Component Deals & Selection / Re: How I painted my frame

Thats too much IMHO. However that really depends on which part of the planet you live in.
I made a deal with a car body body shop.
Paint cost me under 10$
Primer, CC, labor was like 30$.

I did the sanding but nasty stuff is handled by the shop.
40$ in total.

Looks very nice, obviously quite different than Jannmayer's paint job.
Whereabouts in the world are you and how did you go about it? You sanded, brought a masked frame to them, they did the primer, they painted, they applied the clear coat, and you got your finished frame back?
I quite like the idea of liaising with a car body shop, there's a million of those around me.

ETOE on youtube made a video about that very topic, from what i remember (mixing gloss & matte), fade either in the same of a different video for sure.
I think i remember him saying mixing gloss and matte is boss level, in terms of difficulty.
Whenever i look at all the steps involved in painting, I get headaches. Good luck and post your results!

I'm running 25c tires with the RideNow TPU tubes and pump them up to around 90-100 psi. They hold air far better than latex tubes, though I still pump them before every ride just to have optimal pressure. Puncture resistance has been quite good so far. I even had a sidewall tire cut and you could see the tube inside the tire, but no puncture. I don't have any experience with Tubolitos.

Honestly I was planning to go all tubeless since I'm already tubeless on my gravel bike, but these RideNow TPU tubes have a significant weight advantage with lightweight clincher tires. I also feel the ride quality is quite decent.

can I ask why you run these over latex tubes, given you pump up every ride, as latex has lower rolling resistance. is it weight? I'm thinking of buying a couple to carry as a puncture kit because they re so tiny, but i've been very pleased with latex. My stats show i'm faster with GP500 + latex, all else equal.

I admire your tenacity, and thank you for taking the time to share the details of the work.
I wish I could just dip a frame in a bathtub of paint and be done with it...
Do you have a sense for how much the project ended up costing you? 2 cans of primer, 2 cans of clearcoat, plus the different paints, the specialized masking tape, it ends up being pretty significant i presume?

I chuckled at this statement, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because you're new here.

Sorry, English isn't my first language. That was not criticism, I really thought you do love Specialized!

I decided to retire my VB-168 frameset and rebuild my VB-177.  My current fleet is already filled with aero bikes that I ultimately prefer, and I just found myself not really liking the 168 even for what it is.

Now having ridden the 168 and 177 back to back, I think the 177 might be the better value.

That's interesting. The descriptions on VB say both are "2021" frames, but only the 177 talks about carbon (T1000) and build tech (EPS & latex moulding). The 168 just says nothing. That would support the theory that the layup / build quality on the 177 is better.

I was assuming the 168 would be stiffer because of its shape, but you're saying the 177 is in fact stiffer and just rides better?

You're clearly a specialized fanboy, how did the 168 disappoint? I realize your Allez Sprint is not the geometry of an SL7, but it's fairly close. You're saying you could tell them apart?

Did you measure the weight difference between the 2 frames?

Can you fit 32mm on the 177?

Just received a size 52 frame in matte black with the separate bar and stem.  https://imgur.com/a/F90D6Bd

Shipped 8 days after the order was placed and shipping took 7 days to Pennsylvania.  Overall, I'm impressed for the price.  Frame with derailleur hanger is 1020 grams - about 100g more than what I would expect a genuine Tarmac frame and 200g more than the S-Works.  Not bad.  The rest of the components come in at very respectable weights.  The bar and stem are quite a bit lighter than the Tarmac system and I could save 100g with a lightweight seatpost from Aliexpress.

The frame and fork are clean from what I can see other than some imperfections in the paint work that I wouldn't expect to get through QC for a name brand frame. BB looks good and it remains to be seen whether the brake mounts will need faced.

That's great, pictures v promising!
Will be curious to hear about how you feel about ride quality, road feel, vs branded frames you've tried. Diabetic cycling and GC performance have both recently posted videos saying that the VB Pinarello clone rides "heavy" and wouldn't want them as main bikes, despite being light, stiff where you want it stiff, compliant where you want it compliant, tracking well, aero and so on.

Will Juin tech brakes work the same using SRAM / Shimano road shifters? I know that different cable pull ratios mean you shouldn't mix shimano and sram shifter-brake, but Juin Tech doesn't make a Sram version and a Shimano version AFAIK?
If you have a choice between Shimano and Sram with a plan to use Juin Tech brakes, what should you do?

I m late to the party, but i've bought 2 wheelsets from Farsports, and i liaise by email directly. You tell them what you want, they quote you. For 650usd, you can get Sapim CX ray spokes, nice tubeless ready rims and light Novatec hubs from them. I wouldn't look at their website too much, they're trying to sell more expensive stuff that virtually nobody needs (ceramic non sense, untested carbon spokes, DT swiss hubs and so on).

If anyone is interested, I bought this in 38. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3256802845939423.html? Havent installed them yet, but they're stiff AF, i can't bend them at all (off the bike). It's not integrated, but i wanted something i would trust my life with, so I figured a simpler design was likely to be safer. Paid USD41 (in 2021)
Years ago I bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2251801552845472.html? in 42. I've put thousands on km on it, mostly going up and down mountain passes, have had no issue at all. I chose that because that model seemed to be ubiquitous w lots of sales / feedback. Again, I avoided going for something exotic and untested. Paid GBP22 (in 2017)

As an update after I showed them the headtube and asked for a refund, they agreed and asked for the frame to be shipped back. There was no pushback. Refund has not been issued yet as they haven't gotten the frame, but they did pay for a shipping label for me to send the frame back to Shenzhen.

I also found a new Trek Domane SLR frameset that was being sold for cheap so I decided to use that for the time being. In the spirit of this forum I'll go for Chinese carbon wheels

Hi, did you get your money back? What ultimately happened? I think it's a good case study of the serious, or lack thereof, of ICAN.
