29er / Re: FR-202 Race Rig
« on: June 19, 2015, 07:41:22 AM »
Thanks MTB2223!!

Here we go, you can't see too much the bike, I know I was really posing here (that was within the first hour of the race :) )
I have set the fork at 110 mm (you can't tell here as it is compressed a lot) and the Reverb seatpost is down.
I'll need to take some picture myself, so that you can get a better view on the bike.

blee_2009, we won't ride together, I am in France. I visit regularly Missouri (not too far) but I don't fly my bike.

OK, I need to make some good quality pictures (and find a way to post them here!).

For the tire clearance, I run 2.25 and that's the max that my front derailleur will allow. If you go with a single chainring, then I agree that 2.4 is probably the max.

This bike is SO close to mine!! I'll need to post a picture, you'll be amazed. Same frame (3K glossy), ZTR Crest rims, XT cranks, white fork (RS Reba).
Still, a lot of differences, Reverb seat-post, Avid brakes, 2x9 X9/X0 group (except cranks).

My bike is 18 month old now, also just done an 8 hours race. I was passing many people going up... but 3x more people passing me downhill :( everyone's moving to Full now, which really makes a difference downhill.

Which rear tire do you finally run? This 2.35 NN is a no-go to me, way to close to the frame.

That's good info... Glue for PS foam. I really care less for the crack now then for the fact that they don't allow their frames to set (at room temp or accelerated in a oven). It sounds like an expedited manufacturing process to me. Maybe w/o any consequence, maybe not. For sure I don't like it.
Changing the frame won't fix it if that's their standard process.

Don't know if sellers are not knowledgeable or if it's just a communication problem... I'd also be very interested with a real enduro carbon frame. Yes, 160 mm travel, strong, light. But I would not compromise on the geometry. It's difficult to mess with a hard tail geometry but with an enduro you really need to know what you're doing (and validate it through a test, which I doubt they do).

Component Deals & Selection / Re: 29er Rim Question
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:44:31 AM »
I'd like to ask a question related to this (old) post.

What is the real benefit of those Chinese Carbon rims? When I built my MTB I looked at the offering and couldn't find any major reason to go for it. I use Stan's aluminum rims, they are cheap, light and strong.
I'd appreciate if someone could explain me what I am missing here.

Thanks!

Please keep us updated with the response from iPlay. I am really curious (and concerned). Again, I have cut a tube (chiner fork carbon steerer) and there was nothing like that. Also I have hit the frame all through the lacquer, down to the carbon and there was nothing like that.

... but that's crazy wide, I would probably never buy that on my own.

Grenoble, France

Not too many people from here! Well, I've never seen anyone with a Chiner around

I think you should make your decision on the frame you want independently from the sales channel. I bought 2 frames from FlyXII (the first one from Ebay, the second one direct - which enabled me to negotiate a discount) and everything has been perfect (solid packaging, 10 days delivery to France, good quality). I'd say, they only thing you absolutely need to do is to pay with Paypal, which offers guaranty. Other then that it doesn't matter if you buy through Amazon or direct to Peter or any other known vendor.

Am I the only one who is more concerned by the white fluid coming out of the frame then by the crack itself? This doesn't sound right to me. I have already cut carbon tubes and it's plain hard, no softness or liquid swelling out of the material.

Hi Everyone, after a long time reading weekly this forum I finally register!
I am a French mountain biker (in the Alps), more All-Mountain then XC. I still like to hit the road and just enjoy slow rides with my family.

I have 2 complete bikes to my record. My 29er hard tail FR-202 from FlyXII (what a weird name...) and a full rigid for my wife, a 27.5er w/o any specific ref. number, from the other website owned by FlyXII, "X-Goods".
My 29er is "convertible" to road bike when I swap wheels, fork (for a rigid carbon), replace the reverb seatpost with a carbon one and replace the ring spacers with a 44 ring.

Weights:
29er MTB = 10.3 kg
29er road setup = 8.4 kg
27.5 MTB = 9.2 kg

Happy man, happy wife :)
