29+ & 27+ / Power of the Forum to find Frame info???? 27.5+ FS
« on: May 12, 2016, 11:31:10 PM »
I'm trying to convince my father that he needs to replace is 20+ year old Pro-Flex for a modern bike.  He doesn't want to spend the kind of money that a new Main Stream bike is, frankly I'm not sure he wants to spend what a China bike would cost, but I'm trying to convince him.  As you know I already built up a full rigid 057, so I'm no stranger to the Carbon build a bike deal, but I did a TON of research before that frame choice, but now I just don't have the time to do that much web surfing soooo...

I'm hoping the community can help narrow some choices down.  In this thread I'm hoping to get info on 27.5+ Full Squish Frame options, I'm going to repost in regular 27.5 for those options also.

CS-M04  http://xmcarbonspeed.com/Productinfo.asp?f=1438, which I'm not sure what it's based on.

After The Ride / Where to ride in South Tucson??
« on: January 10, 2016, 02:41:51 PM »
I'm heading to Safford, AZ for a couple days of work next week.  I'm planning to bring a bike with me in case I have time on my way there or back, or in the evenings.

I'll be driving through South Tucson on my way, so the question is, where should I stop for a ride??  I probably won't have time for an Epic, but something 1-2 hours, 8-15 miles depending on terrain.

Then the question of which bike??  Chiner 057 or Santa Cruz Tallboy LT???

And how about near Safford that I can ride at night?

After The Ride / Recent Race Video
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:20:43 AM »
Yesterday I raced in the Quick 'n Dirty MTB Race Series Dirty 30. I ran the beginner Male class, which meant I was only doing 1 lap, vs 3 that the Experts including TInker Juarez were doing.
Here's my video, my full lap was 53 minutes, this is condensed down to 16 minutes.

After The Ride / Maintenance Reminder
« on: August 13, 2015, 07:40:43 PM »
Remember to check your brake pads.  Unlike in the old days with rim brakes your disc pads aren't easily visible.

I bring this up because on a recent ride I just touched metal on my rears about 1/2 way through my ride.  While I was able to ride back with no issues, it made for a much slower pace.

Don't mind the damage in the middle, that was from the screwdriver spreading the pads to push the pistons back in.

Also remember to top of your tire sealant if your running tubeless.  I was do for a new tire anyway, but wanted to get 30 more miles.  I changed it now because it wasn't holding air overnight anymore, so decided to change the tire instead of adding more sealant.

Inside of tire using Orange Seal

I pealed out the old stuff for the hell of it and it pretty much came out in one giant piece.  But it was in there good.

Gratuitous used vs new tire pictures.

While I was at it, I pulled the chain for a thorough Solvent cleaning, washed and waxed the whole bike.

Not the highest overall mileage, but this is after just shy of 500 miles.  Overall everything looks good and there are no issues with the rest of the bike.

This was actually on my full suspension Santa Cruz, but I ride the same stuff on the 057

So I had been planning on a building a china carbon road bike at some point, but I've also been  perusing my local Craigslist for bikes that are the right size and price.

Well, Friday I picked up a used 2001 Litespeed Classic.

29er / Just a couple Pics

Spent a little time cleaning, had some bad creaking from the BB over the weekend so decided I needed to do a little maintenance.   Washed the bike, checked for cracks, lubed chain, pulled/re-greased BB, compounded, then waxed.  All in preparation for a race I'm doing Wednesday evening where I just hope to finish, as I've been hurting on rides lately.

Not specifically before, but pretty close.

After cleaning, she's so shiny!

And some others.

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Disc Hubs
« on: April 22, 2015, 11:53:15 PM »
While I'm considering the disc brake frame Peter posted in the other thread, now I must consider hubs/wheels to go with it.

I don't want o spend the money of the DT Swiss hubs, and so far I'm very happy with the Novatecs 881/882s on my rigid 057, I'm looking to stick with a Novatec.

Right now I'm considering the 771/772 in 15mm 24 hole front and 12mm 28 hole rear.   They appear to be about 140g for the front and 279g for the rear.

Ill probably match them with 38mm front at 25mm width.  On the back, 50mm, maybe 38, on a 23 width.  That's the closest setup to the Enve SES 3.4

Shimano announced XT 1x11 with an 11x42 cassette that will fit on existing Shimano style hubs.

It's classified as M8000.

I'm thinking about adding a road bike to my stable and have a few criteria in mind, so I'm just starting to gather data and look at options.

1. Pretty sure I want to go with Disc brakes, why because I love them on my Mtn Bikes.
2. Want some that is an "Endurance/Sportive" bike
3. Can fit at least a 25mm tire, but would like to fit a 28mm if possible.
4. Will most likely go traditional cable controlled Ultegra groupo.

What I have found already.

I'm pretty sure I need to be on a 56cm frame, I tested a Cannondale Synapse, which had a relatively good fit, and a BMC Gran Fondo, which would need a lot of adjustment to fit, although I like the BMC bars.

So looking at geometry, nothing quite lines up to the Cannondale for dimensions, or at least that I can find.

Looking at a good blog, there are a couple choices, but not sure on them..

So what do people know or say about the options?

Fat Bikes / Borealis Bikes
« on: January 01, 2015, 12:40:51 PM »
My LBS is now carrying Borealis and if I didn't know better (I don't) I would swear that it's being made in the same factory as the XMIPlay stuff.  Almost the entire bike looks like a slightly enlarged 057.  The front triangle looks almost identical with the exception of the BB being fatter, the lower chain stays even look to be identical, just wider.  The only place that looks different are the seat stays, which look like a copy of a Specialized.

Had a discussion with one of the guys at the shop because I said it looks almost identical to my frame sourced directly from China, and he swears it's made in Canada or someplace in the midwest.

While I'm not in the market for a Fat Bike, I'm just posting to start a discussion.
