking on that....
What is your riding going to be - it may help your choice also.

The key is top IS42 and bottom IS52 - 'campy' style
The 110 series is their premium grade...their 40 series will work
There are other brands also:   For the money, I would look at an Atomlab or Token or FSA for around $50.00 bucks.
Or, I found another on ebay and listed it in the components section? of chinertown.

most of us have 056/57 frames that didn't have the direct mount.
not many 256 frame owners yet - does it look clean without it?

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Merlincycles.com

merlincycles.com - located in England
Generally good prices....periodically do a special of some kind
My experience:  good with a caveat
I took advantage of 10% XTR discount on 3 parts - shipping was free over $86.00
Parts shipped on June 25th and arrived on July 3rd(missed July 2nd)
2 of 3 parts were removed from OEM packaging and vacuum packed*
All parts arrived in good order - caveat * brakes didn't come with cut down pieces(olive and pin)...but I pointed it out to them and they immediately shipped them(haven't received them yet)
All correspondence was answered and within 12 hours(no matter when I sent it)
Overall, definately recommend merlincycles.com

Component Deals & Selection / Re: high end drive train comparisons
« on: July 07, 2014, 07:18:31 AM »
Yeah, XX1 is the standard(so to speak)...when looking at costs though...but more what you are doing and where you ride...you could get a high end drive train and high end brakes(or other upgrade) for the price.
All comes back to how much one wants to spend...the IP-256 paired with XT components....will be a very nice bike, solid and ridable.  XT level is great all around but not light.  That bike though would be....say 5000 to 6000 at XT level by majors?
I guess I am amazed at everybody's bike build and choices...I tend to look from a racing perspective while others for work and different...the chiner world is such a great place to express and such.
