Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Velobuild VB-R-177

Sell the 177 frame (Pennies to the dollar) and get a 168.

Having just finished building my 168 and confirming it can fit 32c tires, it’s gonna be used for my endurance/adventure/Roubaix bike. I’ll basically only now need my gravel bike for actual proper gravel.

hmm tbh i wouldnt personally recommend the 168 as an 'all-road' fun bike for everyone just because it can fit wide tyres. @patliean i guess you must be quite comfortable riding bikes with an aggressive-ish racey geometry but i dont think it would be suitable for everyone.

i had the same thought when i was buying my 168 too. but now that i have it, i dont think i would enjoy taking it off road for any more than one hour hahaha

@stiffweenies have you heard of this onirii fire carbon crankset?

I just randomly came across these on 闲鱼 but couldnt find them on taobao nor aliexpress. And the onirii website looks like it hasnt been updated in a while.

The weight looks decent but this seller is asking for 1980rmb

I figured if anyone could find any information on these, it would be you lol

For the headset i requested the specific specs and if the top and bottom are the same. Do you know if the fork is also 31.8? Do you then need a shim or does the compression ring make the fork stay in place? I never had a bike with internal cable routing and i was wondering, why you would want space between the fork and the bearing.

Yes, both top and bottom headset bearings are the same size(if im not mistaken). Sorry, im not sure what the fork diameter where the bearing sits is, but im pretty sure it isnt 31.8 if the bearing is 40mm ID. I think its closer to 40mm. And the fork steerer is 1-1/8" (28.6mm)

You can refer to this video from velobuild for the rest of the headset assembly parts. Btw, this isnt a 168 in the video and some pieces are different different

Great idea

Ive attached a picture of the axles with the specs. I believe you can get j&l lightweight axles with these specs from ebay

Also, i think the inner diameter of the headset bearing is 40mm, not 38.1mm

65
good idea!

for number 3, could you include the fix of adding some micro spacers between the c-ring and top cap?

66
Thanks for your answer. I cut them myself to end right at the connection pins. How did you cut them, not covering those pins?

sorry for the late response. my c-clip doesnt have connection pins. so i cut mine the full length of the c-clip. in that case, im not really sure what you could do.. sorry !

very detailed review. highly appreciated!

the bars sound good. i was tossing up between these and the seka intergrated bars. my friend told me they weigh 325g(but i cant find this listed on their website nor taobao) and will cost me around $260 from taobao. i think i will choose these in the end

thanks again!!

68
Sorry, off topic but id like to know what are your thought on the bars? Ive been considering the one pro bars for a while too. And the manufacturer direct price makes them even more tempting.. have you weighed them yet? Also, do they come with two sets of headset covers or something? In this screenshot from the alibaba page, they list type one and type two

Hi all,
I finished my build in june and have driven it 1300 km since then. I really like the bike in general  :). Luckily I am one of the persons without one of the common quality problems, beside the following issue.
As some other guys i have to use micro spacers, to get get enough space between the top cover of the headset and the head tube. Otherwise the top cover would touch the head tube when compressing the headset.
Unfortunalely my microspacer arrangement slips out of place form time to time, which leads to a loose headset. I attached two photos, to illustrate the problem.
Maybe you can share picutes of your microspacer arrangement or any other advice on how I can address the problem would be very much appreciated. thanks in andvance

Did you cut these micro spacers yourself? Or were they already that shape? ? I cut mine myself and cut them to be the same C shape as the c clip. Yours look like they might be cut too much? So they dont stay around the steerer tube?

These are designed to fit the one pro bars to sl7 frames

I know theyre available on taobao but im not sure if theyre sold on aliexpress or anywhere else

The weight gain should be less than 30g.  The adapters i have were 24g.   6 bolts weigh about 12g.  Subtract that because enough won't need the bolts.

So, 87+24-12 = 99g

Why do you need to subtract 12g for the bolts? Neither of these weights include 6 bolts so i think it wouldnt be necessary? Or am i missing something?

72
What adapter do you use? On Aliex I can only find centerlock to 6-bolt.
The only 6-bolt to centerlock I found is this one
https://r2-bike.com/PROBLEM-SOLVERS-Center-Lock-Adapter-for-6-Bolt-Disc

They are 37g a piece

i use ashima ac03. i think they might be lighter than 37g... cant remember. but they should be on aliexpress for cheaper than the one you linked.

if i remember correctly, they also make lightweight rotors but i dont know how they perform. im guessing similar to brands like kcnc

73
Hi zxcvbnmjm!
Can your guy make other bikes hangers?
Cheers

he can, but minimum is going to be around 50-100 pieces

74
Remind me again the benefits of a direct mount hanger.

so a direct mount hanger is the derailleur hanger + B-link together in one piece. so supposedly it creates a stiffer linkage between the frame and derailleur which results in more precise shifting. Making it one piece will save some weight too

also they provides more room to remove and replace the rear wheel, enabling faster and easier rear wheel changes

and they look a bit cooler  8)

I believe the hanger is the same for the 099. If so, I'm in
i think so too. i will confirm with chris

Interested! Especially if they could be made in accent colors
should be able to but it may cost extra. which colour did you want? send me a reference image and ill ask

Is it just one of these but with thred on the hanger rather than the nut?

oh yeah, these mounts look very similar to the velobuild mounts. but according to that listing's compatibility list, all of those cube models seem to be mountain bikes? and also it looks like the stopper is in a totally different position. which may put your derailleur on a strange angle?

75
im currently in contact with a cnc machinist who has experience in producing direct mount derailleur hangers to have some made for my vb-r-168 and im wandering if anyone else would be interested as i would have to reach a minimum order quantity(still under negotiation)

seems like quite a few open mould frames are using the same derailleur hangers too

i have attached images of my derailleur hanger that i'll be using as reference and some that the machinist has made in the past. im planning to have it designed similar to one of those. feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions!

i am still negotiating and calculating the costs but i am estimating they could end up being around $40 shipped
