29er / Re: 120mm travel fork on a 90mm carbon 29er frame
« on: February 23, 2017, 11:08:22 AM »
When I was geeking out on cranksets and comparing price vs weight, I found that I could get a carbon SRAM crankset for the same price as a RF Turbine but the weight was 100g lighter. The RF Next is another 100g lighter than the SRAM but also $200+ more.  Now I have too many bikes with GXP cranksets to change now.

I have done the air shaft swap a couple of times on some Pikes,  and yes it's relatively straightforward.  My local bike shop has given me some amazing prices lately so this time I just let them do it.

Yes they are. I'm a big fan of the Sram GXP cranksets. The carbon ones aren't as light as the RF Next cranksets but they can be found for almost half the price.

I finally got the SID bumped up to 120mm but I'm currently buried in snow so I won't be trying it out anytime soon.

That's awesome! And that's why my trips lately have been to Europe rather than staying in the US.

Yes it Oracal 651 vinyl sheets. My sister in law has an embroidery / screen printing shop and she recommended that vinyl. I just had to figure out how to use her program and the plotter for the words. The rest is just done with a paper punch that can be bought at any craft store or on Amazon. There is better vinyl out there (Oracal 751 and 951) but this is supposedly the best bang for the buck for a 2 to 3 year use. The 751 will last longer as vehicle wraps but since it's on a bike that will be out grown in a couple of years and is stored inside, I went with the 651 as it's less than half the cost.

The handlebars finally arrived and we got them mounted and all adjusted. The fit and finish of the frame is excellent and so isn't  the customer service of Tideace. 24" wheels would definitely help a bit but once she is on the bike, it fits great. The 26" wheels just makes it a little tall but she should do just fine. The crank arms at 150mm seem like a good fit too.

For the name, her favorite ski trail at Sugarloaf is White Nitro, and since she has been skiing it, she has been calling herself "White Nitro Girl". So I had to add a little personal touch.

Here are some final pictures.

So when can my wife and I come visit you from the states?  We need to get away from the recent US politics!

Count us in too! Both the politics and hate are getting out of control. We are taking the kids to Stechelberg Switzerland this July and it would be nice if we didn't have to go back.

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Re: Please help me decide !

Yes there is some truth behind it. But in my opinion, it is also very skewed to the one side.

I currently have 3 frames, 2 forks, 1 flat handlebar, and 3 sets of rims in my house. All have been trouble free. With the frames, the finishing touches aren't as nice as on the name brand bikes but they are far from bad. I had to finish sanding down a resin bump on one integrated headset race and on one rear drop out. I also had to remove a resin bump in the chainstay of my plus bike. If I had no mechanical ability what so ever and I needed someone else to build the bike, I would definitely stay away. But that isn't the case and I have been lucky to be able to fix whatever little nuances that have come up. This does not mean that they are bad, just that they aren't as "nice". In the article they are talking about counterfeit frames. Not all of them are intended to be that way. Most are factory "samples" that are made to showcase a product or ability to bike companies. I personally wouldn't buy a "counterfeit" frame but I have no issues at all buying a generic one. But I also eat store brand cereal if that says anything.

I like the brakes a lot. Between all the bikes at my house, I have the new XTR M9020 and 9000's, SLX M675's, XT M785's and M8000's, and the Deore M615's. Other than the feel of the dimpled lever, the only noticeable difference while riding is the XTR Race as they don't have the servo wave feature. All the others perform equally well. I was thinking of going with the M396 brakes but I wanted to keep all bikes sharing the same type of brake pad and bleeding procedure.

Anyway, here is a picture of the maiden voyage. Still waiting on the handlebars but everything else is complete. Final weight is 21.4 pounds as pictured.

I have this one and have had good luck with it. It's the same height as a 110mm 26er suspension fork. But yes it is a 29er fork.

Done! Good luck to her.

I feel your pain. My 8 year old is officially better than me when it comes to downhill skiing now.

The brakes finally arrived. They were ordered on Nov 11th on AliExpress and arrived on Dec 31st. I did give the bike to her for Christmas, just with out brakes. We installed them last night and threw it on the scale. 21.8 pounds with the RF Chester pedals. I would definitely like to see it under 20lbs but it will most likely stay where it is. She super excited to try it out but it will have to wait.

So the Reba is relatively new then. That makes it easy. You just need a new airshaft and they run about $30. It should be about $50 in labor including an oil and seal change from a decent shop. Nashbar has a nice house brand carbon post for under $50. I have two of them and I prefer it's clamp better than the Chiner ones.
