Component Deals & Selection / Re: Electronic devices

I'm about to finish my gravel build and my plan is to use a cheap android phone as an ad hoc bike computer. I have no idea if this will work, but if it does, I will have a full featured computer for a fraction of the cost.

Samsung Galaxy phones (generally) have ANT+ antennas, in addition to (of course) GPS and Bluetooth. I picked up a used Galaxy J7 for $50 which has the added bonus of removable batteries. I plan to mount this to a Garmin stem mount using an adhesive-backed adapter on the phone.

I tried this with an s5 and it works alright for short rides. My issue was that the battery only lasted an hour and a half to two hours at most if you have the screen on the whole time whilst using GPS and strava. The wahoo app worked better with all the sensors than strava did for me and if I didn't use GPS I'd get another hour out of the battery. This was after swapping in a new battery.

The other big issue I had with the s5 in particular was that the back cover was removable and when the road got bumpy the phone would separate from the cover (which was attached to the garmin mount) and going flying off . I tried fixing this by super gluing the back cover onto the phone but it just ripped apart a couple rides later.

So now I have a cycling computer, igpsport 620

From what I gather, there are only two in the group that have the problem. I have no issue and the vast majority of the group probably doesn't either, because we don't post when there is no issue! Mine definitely doesn't flex like that!

I have the issue as well. Mentioned in cybrsrce's thread . Cut some plastic shimas as I couldn't find anything to use that would work at the hardware store.

I hope it's not a common problem but realistically not many people who have bought the frame chime in regardless of if they have issues or not. 2 of 2 people with build threads have the issue and like 3 out of the like 7 people who have the frame and regularly contribute have the issue. So I wouldn't brush it off as a non issue for most.

I think I have the same flex in the rear triangle . I had my hand on the chainstay before when trying to check for any lateral movement and it wasn't bad at all but once I put my had on the saddle and tire it flexes something like 20mm very easily. I wonder if this is what caused the rubbing before  ??? . I'm heading to the hardware store tomorrow to see if I can find a shim or washer that'll fit and tighten it up

Looks nice! How do you prevent pedal strikes when using the smaller wheels in a 29er frame?

Its not really an issue. Considering it's pretty much a hightower and that frame is made for both wheel sizes. Im sure tire choice will change things a bit but there's only about a 2mm difference in bb height between using my 29 and 27in wheels

Thank you for the kind words! I'm definitely enjoying it already. Really loving how it rides. Actually on my way to snow valley in big bear to hit a few trails this weekend

I tried the line on the back of the derailleur as well and it doesn't matter if the line is above, below, or right at the teeth tips, the line isn't perpendicular and one side angles away, like the angle is wrong. I cut the chain at front and biggest rear plus 5 and a quick link. Something seems off and not finding what and the shifting isn't great and isn't spinning very smooth.

I've gone over Shimanos installation documents a bunch and keep double checking and expecting to find something off but it hasn't happened yet...

This is how mine lines up now. It was a bit off when the chain was short but sound like you sized yours correctly. My only other thoughts are limit screw not allowing the derailleur to line up with the big cog or maybe hanger is bent?

Has anyone that's gone with Shimano 12 speed been able to get the derailleur set up right? It seems like when the B screw adjustment is correct the derailleur isn't at the right angle. I'm still playing with it but shifting isn't very good so far.

I'm also going to try to find Shimanos specs on derailleur placement in relation to the axle. I'm new to 12 speed but was a bike mechanic for quite a few years and something seems "off".

Yea I'm using shimano 12 speed and its shifting real nice. I used the guide on the back of the derailleur to set up the b screw. My buddy had a bit more trouble but he followed directions on a website that suggested to use a setting that's inbetween what shimano 12speed and sram 12 speed recommends and his has been shifting great ever since.

Are the linkage bolts torqued up enough?  If those bolts aren't loose, did the rear triangle feel all squirrelly?  Looks like it would have to move in a lot to make contact there.

The bolts aren't loose. Riding it down the street and back it felt fine. Not squirlly at all. Now im just even more confused. I'm not sure what else could have caused this

Snacks - please post a picture from further away.

Here's a couple. You can see from where the pedal is it couldn't have been my foot unless I had it at a very awkward angle. I can assure you I did not  ;D

That spot on the left definitely looks like rubbing. I'm assuming the rear triangle is hitting it but the missing paint on the right there has nothing to rub against

So I took the bike for a test ride today and something is really up with this paint job or the frame rubbing. I rode it in my neighborhood on paved street for about 500 feet to test shifting and this is what happened. I can't imagine tiny pebbles flying up off the road would cause something like this on any other bike. I mean I ride my gravel and road bike through here almost everyday and their paint is still fine.

Kydex custom downtube protector.  It still needs a little adjustment.  For reference this is from a 4"x12" piece of thermoform plastic.

that looks great. definitely next on my list!

thanks! its from Santa Cruz for the tallboy 4 and joplin 3. i have another post in this thread with pics of how it fits. its on there very snug and covers the chainstay but im still betting a HT specific one might fit just that much better

Looks good!
How much of a pain was it to do the damper body conversion?

I feel like it's going to be a pain to do a full service but swapping the damper was actually pretty quick. Just reused the oil but did need new air can lube
