After The Ride / Airless tires coming to cars
« on: July 18, 2015, 02:05:50 PM »
Thought this was interesting and I remember seeing a thread here a while back about mtn bike tires similar to these. Thought the idea sounded silly at the time, but who knows, maybe there's something to it:

Not sure if there would be any benefits for a mtn bike though? Road bike maybe.

Was doing some random web surfing, and came across this article:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/10427469/Caterham-launches-bike-division.html

Pretty interesting (to me, at least) bikes/motorcycles. Well, the article seems to call it a motorcycle but it has pedals and I don't see a motor so I guess it's more of an electric/pedal powered MTB? Either way, I thought you guys might find it interesting:

It's made by a company called "Caterham Bikes" and they have a couple of other pretty bad ass looking bikes as well.

This one has a fully automatic transmission:

And this one appears to be some type of electric/pedal powered cruiser bike. Not really my style but still pretty cool:

After The Ride / Xiaomi Mi4 or other direct from China smartphones?
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:57:22 PM »
Hey guys,

Thought this was slightly related to this forum: Am in the process of going through the ole phone upgrade ritual and have seen reading about the sort of chiner version of smart phones. Much in the same way these Chinese carbon manufacturers are providing the option of a lower cost, direct from China, MTB frame - A company called Xiaomi is kinda doing the same thing in the smart phone world, if I understand it correctly.

Anyways, I don't really have a point to make  ???  Looking into this made me think of this forum and I just thought it was an interesting parallel. And the phones are pretty nice, and get pretty solid reviews, and can be had for a reasonable price. If you haven't seen them:

After The Ride / Coren Carbon Urban Bike - Awesome Design
« on: November 08, 2014, 03:07:06 PM »
Came across this bike made by a company called Coren, and was impressed with the design. Not a mountain bike, but it is carbon. Wish MTBs could be this minimal and light! Really digging the belt drive and have been wanting to ride a bike with belt drive for a while, now.

Anyways, the bike:

Ok so I just had to share these vids. This girl totally rocks out some pole dancing on live TV. Not only is it skillful, but dead sexy.

So I'm prolly just going to order everything chiner that I can.. including the seatpost and handlebars. Was wondering if anyone has, or has heard of any issues with them yet? Any instances of cracking or bad tolerances?

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Favorite Carbon Finish?
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:03:02 PM »
So as I was writing my "Characteristics of carbon" post I started wondering what people's preferences are when it comes to which carbon finish to use.

Might as well start a poll to find out. Here's that thread that contains pics of all the different finishes in case you want to check them out before casting your vote http://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,173.0.html

My guess is UD matte or 3k matte wins, I could be wrong tho.

Hey guys, new to the forum and for my first post I thought I'd at least try to make it a good one. I had read somewhere on this forum where someone suggested starting a thread like this, and I thought it was a good idea, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I've done a lot of reading on these frames and carbon fiber, in general over the past few months and will attempt to layout the different kinds of carbon fiber, and a few things you need to know about each, below.

First of all, you have the outer visible layer that can be in one of three different "weaves" and all three either be matte or glossy. So you ultimately have 6 finishes to choose from. The choice is PURELY cosmetic, one is not better/stronger/lighter than another.

You have UD finish, 3k finish, and 12k finish, and like I said, glossy or matte in either of the three.

UD Matte

UD Glossy

3k Matte (my personal fav)

3k Glossy

12k Matte

12k Glossy

Will continue in next post with different characteristics of the actual carbon fiber that lies below these outer cosmetic layers. There are a few different kinds and variables, and unlike the weave selection, they do vary in strength/durability.
