The 1" Gorilla tape is almost a perfect fit for these rims.

The tape is almost exactly the same width as the channel, but since the bottom of the channel isn't flat there is a small gap (~1 mm) on each side.

I got the hubs ordered; should come one day next week.

I received the rims today.  The main delay was me deciding whether to build them myself or order a full wheel set-  I finally decided to try building them myself.  Peter shipped the next day, and EMS shipping took 8 days.

The rims weigh 405 and 410 g on my cheap hanging scale.  So far the plan is to build them up with DT Swiss 350 hubs and Revolution spokes.  After reading a bit, I'm leaning toward getting the hubs in and doing a spoke measurement before ordering a full set of spokes.

I've got an XT rear der with the clutch, and I still hear the chain slapping on really rough, fast sections when I have the front in the little ring- probably just too much extra chain for it to control all the slap, and it is closer to the chainstay to begin with.  Since I don't always remember to shift back to the big ring at the top of climbs, I put some tape on mine.

I guess not  :)

I'm looking at building the iPlay rims with DT Swiss 350 hubs, since they are available with centerlock mounts and are half the price of 240s for about a 2 ounces weight penalty.

Using the DT spoke calculator with an ERD of 597 mm, I get a range of 289 to 291 mm spoke length. Anyone want to double check for me, or does this sound correct?  Should I go with the 291 mm spokes for all of them (easier to buy one box)?  I assume having 2 mm sticking out inside the wheel won't touch anything, but will there be enough threads on the spoke if I use a 291 instead of 289?

Thanks!

Anyone have the Novatec 711/712 hubs, or would you suggest another set that Iplay uses in their wheels?

You should be able to get either frame with the 135 mm QR dropouts- mine is an 057 with the QR dropouts.

The 056/057 frames use a 34.9 mm clamp on front der and the cable comes from the top.  Not sure about the size of the Goblin tube, but it is the same style front derailleur as the 056/057.

The 256 has a direct mount front, and the cable comes from below which is different from the Goblin frame.  You could probably get it to work, but it is a different setup.

Looks like the Goblin also has a tapered headtube, so you should be OK there.  The small 056/057 and 256 are 105 mm long, but the other sizes are longer, up to 135 mm.  The Airborne page shows all Goblin sizes with a 110 mm headtube length and a couple of spacers, so as long as you didn't shorten the steer tube you should be OK.

The IP-256 drawing I got from iPlay doesn't show standover, but for the 056/057 it is 769, 805, and 826 mm or 30.3, 31.7, and 32.5 inches respectively.  I would like a bit more, but I haven't smacked my nads on the top tube yet.

I have the Necco headset that IPlay sells.  Some don't like it, but it works for me so far.

Thanks guys- I've never built a wheel before, but have wanted to.  I'm thinking this is a good reason to go ahead and do it.  I'm about 200 lbs/90 kg plus water and riding gear.  I don't ride aggressively, but I don't always pick the cleanest line either so durability will be important.  Any suggestions on hubs, spokes, etc.?  How many spokes should I go with for front and rear?

The other option would be to just have IPlay build them up, but I'd still have the same questions on hubs, spoke count, etc.

Cross country with obstacles.  I don't do anything you'd see in a video, but I do like some landmines in the trail to keep it interesting.  I also have a road bike, but if I had to choose I'd pick the mountain bike first.

Holy crap!  Thanks guys- first time I've ever won anything on the internet, if you don't count those Nigerian lotteries.

Not sure what I'll do with them yet, but I will post pics.  Since I have another set of rims, I guess that means I need to build another bike :)

Could you make one with some aluminum shim stock-  cut out a rectangle and press it on to the frame to form it, then glue it on?

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Re: Merlincycles.com

I ordered a full XT group and a wheelset from Merlin.  Very satisfied with the purchase, and their website makes it easy to pick out the options you want when ordering a full group (for Shimano, anyway).  Shipping took a little over a week; everything was well packed.  All of the components were in their original boxes, with instruction in about 18 different languages.

DOH! Need to read a little closer...  At least they are shipping frames now.
