I’m ordering a Carbonda FM1002 in the next couple of days and they give the usual 7-14 day estimate but I’ll post an update here when it actually arrives.

Recently my AliExpress orders are taking around six weeks but I haven’t really made enough of those yet to be a good basis for comparison.

" it’s as much a cosmetic thing as anything else for me."
Having a longer dropper post and a bike designed to handle it is not just a cosmetic feature for many people riding aggressive terrain.

Of course, but in terms of whether it really matters to the average rider, they aren’t necessarily going to use most of the drop on any sized post. You and I certainly do, but outside of enduro racers and hardcore gravity types I rarely see people use more than a couple of inches of drop. Personally I have a horrible spinal condition that means I only use most of the drop when I really need to, and only for short periods.

I’m a huge bike fashion queen and care way too much about the aesthetics though, so I was mostly just trying to make a joke. I know that doesn’t always translate well into text..

29er / Re: Carbonda FM1001/1002 headset question
« on: December 28, 2021, 06:32:49 PM »
If your fork doesn't have a carbon steerer then skip the expanding plug.

That’s what I figured, but since this is my first experience with this type of 1.5in-to-1.5in headset I wondered if there was a specific reason they don’t include a star nut.

I guess you wouldn’t necessarily expect to get one with a regular headset either, and the top cap/bolt they include should be usable with both — though I’ve already got a custom engraved flat cap and bolt I’ll be using for this bike.

The ~270 degree internal metal collar seems to be there for use with the “through the headset” internal routing option and the cutout in it doesn’t serve any real purpose with the regular version but it does make me nervous that somehow the steerer is less securely supported at the top (a real concern for a hard charging 170/150 AM bike) so I might get a third party 1.5in headset anyway.

But I figured I should ask 1001/1002 owners about their experiences with the stock one in case there are any quirks I should be aware of.

29er / Carbonda FM1001/1002 headset question
« on: December 28, 2021, 12:07:10 PM »
I’m placing an order for a 1002 and noticed that the included headset comes with what looks like a carbon plug instead of a regular star nut and top cap.

In my experience with Carbon steerer tubes, these can work themselves loose with hard riding and are a little heavy.

Can I just use a regular top cap and star nut with this headset or is the expanding plug required for some reason (I can’t imagine why)?

And while we’re at it, is there anything else I should know about this headset? The ~270-degree internal collar (with space for cables to be routed through even though I’m not getting the internal routing version and will just be using the head tube routing ports on the frame) is a little unusual…

Hey thanks for the recommendations! The FS830 looks really good! I can see in the thread for it there was the question asked about the pivot bearing design but no feedback yet, but there are people who seem happy with them so maybe it's fine?

The FS947 also looks really good, but I'm a medium frame with my Giant and you're saying that max 135mm of seatpost engagement might not be enough for a decent dropper post? I'll have to check what the drop of my current giant one is, it's definitely 'enough' but I still do hit the seat sometimes when moving around a lot.

Check the reach and head tube length numbers on the 947, you could probably do OK with a large if you were raising the front end/cockpit to shorten the reach and maybe over-forking by 10mm. Personally I do find being able to run a super long dropper helps in the steeps…but it’s as much a cosmetic thing as anything else for me.

Having the outer tube of the post sitting up super high out of the frame is something to be avoided in modern bike fashion

Fairly safe bets:
*Carbonda FM1002
*Light Carbon FS947

Unproven, some questions about link bearing design but otherwise promising:
*FS830 (open mold, sold by Haideli and TopFire)

Not recommended due to ongoing bearing/linkage issues without a proven solution:
*AM831

Looks like an Ican frame? If so, should be plenty of feedback out there. Travel range is probably with different stroke shocks...

TopFire does seem to use open molds in common with several other vendors, so that wouldn’t be too surprising, but I don’t see this on ICAN’s site or in any of its marketplace listings….

Haven’t seen much discussion about this one, and its description/geo is a bit confusing (does the chart indicate 160mm rear travel and a 180 fork? There’s no indication of adjustable travel). But it seems promising.

Before I decide to commit to the safe but slightly boring 4-bar option with the upside down shock (FM1002), one of the frames I could build with a 185x55 shock I already have (FM1001 or LCFS947 though I don’t love the looks of the latter), or roll the dice on a Haideli FS830 despite the issues with the 831….I thought this TopFire frame might be worth looking into more closely.

And how does it pedal? Is it decent in flats and climbs?

I don’t know how familiar you are with progressive geometry, but steep seat tube angles have noticeably countered the problem of pedaling/climbing a long travel bike. Better suspension has helped a lot with that problem too.

As long as you’re working with decently efficient suspension, weight/rolling resistance is usually more of a problem than the amount of travel you have.

The seat tube on a modern long travel bike is already so steep that shortening the fork will make the handling skittish and keep you from getting weight over the back with the dropper up. Personally I don’t think most modern bikes feel right unless you *add* 10-20mm of fork travel over stock.

That 830 looks interesting too.

It does, on paper, but as some of the folks affected by the 831 situation have pointed out, there’s an extra risk in trusting a company that would bring such a flawed product to market without adequate field testing, and then charge $200+shipping for a “fix” that itself still appears to be fatally flawed.

The 830 *looks* like it wouldn’t suffer from the same problems, but with no field testing, we can’t be sure…and a dual-link swingarm bike puts lots of strain on the links’ bearings so it wouldn’t take much of a design flaw to cause issues with flex, bearing damage etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely tempted by the 830 myself and would rather have one than a relatively generic 4-bar with an upside down shock. But I’m doing an unbranded frame build because I’m on a tight budget — not because I have the leeway to try all over again with a second frame because the first was a lemon.

Chainring was slightly awkward as I had to run zero offset to get everything inline, good excuse to buy a nice oval cnc one.

Could you explain that? Is it a quirk of the frame or some other reason? I’d normally expect a boost bike to work with a 3mm offset…..

I'm blown away by how well it rides. slightly naughty paint job.
It climbs as well as my sonder transmitter hardtail and descends a whole lot faster.
I've bashed it through Scotland and down some big drop offs without any concens. Its not has a few stone chips and not looking quite so pretty.

Chainring was slightly awkward as I had to run zero offset to get everything inline, good excuse to buy a nice oval cnc one.

I'm still waiting for a new one up dropper post but everyone seems out of stock. Also if anyone can recommend any good carbon wheels  (30 -35mm internal width)

Still happy with your 830? A new group buy thread has sprung up for it and with all the complications of the AM831 situation, it’s a tempting alternative to a four-bar like the FM1002.

I prefer 2.6 or at least wide 2.5 clearance, but otherwise on paper this seems like one of the best options out there.

Looks like that yellow frame is the only one I can find anywhere that’s been built up. I can see why it’s mentioned multiple times in that thread as an alternative to the 831, though it does look like only a small sample manufacturing run has been done up to this point.

If it’s available to ship more or less now, and that guy still has no complaints, it’s tempting. I do wish Haideli would make these frames with a little more tire clearance than 2.4, though.

I think it was announced last year. And I remember they sent out some of the smaller frames already. There's a thread on here with a guy who painted his like a yellow Pivot Firebird.

For some reason the search wasn’t bringing it up with any of the keywords I used, but I finally found it.

I guess with all the activity in the threads about the other frames I’m considering, this one being idle for a while made me forget all about it.

Hasn't it been around for a while though?  I remember looking at it a while ago, looks like it could be a nice ride but it is ugly like a Ripmo (fight me!)  It is probably the frame I should have bought.

I think you’re right, I do remember looking it up a few months ago. I guess I was thrown off by Eddy referring to it as a “new mold.” I was more just thinking about the timing of a new group buy thread for it being posted now.
