This can get very expensive...
Let me explain...
I ordered a aluminium gravel frame during sales on November 29 for 202 USD. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007201451676.html
The seller did not offer prepaid-tax shipping, so I decided to order anyway and pay duties and tax when the frame was imported into my country (Belgium).
The frame arrived with customs about a month later. The courier took more than 2 weeks to do the paperwork and I had to pay 50 EUR tax and handling. That was OK.
But than the trouble began. The seller had apparently put a value of 80 USD on the document, which customs did not really believe (can't blame them). So after a couple of weeks I got a letter from customs to deliver proof of the real value of the item. This was 202 USD and I sent them my payment proof and a printscreen from the Ali order.
Today I got an email that because the seller had committed fraud, they are fining me 250 EUR (because they can't get to the seller of course) + anti-dumping tax + VAT for a total of 390 EUR. I can not refuse the frame and if I do not pay they take me to court and it will get much more expensive... They say I should try to get the money from the seller myself.
So all in all this frame is now costing me 200 + 50 + 390 = 640 EUR and a big part of that is because the seller has lied on the form.
well, frankly speaking, that is the normal way to import a bike frame..there are anti dumping tarifs applied, it depends in which european country your importing to.
The seller is only responsible to deliver the product to your border, the import is completely on your side..sure, all the sellers find ways and play tricks, and the frame reaches you without bigger add ons.
In germany, you must inform customs and pay all duties according to import laws...usually you can import 1 piece every 1 or 3 months, i do not remember correct without anti dumping tax applied...if have had this once, even being a commercial importer.
So, the seller is called being a fraud, but he did nothing wrong. You did not provide correct paper work to you forwarding carrier, so the fine should be ok....
I suppose that is the risk of direct importing and in Germany, authorities are just overwelmed by the quantities of parcels, otherwise anti dumping tax would apply more often..people just get lucky
EU is planning new costs for parcel being sent from China...so all the little orders will cost money for customs etc..
