Component Deals & Selection / Re: Gravel Shoe

Which adidas/fiveten shoes do you mean? I actually use fivetens on flat pedal bikes a lot. They are good shoes. I didn't really think about them having more traditional xc/gravel shoes with cleats. Interesting idea.

They're literally called Adidas Gravel Shoes

I've been riding the Adidas gravel shoes for some time now, currently on my second pair. They're comfy and can usually be had for a very good price with some searching. This latest pair was a bit under 60 USD from the Adidas eBay store.

The Noah is available from a handful of manufacturers. Off the top of my head, Tan tan, Longteng, Mondince are all significantly cheaper. I actually like the Mondince FM306...I would have picked it over the GV201 if not for the downtube storage.

A little sneak peek. I'm almost done with paint, the storage cover was a bit tricky. The fork isn't pictured, but it matches the headtube color/effect.
Last minute decision to add some logos and forego any kind of texture on the white portion. Working on the stencils now, should be ready to paint them on and add a couple final coats of clear in the next couple days.

Looks like a Cipollini copy/homage

These have been available for almost a year in GXP, but GRX 48/31 is still my choice because they have a cheap PM option and I can't really find one for GXP with decent cranks. Such a shame they don't make truly modular cranksets, there's good potential

Have you checked out Aerozine? Most of their cranksets use a GXP standard and are modular. They ship with a 126.5mm spindle by default, but I ordered mine with the 130.5 spindle for a better gravel chainline and Q factor. They also come in a huge range of crank lengths, which have a flip chip allowing +-5mm of length adjustment. I'm a big fan of their stuff.
I use the X17 crankset on my gravel bike in size 160-165 (currently set at 162.5).

I'm using PC 1130 chains for my gravel bike and they're great. They have a neutral profile, so they don't rub on aftermarket cassettes like certain Shimano chain/aftermarket cassette combos.

That reminds me, does SRAM make a 12 speed chain that's compatible non-SRAM cassettes?

I would check out the Eagle chains

I've painted quite a few. Mainly for myself, but also some frames and helmets for friends and family. Check out my Instagram link down there ⌄⌄ for some photos if you're interested.
Frame is frame lol. They're all the same thing when it comes to painting, even material choice doesn't make much of a difference if you take the time to prep. It's not difficult, just very time consuming. I ordered mine raw and it really cuts down on prep time. There's tons of great stuff on YouTube detailing frame prep and paint techniques from people who are much better than me. If you've never painted before, buy some speed shapes or some kind of round tubes and practice first to get the technique down.
Here's a couple quick shots.

Has anyone self painted this frame? If so did you paint the storage cover as well? Assume the cover is plastic?

Thinking of doing this myself and from the frames I've seen here those with the matching cover do look good.

Working on just this right now. Frame is primed and I'll start painting sometime this week/early next week. Yes, I'm painting the plastic cover. Masking around the latch on the cover and around the opening on the frame was a bit of a puzzle, but I managed in the end. I should have some photos of the finished product in a week or two

Received my frame from Longteng in early November. Size 54 completely raw frame, everything looks quite nice. Only small issue was I paid for a headset expecting to receive some kind of full headset with top cover and compression ring, but all they sent was bearings and an unneeded crown race. I purchased this very nice Neco headset from AliExpress and it's a perfect fit. It creates a very good seal and should stop dirt and water from ingress while still using a conventional stem and bar.

Still undecided on this one, I may not build it after all. I'm growing very attached to my steel gravel rig, tire clearance issues and all. <3
I'm thinking of painting this frame and then selling it on to someone else, we'll see. Playing with some paint schemes and I'm liking this grainy, granite kinda texture for a gravel bike..what do y'all think?

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: VB 177 or VB 268
« on: December 22, 2024, 12:52:20 AM »
Ooooo that's a good catch. 177 runs a 1-1/2 fork stem. Kind of a dumb design choice. I wonder if you can run a conventional tapered fork with a thicker bearing. That's a dealbreaker for me

177 has a standard tapered fork.

Is it mandatory to use a width blade like the Park tool one or can you use a classic steel 32 tpi blade ?
A regular 32tpi blade from the hardware store has always worked for me

Question - Is the T47 inboard or outboard?

I'm still pretty undecided on a groupset. Sram eTap is much easier and cheaper to source locally. Easy to dissemble for traveling. But man I really don't like the braking performance of Sram which is kind of important for gravel. The braking modularity on Shimano's latest stuff is superb. But Di2 seems like overkill if I go 1x

T47 inboard. I'm using Rotor T47

Here's a couple more paint jobs I've done!
First one is not a road bike, but still a custom paint job.  ;D
I painted this helmet for my girlfriend. Painted with alcohol inks on a white base. Finished with regular 1k clear and wet sanded and buffed.

The bike is my old Velobuild 177. I can't quite remember, but I don't think I used any primer on this one...just scuffed up the original finish (probably 600 grit) and went to town on it.
The frame is painted with Spray.Bike Frame Builder's Copper. For the matte finish I applied a couple thin coats of matte 2k clear coat, lightly sanded to smooth everything out, then applied a final thin matte 2k coat.
The fork is painted with Montana Anthracite, finished with 2k clear and wet sanded/buffed.
The bars are The One Pro, repainted in black, finished with 2k clear and wet sanded/buffed.
My cousin now rides this bike built up with Rival XPLR. We're currently working on repainting it, updates coming soon.  ;D ;D
