I received the same email, not knowing if he couldn't just do a search, and me not knowing much about FatBike wheels, I did a quick search and sent him back some info.  To my surprise, there are already several carbon fat bike wheels on the market.

Below is my reply.

Also, I would suggest ordering a set of wheels you like from one of these places to get more specs.

Well now that you bring up the ip 036 I'd say spend the few extra hundred bucks and go for the full suspension.  I was a hard tail guy forever.  loving the lightweight and efficiency of the platform BUT then I rode a good full suspension and fell in love.  They are just so much easier on the body.  They help you maintain traction and control.  And now that they are so light with carbon I think they are well worth the extra cost.  Especially with the reasonable pricing on the Chinese frames.  Just food for thought.
Andy

I have only a few rides on my IP-036 but it's also a really good bike but did end up costing me more for the frame and rear shock, seems to do a really good job of keeping the rear in contact with the ground and under control.

If you are going with one bike as an all-arounder, I would lean toward a FS --- I went with 057...happy with it....but, not going to have a stable of bikes a FS with lockouts would do overall.
If one knows what their goal in riding is:  XC riding for example get the 057(or similar) and build as nice a bike as budget allows.
I know I went in thinking I could build a nicer bike, with nicer parts, for cheaper.  Well, I got into it and went over budget.

I agree with you in that if I had only one bike, and rode mostly XC single track, a FM-057 hardtail is a great choice.  The way the carbon smooths out the ride over my AL frame bike is simply amazing.  With less fatigue and a lighter weight bike also comes more speed, which is why I'm even faster on my carbon bike than I ever was on my old Aluminium bikes, hardtail or full suspension.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: XMIplay 650B Carbon Hard Tail

I will say that after a thorough demo ride of the Giant XTC 27.5 XC bike, I see no reason for me to every want a 26er ever again.

You already have some of the trickle down technology with the clutched rear derailleur and the wide/narrow chainrings, and 42T cogs that people are making for 10-sod cassettes.  When XX1 came out, it was very unique, now it doesn't have as much of an advantage with those technologies now available other ways.

Nice seat post, however, doesn't do anything for me when I'm standing up and flying down a rough section of trail :).

since the 29er is too big and  the 26 is too small, the 650b is the excellent choice! :)

Everyone has their own opinion but for my size (6'-0" 190lbs) for me 27.5 is still a bit small, 29" fits me well.

I rode an Origin 8 Fat Bike the other day.  Really liked it because it was something different.  Although I don't know how well a Fat Bike will climb hills that I ride.  Seems like a fun bike but would tire you out quickly compared to a nice light carbon hardtail 29er.

Component Deals & Selection / SRAM XX1 1x11 Discussion
« on: April 15, 2014, 08:06:01 PM »
Huge fan of XX1 here.  For years all I rode was Shimano XT/XTR drivetrain components.  Never thought much of SRAM prior to moving to the new 1x11.  I was happy with my 3x9 setups until I determined I only really needed one chainring for XC riding in my area.  Then XX1 came along and I was totally sold on it when I saw it at the Southern Bike Expo.

The wide/narrow tooth, no drop chain ring, the 11-42 rear cassette mostly machined from a billet of steel, the true parallelagram rear derailleur, and choice of grip shifter or trigger shifter impressed me they way they all worked together.

Who else likes their XX1 setup?

Updated first post with general build order.  In preparation for doing a more detailed build instruction aimed at someone who has never built a bike before.

If I were to build a 650b, it would be the XMIplay IP-136.  I rode a Giant XTC 27.5 a few weeks back and I think 26er's are pretty much old school now.  I just finished a FS 29er but maybe next year I will think about building something smaller.  This frame looks to be a smaller version of their IP-057 which has been a popular seller.

The package will be handed off to USPS, you can track it there once it gets to the US.

I know what you mean about the Easton Carbon, they make nice looking stuff.

If I owned a bike shop you better believe I'd have a Chinese Carbon HT and FS bike on the sales floor with my company name on the frame.  I"d offer a decent warranty and of course free tune-ups. However, I would bet the big name brands would not be happy seeing their product compete against an IP-057 & Ip-036 and would want to pull their brand out of the dealership.

Andy, it's interesting to me that you work in a bike shop.  While I was shopping around deciding what FS bike I wanted, I looked seriously at the Specialized EPIC Expert Carbon but I could not see $7k for a new bike that didn't have the XT brakes, carbon bars, or carbon seat post.  To be equivalent to my IP-036 build I would need to spend another $500 and I would have paid tax on the EPIC so I'd be in for $8k.  I built the IP-036 for half that.  Granted I don't have a Brain shock front and rear but the last review from Bike Magazine was not all that favorable and they decided the bike worked best with the rear suspension locked out the whole ride.

Admittedly the big name brands do have high quality frames, probably use better bearings in the pivots, nice paint jobs with lots of  graphics with letters and numbers but they don't ride twice as good.  8)
