Finally had to replace the chain on my-057, and I got a new cassette as well.  I thought about going to 1X, but didn't want to replace everything else so I went with a straight replacement of what I had before, XT cassette and chain (HG whatever it is) to try to keep it simple.  Well not so simple- the chain skips.  Just about everything I've read says that worn chainrings are not as likely to cause skipping, but I can't see what else the problem might be.  Anybody else have this problem when replacing drivetrain parts?

I guess I should have just gone to 1X11. >:(

That stinks, but EVERYTHING shuts down for Chinese New Year.

Well, everything that involves selling stuff to the West.

I can still beat my son on the bike, but part of that is because he has a crappy bike.  His next one will probably be a Chiner, so I may be in trouble.  On foot he's been faster than me for a few years- we did a 5k and I told him not to worry, I would stay with him.  He beat me by about 3 minutes.

Voted, but not sure how I feel about being slower than a 12 year old girl :)

Definitely can do it, there's another thread about making a Workswell 062 (very similar frame) more "trail".  Get some wide carbon rims (~30 mm internal width) and 2.4 tires (the fattest that will fit) for the rear, and get the fattest tire that will fit in your fork.  With a dropper that's about all you can do, but that bike would handle any trail I'd be comfortable riding at speed.

I've never sold a bike, but that's a good way to look at it.  If you lose 100% resale on the Chiner frame, you're still ahead after buying another Chiner frame :)

Trails in the Atlanta area are similar to the trails at the Whitewater Center in Charlotte- lots of short steep climbs, some tight and twisty routes, some trails have lots of rocks and roots while some are quite smooth.  Several also have the 'chopped up' feel from trying to cram in as much trail as possible.  The benefit is that you don't have to walk as far back to the parking lot if something goes wrong :).  FATS seems a bit like the North GA or Western NC trails with less vertical- you actually feel like you are going somewhere.

Do it- a TrailKing 2.4" is one of the biggest you can fit on the rear, but depending on the fork and your rim width you may be able to get a larger one on the front.  Measure your clearance and look for bead to bead measurements on the tires to have a better idea of what will fit.  The spreadsheet from craigsj in this thread http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/bead-bead-mtb-tire-measurement-959767.html has some info; I thought there was an updated version but can't find it now.

I tried converting my -057 to 27.5+, but with 35 mm internal rims the 2.8" tires were too big in the rear.  I currently have a 27.5 Nobby Nic 2.8"in the front but had to drop back to a 27.5 TrailKing 2.4 on the rear.  At 18 psi (I'm 200 lbs) the rear rides great, but I have felt it bottom out.  When my current 29er tires wear out I'll get 2.4's to put on those rims- when mounted they will be a few mm narrower than the 2.8 NN, but still wider than the X-King and weight weenie Schwalbe tires I've had on before.

I might try it on the rear brake first :)

Thanks for sharing all the pics and reports on your conversion!

After The Ride / Re: One more reason to buy a bike stand

My first "stand" was like that- an old brake cable from my road bike, hung from the garage door opener with a loop covered by vinyl tubing on the other end to hang the bike by the saddle.  I let the front wheel rest on the floor, so it didn't swing too much.

Kid's science projects.  Even if you don't have kids, you can use this as a justification for buying one.

Yes, I keep a pack of them in my Camelback.  One of the other guys in the group is apparently much more organized than me though- as I was fumbling through the contents trying to remember where I put them, he hands me his chain tool and a link.  It was near the end of the ride so I considered walking, but it would have been mostly uphill (no coasting).

Bit of an update- no real changes to the bike (since the two sets of carbon wheels- been a long time since this was updated!), but I snapped my chain last night.  It was still the original one, 2.5 years old though I have no idea how many miles it had on it.  I was doing a night ride with a local group, and was leading when I went off the trail on a sweeping curve.  Everything is covered in loose leaves so it's hard enough to follow the trail in daylight :)  No danger of crashing, I just followed the wrong line.  Grabbed the brakes hard then tried to get back on the trail, but stalled out and wound up with all my weight on one pedal at a dead stop.  Then Snap!  My eggbeater popped out immediately and I would up just standing there.  The worst part was that everyone got cold waiting on me to fix it- it was about 45°F/7°C at the time.  Hopefully the rest of the drivetrain is not too worn and the new chain won't skip.  If it does, I guess it is time to go to a 1X.

I have an -056/-057, also from iPlay.  I've ridden it now for 2 years on rough trails- rocks, roots, erosion.  I have a 100 mm RockShox SID fork that regularly uses the full travel and occasionally bottoms out.  I don't do any big drops, and I am not the hardest rider but I am not taking it easy either.  I weigh 205 lbs/93 kg.  I've had no issue with the frame, and I don't worry that it will snap unless I hit something that will also probably break me.

I've never ridden a carbon fork on a MTB, so can't really comment other than to say that the suspension fork would give me reassurance that it will be less likely to snap when I bottom out on the granite. (or at least it will absorb more energy before folding up :) )  For regularly bashing through stuff at high speed, I would also go with front suspension at least.
