Metal Frames / Re: Custom Waltly Titanium 29er
« on: March 22, 2023, 08:57:37 AM »
There’s a local machine shop that I’m sure would be able to fix it. I’d want to add a bridge behind the seat tube to help stiffen that area up. I think if the crack is welded and nothing else is done, it will just crack again. For now I’m going to hang it on the shop wall of shame. I’ve ordered a carbon frame from Spcycle that will be its replacement.

3 years and 500 miles later, the frame is retired. Not overly happy about this as I was really happy with the geometry and ride. It developed a seatpost creak within the first 150 miles or so. The hole is a bit bigger than it probably should be as the seat post will slide down on its own if the clamp isn’t tight. I’ve tried shimming the post with aluminum and teflon, but nothing would prevent the creak from coming back. Not sure which came first, the creak or the crack.

I haven’t contacted Waltly yet as I’m sure there’s no warranty at this point.

Updated the original post to include the shipping timeline.

The frames have finally shipped. It's only been two weeks and they had to get them painted so I'm happy with that. Another nice surprise is that the $196 usd I spent on shipping was actually for FedEx shipping instead of EMS like most of the companies. In the past, FedEx shipments from China have been much quicker than EMS.

29er / Spcycle M016 hardtail frame builds
« on: February 26, 2023, 11:44:42 AM »
I’ve got a couple builds to do this spring and decided on some Spcycle M016 frames. The top tube measurement seems a bit short but the stack and reach numbers look acceptable. The 67° head angle and the <440mm chainstay length should be a good mix for what I’m looking for.

Frame 1 is for me and is a 19” large in gloss pearl white. This will be replacing a Waltly titanium frame that I can’t get the seat post to stop creaking on. It’s unfortunate as I absolutely love the frame but I just can’t get past the creaking. It will be built up as a single speed and I hope to get it under 20 pounds. SRAM X0 cranks, Hulk bike rims with 27mm inner width, 350 hubs, Divine SL dropper, XTR Race brakes, and a Pike Ultimate will start the build. Depending on ride and final weight, I might for a SID Ultimate.

Frame 2 is for my daughter. It’s a 17” medium frame that’s painted matte black and matte pink. This will have a 2017 RS Revelation RLC fork set at 120mm and an 11 speed drivetrain that’s a mix of SLX and Deore. She grew out of her current 27.5 small frame so I’ll be taking most of the parts from that minus the obvious 29” wheel specific items.

I ordered the frames on February 19th and was told the frames would be painted on the 21st. So far, no more updates. To be honest though, I haven’t asked for any. I’ll update the thread as things move along.

Purchase / shipping timeline:
19 February - Ordered two painted frames
3 March - received tracking number
7 March - FedEx received the package and frames are in transit.
10 March - Frames delivered

That didn’t take long, two frames were ordered today, February 19th. One 19” frame painted in gloss pearl white and a 17” frame in matte black and matte pink. So far communication has been quick and helpful. I’ll keep the thread updated as things progress.

Nicely done with the repair. With a little patience, carbon is relatively easy to work with. Just can’t rush the process. Also much easier and cheaper to learn than welding.

Any more thoughts on this frame? Looking at getting two, one for my daughter and one for myself.

All of the carbon frames I’ve had have been black. Thinking of going gloss white with a blue pearl or metallic finish.

Enter! Glad to see these giveaways are back on.

Thanks

Have you tried running a 31.6 to 30.9 plastic shim (AliExpress) and run a 30.9 dropper, might get rid of it and save the frame.

I haven't. But a plastic shim just might work. I'll definitely give that a try before giving up. Thanks.

Ideally, I'd like to see 31.65mm for the bore. I'll have to take some actual measurements to confirm.

A beer can shim fits about when wrapped about 330 degrees around the BikeYoke dropper post. When I tried the bontrager fixed post, I had to trim the shim to only wrap about 180 degrees around the post before it would fit. So the BikeYoke post is definitely a bit smaller than others which doesn't help. Either way, all 3 posts that I've tried will fall into the hole with just gravity.

Keep us posted on what they do for you. I'm debating about getting another one built and might just stick with 30.9.

I have two Waltly frames.

I ordered a gravel frame in 2021 and it's been perfect with only one minor complaint and it was self induced. If I was to order another one, I'd add 15mm to the head tube height. But that's on me for not knowing exactly what I was looking for as this was my first drop bar bike.

In 2020, I ordered a hardtail mountain bike frame to run as a single speed. This one is having an ongoing issue that's about to get the frame thrown in the dumpster. When I went through the details with Amy, I asked for a 31.6 seatpost. Most seat tubes are bit oversized to allow the post to fit correctly. Generally, .1mm or less. On the drawing, they had it listed as a 31.75mm bore. I asked if it could be 31.65mm and I was assured that this is how they do all of their 31.6mm frames. I've tried multiple seatposts with and without beer can shims and I still can't get rid of the creaking. Any change I make to clamp torque or seat height will help but it's only temporary. By the time I get done a 2 hour ride, it's back and extremely annoying. Now circling back to my gravel frame, I ordered it with a 30.9 post and it's been silent. No bore was listed on the drawing but the post is not nearly as sloppy as it is in my single speed frame.

I just realized your profile pic is the classic Sugarloaf Outdoor Center pond shot, nice to see a fellow New Englander here. I build my mountain bikes first and foremost to ride in Carrabassett and Bethel!

Yes it is. Such a great place to ride. I used to be up there at least a couple times a month, not so much in the last few years. The amount of cars at the OC on any given Saturday is drastically different than it was 10 years ago.

North West of Italy, just next to the Alps :)

Welcome, and nice view!

I'll be in Cannobio for a week in October. Any good spots to rent a bike and take a ride on dirt? Plan on exploring the mountains and hiking but pedaling some would be nice.

Yup. The biggest concern is rear derailleur/ shifter combo. Since those another 12 spd Shimano, you’re all set. Most of my bikes have Shimano shifter and rear derailleur with SRAM cranks and cassettes.
