Thanks for the links and info. Think I will go ahead and give building my own a shot. Doesn't seem to tough for the most part.

I'm a little late to the thread, but have you considered building your own?  Either way $500 should be plenty, but I got a lot of satisfaction from building my wheels.  I've gotten two sets of carbon rims from Peter, one 29" with 25 mm internal width and one 27.5" with 35 mm internal width.   Both are for my -057.  Building them up was no trouble at all, following some online calculators for getting the right spoke size and how to put them together.  If I was doing it again I think I would go with a 35 mm internal 29" rim.  The -057 frame is too narrow to fit really large tires, but a 2.4" tire on the wide rim gives great cornering and at 200 lbs I can run 18-20 psi in the rear.

On both wheelsets I used DT Revolution spokes.  No problems, even with my weight riding on lots of rocks and roots (Southeast US trails).

I used DT Swiss 350s on the 29" rims and they have been great.  For the wider 27.5" rims I decided to try XT hubs- the pair of hubs costs about the same as the front 350 hub (mine were ~$70 for the set), and they only weigh a couple of ounces more than the 350s.  The XT hubs have been great as well- they have 36 engagement points and have not given any problems, though they are due to be opened up and re-greased.

Interesting idea. Did you buy a truing stand and was it hard to do?

Been working with Peter on pricing and there seems to be a couple hundred dollar difference between the Sapim Race spokes and the CX Deltas. To me the Deltas don't seem worth the extra price, but I am not an expert. What do you guys think?

I was just looking at what Peter has to offer and the DSS-HR930C seem to fit my criteria pretty wheel. Sent him an email to see how much he is charging for those.
Thanks for your help guys.

Thanks guys. $500 should be my max budget, don't want to make the wife angry.

One last question I had on rim width. I see a pretty big difference in sizing and want to make sure I get the ones that will fit the 057 and my style the best. Typically I do your normal cross country riding, nothing extreme or to crazy. I live in Utah so my rides consist up climbing up the mountain and then riding back down. What do you guys think would work the best and what size can my frame accommodate?

Hey Guys, haven't been following the forum for awhile but I built a 057 a few years ago and opted for some pretty cheap wheels. Now I am looking to upgrade to a better set maybe even carbon if I can afford. I however am not very versed in wheels, hubs, etc, so need some advise. If you guys had $500 to spend on some new wheels what would you guys go with to outfit a 057?

Nice here in Utah to have both types of riding all in the same state. Northern Utah you won't find a ride that doesn't at least have 1,000 feet of climbing. Southern Utah, you have desert riding. When you combine the relative flat terrain with the lower altitude it feels like you can ride 3 times farther in the desert.

Bumping up this old post, but I get some input.

First, how to route the dropper post line? I use the Jagwire stuff that you stick on the frame (a 3M tape). It's cheap, works nicely, never failed. You don't have to drill your frame :). It's hard to tell that this is an added piece to the frame (on a black frame).

Second, should you use a dropper post? Agreed that a XC World champion doesn't need one. If you are not, you will benefit from it. I am a poor rider downhill and my skills have dramatically improved since I get a Reverb. I'm now a lot faster and safer. If I ever break it, I'll buy another one immediately.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen the Jagwire kit. It seems like a good solution as long as it doesn't look sloppy. I am will definitely get a dropper post but will probably wait until next year now that we are so close to the end of the season.

That post looks sweet, to bad it's over $500. Wouldn't look good having a seat post that cost more than my frame.

I dunno... I have a bike that cost twice as much as my car.  ;D

Yes I would like to have one that cost as much as my car. Unfortunately I would like to stay married to the wife.  ;)

Thx Carbon dude, but that's not really the answer I was aiming for. This looks more then an advertisement then an explanation.

can someone with experience about the FR frames give me some information. Are these frames strong and so on?

Sergio, If you are looking for a 057 I am not sure any of the FR frames are a match. Many of us here who have the 057 frame purchased them from Peter and know he offers a good frame and decent customer service. That is why Carbon Dude recommended you go through him.

Rode a Spark this weekend at a local demo and damn it felt nice. Makes me want to get a 036 as well. Trying to resist the urge but I may have a 057 up in the classifieds

I kind of wish I went with a 120mm fork on my 057 with the amount of rocky rooty trails we have here. Also would slacken out the frame a little.

No help with routing, but I run an external routed Reverb on my Santa Cruz, with it being a long travel 29er, its nice to drop the post for the downhill stuff.   I've been thinking about a dropper for the 057, because fo whatever reason I can't quite get behind the seat like I'd want.   Would love the LEV carbon 65mm travel post, but at $500, way to expensive.

Once you add one, you'll find at first you don't use it as much or drop it as far as you can.   After some use, drop it often and all the way and you'll find more downhill speed.

Going to pick up one up if I can find a good deal. They are so damn expensive for what they are.

29er / Re: Best fork offset for the IP057
« on: August 14, 2015, 12:54:45 PM »
I use a Reba with a 51mm offset on mine. From what I understand less offset makes it more twitchy. Probably just comes down to a preference thing, I would try the fork you have and see how it feels. If it feels to twitchy go to a 51 and see if it's better.
