Just looked at the link.  Hmmm  Mat tire 3.0"....  What if you have Glossy tires as apposed to Mat?   :)

29er / Another 29 AM bike has shown up.
« on: December 07, 2018, 10:08:05 AM »
Now that I live in north Georgia, an enduro/trail class bike has been on my wishlist.  I even took the time to demo several bikes including the new Trek Fuel (130mm travel F&R), Yeti SB 130 (150F 130R), Pivot Switchblade (150F 135R), and Santa Cruz Hightower (140F 135R).

My favorites have been the Pivot and Yeti, the Pivot being a little heavier, but worked better for me... These are "point and descend" bikes meaning point it downhill and hang on, the bike will do the work.  I've hit 32 mph once on my hardtail on P2 trail which was super sketchy and at about the edge of that bikes's capabilities.  On the Pivot, I hit 43 and only got on the brakes because with the trees going by so fast and steep ledges to fall off, 1 mistake could be catastrophic.  However, at that ridiculous speed on P2, not once did I ever feel the bike was even close to threshold. That thing ate up all the rough trail sections and railed corners hard... What an experience and now I know why people get addicted to descending on a worthy bike!

So on MTBR.com I stumbled across TanTan's website and found this:
http://www.tantancycling.com/index.php?_m=mod_product&_a=view&p_id=689

Initially, looking at the linkage, it would appear to have good swing characteristics, similar Pivot and Santa Cruz.  Geometry looks pretty good except for the chain-stay length.  Not sure having a rear tire trailing in another zipcode would do much good, especially on climbing (and I do a lot of that).

So, I am curious on a few opinions from others who know more about geometry for Enduro bikes. What would be one's opinion as to how this bike would ride?

I had been using his foxmail.  Strange.  I'll try hitting him up again.

I can't speak for Alibaba, but I don know Peter Xu from CarbonSpeed is a real individual.  I was supposed to meet him last year at interbike, but I couldn't make it.  Someone I know was there and took a pic of his booth and he was there.

Hey Everyone,

I have been trying to reach Peter for a few weeks. We messaged briefly about 3 weeks ago, but I haven't heard back and I need to get a frame shipped and a few other things.

Maybe it's a Chinese New Year or some other holiday of the sort going on right now?

OK, maybe I missed something, but did you post pics of the bike built?  I didn't see any in the thread, but would really like to.

Also, regarding carbon components on AliExpress:

Your handlebar - looks good by the seller's pic. Can you tell me how thick the walls are?

Seatpost - This reminds me of he ASIACOM stuff.  NEVER BUY ASIACOM BRANDED COMPONENTS!  That stuff is junk and very dangerous!  I broke a seat post by them in 1 day. So, I got wise and when I check the handlebar, I found stress cracks.

What I have found that worked for me is Tideace brand bars and seat post which have held up for the past year.  I've had a few nasty crashes, and thinking I may replace the bar, so that's why I am curious about yours.  Rather replace and have piece of mind.

My Seat post: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Tideace-carbon-bicycle-seatpost-MTB-road-mountain-bike-seat-post-seat-tube-glossy-matte-carbon-bicycle/32800640505.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dik4raZ

Saddle - Let me know how this turns out.  I have bought a few from AliExpress.  Anything I've bought with carbon rails seems to fail fairly quickly.  I have usually been able to find the Selle SMP style saddle with titanium rails for a few dollars more.  I just broke on of those (the rail) this week, but it's been on my bike for 5100 miles and I ride a hard tail where I should be on a long travel FS.  So sometimes I've hit the saddle pretty hard.

Good thing, I had a spare saddle.  But when I looked on Aliexpress, I couldn't find the SMP style anymore.  Maybe there was a trademark crack down.  I ordered something similar, but doesn't have the bent down nose... Kinda worried I might get a beak up the but if I'm not careful.  This is the one I ordered.  I've found that cradle shaped work good for me and I don't need any padding on the seat itself.

Fat Bikes / Re: My 197 build
« on: July 05, 2018, 10:24:50 AM »
I had a feeling fat bikes could be built in the low 20's.  Question, are you Jumbo Jims the SnakeSkin or LightSkin carcas?  I have been doing some research on fats as I am thinking about his as a next bike.  Seems the Jumbo has the best rolling/weight/traction ratios I could find.  Are you able to confirm this?

24
Yes, this is more of what I am looking for.  Also, it seems Peter has a CS-S065 that also falls into the trail category.  These 3 give me some things to ponder.  In a perfect world, I'd build the P9 full enduro class and probably the S065 for trail. But once I get my finances straight, I may have to step into this differently.

Good thing is, Trail/AM/Enduro frames are finally starting to show up.

Hey Peter,

Is this the bike that will also run a 29x2.35 tire?

26
Nope, but I'll make a switchback over to another browser tab and start looking :-)

27
I've been combing around to see what's out there, but the 821 seems to be the only one with even close to a trail spec as far as suspension goes.  I'd really like to find something in the 130mm to 140mm travel of possible before I just completely destroy my MB01.  Granted it's held up great, but I'm pushing it at it's limits now since I live where there are hills and mountains.  I need something beyond XC class.

Suggestions?

Squashman, I just replied to your PM. But for other readers, I would say it's a matter of personal preference.  I have been experimenting with wider rims which spreads the tires out a bit more and aids in contact to the ground.  Also the sidewalls become a bit more vertical and it makes them more rigid. I can run a little lower pressure... Only a pound or 2, but I am able to maintain low rolling resistance as if I had higher pressure.  Generally, a wider carbon rim with a narrower tire will weigh in a few grams less. Not much and it's very dependent on the tire carcass design, but it's rotational weight which is expensive to the rider.

Depending on he rider's size, I would go no smaller than 30mm and if running a 2.35, try a 2.25 as an example.  a 36-40mm would allow for a 2.1 and you would still have a very similar contact patch.  Circumference and cushion from the tire reduces a little, but you will get considerably more contact patch with the wider rim.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Tubeless-Ready vs regular rims.

Yeah, he is right.  Definitely go with TR tires if you can.  With good sealant, the non TR tires will most likely seal up, but sometimes the sidewalls weep fluid.

Also, if you burp a wire bead tire, there is little chance of recovering on the trail unless you have a CO2 cartridge with you.  The wire bead pulls off the shoulder and doesn't flex back as well.  I found that out too.

Actually, Schwalbe just release their new ADDIX compound tires, so a lot of places are selling the Pacestar compound ones really cheap.  I picked up 2 Racing Ralphs for $33 each.  They were SnakeSkin carcass and Tubeless-Ready.

I have about 1800 miles on the DEKAS.  I switched them from the SNAILS last February.  I've ridden 2500 miles since Jan 1st by what Strava says, so I am guessing at that number, but it's gotta be close.
