29+ & 27+ / 27.5+ Hardtail Frames
« on: May 31, 2018, 10:41:47 AM »
I'm trying to get my head around what frames will fit 27.5+ plus tires. I don't have any interest in 29+... been there, too much inertia for my tight trails.

I would be happy with a frame that can fit a 2.8, so maybe some 29er frames will work?

Here's my list so far:

1) FM-M796+
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/T800-mtb-carbon-frame-27-5er-mountain-bicycle-27-5-inch-plus-thru-axle-frame-FM/32804199504.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.pMQ2kT

Steep head angle, only two sizes, BB92, Boost or 142mm rear

2) CS-496 (the e-stay bike)
http://www.carbonspeedbikes.com/shop/mountain/cs-496-27-529-plus-frameset/

Modern head angle, but not enough stack for my taste, bottom bracket may be a bit low with B+ tires, BB92

3) CS-496 copy (another e-stay bike)
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Toray-800-carbon-fiber-MTB-27-5er-frame-new-thru-axle-carbon-fiber-650B-plus-frame/32824016630.html

PF30, Boost, 27.5+, but more head tube length than the CS-496

4) FM-299
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/27-5er-650B-PLUS-Boost-Super-Light-Carbon-MTB-Frame-Bicycle-Frame-FM299-148-12MM-MAX/32839565262.html

This is the frame with the dropped right chainstay.
BB92, 71 HA, 21" size available but no geo listed.

5) FM-476
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/27-er-Boost-full-carbon-bicycle-frame-carbon-mtb-frame-27-5-plus-carbon-650b-mountain/32775531818.html

BB92, says QR or thru axle, but I'm guessing it's boost. This one actually looks pretty good, 21" size available, 69.5 head angle.

I'm sure there's more out there, what else have you seen?

Sales & Classifieds / Sette Razzo carbon 29er frame
« on: February 14, 2015, 04:00:42 PM »
Sette Razzo SC, carbon fiber 29er frame, size 21" or XL. Includes seat collar and an FSA headset. This is a super smooth riding carbon frame, but not dead feeling at all. It has a really nice balance of stiffness and responsiveness. It can clear an honest 2.4" tire in the rear. The Razzo features full internal cable routing, tapered head tube, and a normal threaded bottom bracket. It's in good shape--what may look like scratches in the pictures is actually wrinkles or scuffs in the protective tape that the original owner applied.

SOLD

Sales & Classifieds / FS IP-106 frame and fork
« on: September 27, 2014, 05:46:51 AM »
IP-106, size 20", UD matte finish, in like new condition. Fits a BSA (standard threaded) bottom bracket and a 10mm normal QR rear axle. Includes a tapered headset with an additional adapter plate to fit a normal 1-1/8" fork. Also includes a spare derailer hanger.

Includes the FK-029 fork: full carbon fork with carbon steerer, clearance for a 3" tire, post mount disc brakes, 9mm normal QR. The steerer tube is cut to about 230mm, long enough to have the usual maximum of 50mm spacers below the stem.

This is a nice, modern XC frame. The rear end is shorter (440mm), so it's maneuverable and easy to pick up the front wheel. Tire clearance is generous enough to run a 2.3" tire in the rear and a 3" tire up front.

New, this whole package would cost about $670, I'm offering it for $450 shipped.

Component Deals & Selection / Stems and carbon steerer
« on: August 17, 2014, 08:01:11 AM »
Planning my next build, I see Dimension doesn't recommend their stems for carbon steerers. Unfortunately, most of the stems in my inventory (stemvintory?) are Dimension, since they're relatively cheap and work fine. Does anyone know why they wouldn't recommend this?

When I compare my Dimension stems' clamp area to other stems (Salsa, Race Face, FSA, Easton), I really can't see or feel any difference.

29er / IP-106 on the way
« on: August 16, 2014, 01:13:04 PM »
Hello all,

This is my first post here, though I've been following these carbon frames for a while. I'm the guy that organized a lot of the hardtail 29er info in my blog post. Check it out here:

http://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2013/11/chinese-carbon-bike-frames.html

After that post, I ended up with a Krampus, though I found it to be too heavy and pokey for much enjoyment. I then bought a Sette Razzo carbon frame off ebay. I was pretty sure I wouldn't like carbon fiber: I'm a steel guy at heart, and I've had mixed feelings about the two carbon frames I'd demo'd previously (older Gary Fisher Superfly was stiff and dead feeling, newer Trek Superfly was nice http://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2013/11/trek-factory-demo-niner-and-gryphon-sold.htmlenough, but $4000!), so I didn't want to invest a lot into a CF frame.

Somewhat to my surprise, I found I enjoyed the Razzo quite a bit:

It was light and smooth, but still responsive to my pedaling efforts. A nice combination.

But...

Ideally, I would like the top tube to be a bit shorter, as well as the chainstays, I wouldn't mind more standover, and I'd like to run it with a carbon fork and a big fat tire up front.

So, I just sent dough off to Peter for an 20" IP-106 with a matching fork. I figure I'll build it up 1x9 with a Knard up front and my Mission 2.4 on the back. I think that will fit.

Stay tuned.
