29er / Re: Frame advice - hardtail with a 40T (or more) chainring
« on: March 20, 2025, 05:17:23 AM »
I just put a 44t chainring on my dropbar hardtail for a upcoming flat gravel race.

It's the YFM026 from Airwolf. I had a 40t and 42t on it without altering the chainline.
But to fit the 44 tooth chainring I put a extra 2mm spacer on the driveside. The clearance between the chainstay and is 3mm.
Shifting is still fine with Shimano GRX and a 10-51 cassette.

Already made a post about my bike in the MTB-forum, but it's relevant here aswell.

Just like user "Deem" on the first page, I went the MTB-frame with drop bars route. Inspired by the beachracing scene here in The Netherlands and Belgium. But the bikes makes a great and fun gravel bike aswell ! Like others have said, it does require a mix and match of different standards to get the required results.

I went with the Airwolf YFM026, which has a stated max chainring of 40t. But I fitted a 42 already without issue, 44 might be possible aswell if you start playing with the offset. Then I got some Nextie rims that were built with MTB-boost hubs.
In summer I use 2.35" Thunder Burts and it makes for a super fast and fun gravel bike!

There is one brand that started dabbling into a gravel frame with 60+ mm clearance. It's a super small Dutch brand, but they bought their previous frames from Chinese manufacturers. I would love to know which manufacturer so we could buy it direct from them.

Does anyone have some updates about these pedals?

I'll add my experience with the H303.

I bought it after my Garmin HRM died after 3 years of use. The H303 connects to all my devices just fine. The readings seems to be exactly the same as the Garmin. My max HR is within 1 BPM, so that's within the margin of error, or my maximal HR has indeed been lower the last 4 months.
I use the HRM at least 6 days per week, I track all my rides, runs and other activities with it.

So far, great buy for 20€ instead of 50€ for the Garmin.
Let's see if it keeps holding up over the next months.

I've been comparing the Wahoo Kickr and Xcadey power-meter and changed the scale to 105% but I do miss the offset function as well.
Another potential point of improvement for the Xcadey is that the APP does not show the latest adjusted scale value...

The Sigeyi was more than US$100 more expensive, which I felt a bit much for a power-meter that cost US$250 with the Xcadey brand.

If I read this correctly, the Xcadey was reading low for you? Since you had to scale it up to 105% ?

I should probably do some specific testing against my indoor trainer (Elite Suito). But at the moment, it feels accurate, or even reading a bit higher than my trainer. But I always just assumed this is due to drivetrain losses (point of measurement). And the fact that riding indoors just feels harder.

Hi,
There is a entire subforum dedicated to gravel bikes and cyclocross bikes
It's at the bottom of the forum (It's called cyclocross bikes, but it's basicly exclusivly gravel now)

i cannot find anything about the mira factory, can you help me with a link?

http://mira-factory.com/Product/index/id/34.html
But there is no mention of the TT918 on the mira-factory website so i'm not 100% certain they are supplier for Falco (I haven't bothered contacting Mira or Falco yet).

The Falco TT918 looks amazing, with the deep forks. But the price is pretty steep.

Finally finished my VB-TT build. Only ridden on Turbo so far so no idea on road feel / secureness of contact points (particularly concerned about Bars / Seatpost slipping on bumpy terrain)

Components:

SRAM Force Rear Mech
2 pairs of SRAM AXS Wireles Blips
76 Projects Blip Holders
RideRever Trivia TT Brakes
Stock Basebar and Vision TFE Clone Bars
Pass Quest 56t Single Chainring
Dura Ace R9200 167.5 mm Crankset
KMC 12 Speed Chain
Praxis T47 Integrated Bottom Bracket (Shimano)
Shimano 105 R7100 11-34t Cassette
ISM PN3.1 Saddle
*I do have a SRAM Red eTap AXS Front Mech and Pass Quest 56/42t Double Chainring for a 2x setup
Tri Spoke and Disc to be obtained in due course.

Cost: £1,921.54 (not including labor to build or 2x Chainset setup)

Bike looks awesome.
And yeah, a disc/trispoke or some 80mm deep wheels will finish it off.

How is the tire clearance in this bike?
Would be awesome to run 32mm (measured) tires for longer events.

I just received my wheels, and put gp 5000 s tr 30 on them, and they sit really in line with the rim.
I can provide measurements and pic tonight(~8h)

Really interested in this exact combo as well!

Ok, finally got it built up and running (wheels were stuck in US customs for like 9 days).

I've never mountain biked before (If I don't count the Trek 930 I had when I was like 12 years old in the 90s that's I'd use on mostly smooth hiking paths, I've never ridden any technical stuff really save a couple times of doing cyclocross and some class 4 roads on my gravel bike that I'd usually have to hike-a-bike on) so I don't really have any worthwhile input other than the bike is fun.
There's a very good trail system about 0.5 mile from my house (which is why I built a MTB...I figured I was wasting opportunity and I get bored of gravel biking in the late summer) with a bunch of green, blue and black trails.
I just rode about 9 miles on dirt roads to see if the bike would fall apart. I was surprised at how slow pedaling a long on a MTB is (the tires I got for it probably are super slow rolling since I went with a really aggressive tread and super sticky compound), also shocked at how fast I could descend poor dirt roads, it just felt immediately natural to bomb over every feature I have to take caution with on my gravel bike.
Rode it up to the trail system, played around with what sort of rocks I could plow over and was surprised again at just how good modern suspension is...rocks that were proud of the road surface about 4 inches I could just run right into at speed and hardly feel anything.  Took it on a green trail that had a ton of roots, rocks and switch backs, was a ton of fun on uphill rooty/rocky sections.

The bike looks great! I love the way the schock sits against the top tube.

Like you thought, the Specialized Purgatory tires are way overkill for a XC bike.
Some basic XC tire combo's I would recommend:
  • Specialized Rengade 2.35" rear, Specialized Fast Trak 2.35" front. This is a good and cheap option
  • Maxxis Rekon Race 2.43 front and rear. Really confidence inspiring tire, but quite heavy
  • Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.35" rear, Schwalbe Racing Ray 2.35" up front. Probably more excpensive in the US
Of course, there are faster combo's or option. But these tires are all really predictable and give good grip for XC riding.

where did you get the fork?  is there another link for that frame that has the fork or did you just request it from the frame builder?  i am looking at the link that is posted and it is frame only.

If you look in the description of the frame on AliX, Airwolf has a rigid fork to go with the frame:
https://a.aliexpress.com/_EyRAvGp
I did 2 build with this frame and fork aswell. We just ordered both on AliX, payed for the "Seller shipping method" on the frame (so we didn't have to pay import tax in Belgium) and messaged Airwolf to ship the fork with the frame (fork was ordered with "Standard shipping").

Not sure if Sven had to pay extra to get the paint on both the frame and fork since we ordered matte black and painted it ourselfs.

Pictures of my build in this thread:

Yeah, just ordered one for a build.

If you don't mind sharing. What did you pay for the frame?
And please update on the progress! Would love to see this one being build up!

Thanks for the advice. I’m 185cm. Probably best stick with a large. I’m uncertain about going for a drop bar or not. I might stick with narrow flat and TT bars.

Those are lovely wheels. What rim is it?

Nextie AGX45 gravel rims laced onto boost hubs (done by Nextie). The rims have a 30mm internal width, so I run 2.35" MTB-tires on them for gravel riding.

My bike was mainly inspired by the beachracing guys here in Belgium en The Netherlands but it makes for a great gravel bike in summer aswell. And I'm actually gonna race on it next winter. All the specialist beachracing bikes have very deep (for aero, but that's debatable, it mainly looks good imo) and wide (so you can run the widest slick posible for good flotation on the sand) wheelsets.

This bikeshop, that specializes in beachracing, sells the Airwolf YFM026 under their own name, with their own brand or 9th Wave branded deep and wide wheels.
If you have a look trough their insta, they some super cool build and paintjobs on this frame: https://www.instagram.com/stormbikesnl/

Full list of parts from my build is attached. Build it for under 2000 euros. But with a LTWoo groupset that isn't performing the greatest. Might have to switch it out for a Shimano GRX set.

These look great. Can I ask about sizing please, What size is frame vs what youd normally run on a MTB?

I run a L Carbon FM936, and a 58cm Cervelo Aspero. I want to build a gravel Scott scale, but don’t know if I should go XL or l. The Scale XL has the same reach as the FM936. The L is 3cm shorter.

We are both 184cm (6ft), so pretty tall. My road bike is a 56cm, but has a long 120mm stem. MTB is a Large Cannondale Scalpel.
The Airwolf is a Large, but I considered a medium for a long time because of the added reach of the drop bars. Eventually, I did decide to go for a Large, mainly because of the seat tube length. The medium would have A LOT of seatpost sticking out.

I then used https://bike-stats.de/en/ to determine stem length, mainly checking against my road bike fit. Settled on a 70mm stem, and looked out for the shortest reach handlebars I could find. In the end, the position is a bit longer, but higher than my road bike. Took about 5 rides to get used to.
