29er / Re: The Shiny New AM831 Group Buy (A) Thread!
« on: November 18, 2021, 02:44:02 AM »
I am buying a dvo topaz t3 from a guy who took it off his ibis, just fully serviced as well. Accessing the pump valve doesn't really bother me as I like to adjust the shock once and leave it as is haha..

The problem with that is that the bladders are known to lose air slowly over time so you have to top them off every few rides, or at least once or twice a month, just to be sure.

But if you’re able to figure out a solution we’d be very interested to hear about it. Right now my next best alternative is either an unknown tune Super Deluxe Select+ off Ali for $422, a 2018 Bronson tuned (Low damping) 210x55 Super Deluxe Ultimate for about $600, or a stock Medium tune Fox Float X for $520 (Performance Elite)-$600 (Factory). Not really sure where to get a custom tuned Fox shock out of the box these days, and it’s hard to find even the default tune 210x55 in stock right now.

I’m looking for something to pair with a Marzocchi Z1 most likely, and want a piggyback with a good damper (so no RS Select or Fox Performance stuff, only Select+/Performance Elite or better) but I’m trying to keep this build under $4000 without cutting too many corners….so being able to use any old 210x55 Topaz would be nicer than any of the other options I see so far. Who knows when the second generation T3 will be available.

If access to the piggyback air pressure port is a problem on the existing Topaz (and looking at the one I have on my Force, I think it probably will be a problem on an 831; most shock pump attachment ends are quite long) it will probably be an issue on the Suntour TriAir too — the IFP piggyback is a little longer but fills the same basic way.

Plenty of room for the Topaz T3 but you may have some issues airing the bladder chamber depending on your shock pump.  As others said, it will fit most air shocks other than the ones with gear on the damper end like the Fox X2, Rockshox Vivid air, Cane Creek DB, etc.  Basically the same ones that won't fit on the HT v2.

That’s a very good point. I’ve noticed a lot fewer Topaz shocks on VPP bikes since SC went to the lower mounting. I’m sure there’s a good solution for that, but I’d want to be sure before I bought one for an 831 whether a normal shock pump fits comfortably or if you need one with a right angle attachment or adaptor.

I’d been planning to get a Topaz for my 831 build (once I’ve got the money to commit to the group buy,  not sure how soon that’s going to be), but maybe I should be looking elsewhere unless/until somebody confirms exactly how this works for them.

The problem is I really don’t know what other off the shelf shock is likely to be anywhere near close to the right tune…DVO used Santa Cruz as one of the testbeds for their default tune. I guess I can try to find a 210x55 in a Low tune and go from there, but I liked the idea of a one stop shop (and DVO does their own custom tuning service if I need customization).

The good news is that the second generation Topaz T3, which is in production now but not officially for sale yet, has a sideways piggyback like the one on the Topaz 2. Bryson Martin from DVO showed it off on his Instagram recently.

Guys,

This one already comes with a threaded BB but would the crankset work with a press fit BB92 bottom bracket?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082XQRJXY

thx!

Yes, that should work with any BB that supports a 24mm crank axle.

Any1 knows if a dvo topaz t3 will fit the frame? I know the santa cruz suspension design has quite tight tolerances due to the low shock mounting system

It should. And the Topaz T3’s default tune is already pretty keyed to VPP kinematics (similar to the Low tune of most Fox/RS shocks), so it’s a perfect choice.

Fat Bikes / Re: Modern geo. Fat frame?
« on: November 15, 2021, 03:49:30 PM »
Keep in mind, fat geometry is a bit different than regular geometry. Particularly if you’re riding in ungroomed (or poorly groomed) snow.

You don’t want quite as much long-low-slack in that case because it will tend to get thrown off line, dig into the snowpack, and have huge float imbalances between the wheels (forcing you to manually balance the bike by leaning forward more or standing up). So if you’re new to fat bikes and are looking for “progressive” geometry, don’t get to attached to the latest enduro-like numbers. Something more balanced tends to be the most practical bike for snow riding.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Headset for AM831?

Yes, that model of Cane Creek should work. I think *any* IS42/52 should work, but that model has been specifically verified to fit well.

I might be confused and misunderstand this comment but I just want to clarify the comment and thread I linked above has nothing to do with the BB or cranks needed for the 831.  I don't own an 831 so can't advise, sorry.

Whether it’s for the 831 or not shouldn’t matter in this case….the thread I’m talking about discusses the thread-together ZTTO BB86/92 bottom bracket and the issue of crank axle length compatibility. The 831 has a BB92 shell so this is relevant for anyone who wants to prevent the issue of press-fit BB creaking on an 831 or other BB92 frames.

384
Looks like current Shimano (for boost at least) direct mount 68/73 should fit fine according to that thread….fingers crossed.

Just a warning that some people may find this BB too wide for their cranks.  The flanges are wider than "branded" stuff and the double lipped plastic washer adds more width to the point that the crank arm doesn't engage the spindle enough.  You could get by with it but I wasn't happy with the insertion depth and swapped out bb's.

I ordered the ceramic bearing model just to see if I could make it work since the Wheels Mfg version costs over 3X as much (and that’s with metal bearings); what cranks did you have an issue with?

I wonder if that’s the kind of thing that wouldn’t be a problem with a direct mount cinch ring type crank that has a little extra space built into it for the cinch to take up….a lot of 24mm cranks don’t use
cinch rings and only have the crank bolt so they don’t have that extra couple mm of space built in.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: Monsuta x Snacks AM831 build

Thanks a lot..
Couple more more questions, just confirming that the dropper post which I can fit on this frame ( size small ) is

150mm insertion depth and 31.6 dia.. ( looking to get the one up dropper )

http://snpy.in/Wt0xF1

Is this a good fork for the bike ?

https://www.jensonusa.com/Marzocchi-Bomber-Z2-275-Fork-4

Trying to not get very high end as building for my kid who will use it for 3-4 years and then i will need to upgrade to a bigger frame..

The dropper seems fine, but that fork is probably too short for a 27.5 831 build.

I’m thinking about experimenting with a mixed-wheel build for the bigger tire clearance (and maybe the handling) when I get an 831 frame, and even with the 29in front wheel I don’t think I’d be happy with less than a 170 fork. Ground clearance will probably be a big issue with even a mixed wheel build but definitely a 27.5 only, and the longest travel version of the Z2 available there is 150mm, which is under-forking compared to the 160 recommended. That’s gonna be really low.

387
Probably the best option is a thread-together BB92, like the one Wheels Mfg makes. Reduces your chances of creaking. The only reason to get a regular press-fit is because they can accommodate a 30mm crank, whereas thread-together BBs are limited to 24mm.

I could be misremembering — this is the stuff I’m trying to think through before I commit to one or the other — but I believe a 947 from Light Carbon is $620+100 shipping, whereas an 831 from the Tideace store on eBay is about $1000.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and have the money in time for an 831 group buy; I’m a suspension geek/gearhead of many years and would rather have that efficient low slung VPP swingarm.

I can probably learn to live with a 2.4 rear and the other little compromises the 831 requires….but I also have severe arthritis and do quite a bit of jumps etc despite it so a little extra tire is always appealing. And I’m trying to hit the value sweet spot with this build — being able to reuse a DPX2 Factory shock I already have on the 947 is hard to say no to. One less thing I’d have to sell in order to fund the build.

Since I’d probably be getting a Large, is the whole crown race spacer thing even an issue for me?

That’s good to know. There are a lot of things I like best about the 831 out of the options I have for an modern “enduro” 29er unbranded frame, but I’m still trying to decide if I can live with a 2.4. I run 27.5x35mm internal rimsx2.8 on my current enduro bike (2020 GT Force) and demoed a 2021 Hightower this summer that reminded me of both the good and bad things about typical skinny tires. I think I’d be much happier with 2.6s.

The Light Carbon FS947 is my other candidate and while not nearly as easy on the eyes (or the suspension kinematics, probably), it’s got the tire clearance and a few other things going for it:

*BSA threaded BB
*Takes the same 185x55 trunnion shock as my Force so I already have two shocks that fit it, probably the right tune too
*No questions about fork crown/knob clearance/needing a spacer
*$300-400 cheaper shipped (if I’m not able to get in on an 831 group buy; it might be weeks more before I have the money for a frame), plus saves me ~$500 on a shock

The seat post insertion depth on the 947 is a bit short, it’s ~400g heavier, and it probably has a higher center of gravity than the 831 so probably a little disadvantage on handling. But I feel like I’m losing the argument with myself to justify the 831…

Maybe I’ll build a 947 this winter and then an 831 in the spring when I’ve sold enough other bikes to help pay for it.

I’m pretty sure that’s a typo and he really meant 230x57.5.

I’ve never heard of a 230 shock with less than 50mm stroke.
