Hey zooky,

could you keep us updated.

Did it work, are you going to claim warranty (does it even work, like do they respond and so on) or how are you going to do it????

Carbonda is very responsive and the customer service people are easy to work with. I’ve never heard of them ghosting anyone or treating them poorly.

That said, I’m not completely sure what their response to this would be.

Hey All,

Have had the frame now for about 18-19 months. I pulled out my rear brake hose because I want to change brake set.

As a test, I tried to re-run a outer housing cable back to the rear, but it seems like the "curve/turn" part just before the BB is worn out/broken/gone.  The cable now just pops out straight in the BB area  :(

Anyone else notice this?

Ive half given up trying to get a cable through and probably will externally route the new rear brake hose.

I haven’t touched my cable routing since the initial build, but having seen those routing tubes (which sure look like rolled paper soaked in a little glue), I’m not super surprised one broke under the kinds of riding this frame is meant for.

Definitely something to keep an eye on. If I ever change the brakes on mine, I’d try to use the previous hose to route the new one (or just attach new lever and caliper to existing hose, if that’s an option but it often isn’t). Normally you can just tape the new hose to the front end of the old one and pull it through, but in this case you’d probably want something more robust to hold the two together as it passed through the missing section.

If the tube broke off entirely, I’d expect to find it rattling around inside the frame….

I just ordered a 707, which will be my third Carbonda build after an FM1002 (170F/150R AM 29er) and FM1003 (single crown 180mm DH/enduro 29er). Carbonda has a very solid reputation and my experiences have borne that out.

The 707 uses the same drop-in 1.5/1.5 headset setup as the FM1002, to give the option of headset cable routing. I’ve found their OEM headset to be prone to rust, knocking/creaking, and dirt/water ingress. I replaced the one on my 1002 with an FSA no.55R-558 (no cable routing) and have been very happy with it…precise tolerances so you don’t need the thin spacers the OEM headset uses to correct for imprecision, and better protected against the elements. If you want headset cable routing, the no.55 ACR should have the same benefits.

I picked the 707 for multiple reasons and didn’t even really consider VeloBuild, but looking over the CX-002’s spec sheet I see several differences in favor of the 707 if you want maximum gravel firepower…being a gravity MTB rider that’s my focus. Since you’re considering racing I’m sure your ideal is a bit different, but to my way of thinking:

*50mm clearance is better than 42
*180mm rotor clearance is better than 160
*BSA threaded BB is better than press fit
*707 strikes me, visually, as a bit more rugged

…however, you’re talking to someone who’s putting a suspension fork on his 707 that is heavier than the frame itself! I’m planning to do a substantial amount of trail riding with mine and I like to spice up my gravel rides any way I can, including small jumps that might end up not being so small with this new build.

On the flip side of that argument, thinking more like a racer: the CX-002 is significantly lighter (claimed weight)…about 300g less on the frame and 100g less on the fork.

The stem will be short with rise, but less than on my 56cm 2016 GT Grade this will be replacing. current 46cm Salsa Cowbell bars will be replaced with something a little narrower (44-45cm) that ideally has rise, mild flare, and shallow drop but I’m having trouble finding an alloy bar that has all three. Might have to just try something like the Surly Truck Stop or Ritchey Corraltos, and keep experimenting if I’m not happy with the results.

I’ll be using a pair of MTB hubs (Hope Pro 4 rear and Industry Nine Torch front) rebuilt with DT Swiss GR531 rims, and probably try out the Schwalbe Thunder Burt 2.1 (50mm on those 24mm internal rims) as my first tires.

Other parts will mostly carry over from my old bike for now, but I do need better cable actuated brakes. The current TRP Spyres are not confidence inspiring. Was thinking about State Bicycle Co cable actuated hydraulics but am still looking around and need to refresh my memory on all the AliExpress type options like Onirii before deciding.

This will be my third Carbonda build, and it’s a big relief to finally be getting it started.

Order is in for a large 707 with external routing, and I’m planning to run it with a SR Suntour GVX suspension fork for a very upright setup. Obviously for a frame design that’s a few years old now this presents some geometry challenges but I think I can live with them.

Gravel (and a bit of road when there’s no choice) fills a big part of my riding year, particularly in spring so that I can stay fit to do the enduro/DH riding I’m really passionate about. But I have injuries and a nasty autoimmune disease that have done a lot of damage to pretty much all my bones — spine and neck in particular — so even with a short high rise stem I run into a lot of back problems. This build aims to be as capable as possible for trail and steep backcountry dirt roads but as gentle on my back as drop bars will allow.

You can specify the routing you want when you order. You can probably request a port on one side only if you want to commit to 1x.

Thanks for clarifying that. I just sent the basics of my order request to Wing so she can issue me an invoice, but haven’t specified the size or external routing yet. I figured it would save me a step (with the usual day or so email turnaround time) to ask here first.

Does the 707 always come with external cable routing ports or do I have to specifically request that? Some of the frames in this thread don’t seem to have any.

Getting a UDH from Ali could work out if anyone has had good experiences with a specific company, but in general you’d be risking another one made of soft metal that might seize (less an issue if you grease it well first), or strip out.

I believe that’s one of their Universal Derailleur Hangers so you can get any UDH hanger. Personally I like Wheels Manufacturing…I replaced all my Carbonda hangers with them after one seized up and snapped off while trying to remove and the other had to be removed with an Easy-Out because the hex interface stripped out.

What I really want to see is one of these types of frames with bigger brake rotor options and a suspension-corrected fork/geometry that works well with 40-50mm travel. I need a very upright cockpit to prevent drop bars from destroying my already damaged spine, and would like something at the leading edge of current trail-capable gravel bikes without crossing over into an XC flat bar hardtail.

Those grommets are a real PITA. I tried repeatedly to get them seated right (came out of place during cable install) and eventually gave up trying. Even had a local shop give it a go and no dice.

Ended up just leaving them imperfectly seated and it’s never been a problem.

Here is my final build:
"Framed" Frame
160 Lyric
Fox DPX2
Elite Wheels "Enduro" 40mm external 30mm internal
SRAM AXS Drivetrain. Mic of GX, XX1, and X1 Carbon Cranks
Ali-x dropper 150mm
RF stem
Brand-X Carbon Bars
Ali-x Carbon Saddle

30lbs 1oz without pedals.
Can't wait to put it through it's paces, but winter.....

Excellent build! I see you opted not to go with the X2 — was there any particular reason(s) for that?

This is how my FRAMED Piedmont/Flybike build ended up.   (If need to be ridden now and tuned.) - But it is winter....

What did you use to cover the Framed logo? It blends well.
