26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: John's 26er Build for the Kiddo
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:25:30 AM »
This thing is going to be white, and I mean WHITE!!

He gave me two options - White w/ green (which would drive the SID fork), and white w/ red (Reba).

Pulled the trigger today on the frame, a very slightly used Reba for $175, wheelset (WTB Frequency I19 rims, SRAM X9 hubs - claimed 1785g for the pair), and the drivetrain.

For those interested, I was able to find two 26er frames in XS on eBay.  The one I purchased is branded a FASTEAM but has no logos.  Sold by dashinebike1.  There was another that popped up today, FR-902 sold by cfbstore.  The geometry looks very similar, but the FR-902 has two things going for it - internal routing and BSA bottom bracket.

I did ask the frame supplier, though, if they included headset & BB - unclear because two different areas of the listing told me two different things.  If they don't supply those items, I will cancel and go with the FR902.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / John's 26er Build for the Kiddo
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:09:15 PM »
Well, after putting together my IP-057 last winter, and seeing my son start to dwarf his 24" Trek MT220 (and him being an awesome kid), we are going to start assembling components for a 14" 26er build for him.  He's 11-years old, so I'm hoping this bike will last him at least a few years, with multiple add-ons required to make it keep fitting, like setback seatposts and longer stems.  My rough math puts this at a 24.5" standover, and he was measured having a 25.5" "biking" inseam a week or two ago.

Goal is sub-$1500 with all-new components and sub 22lbs.  Here's what we're looking at:

Frame - FASTEAM? 14" 26er - $360 shipped http://goo.gl/pDgStv  I did take a look at the CS-016 frame, but the reach is very long.

Fork - Reba or SID, if I can get a good deal on one.  $250 budget

Wheels - Anything cheap & light.  He only weighs 65 lbs.  $250 budget

Drivetrain - XT 2x10 with 165mm cranks.  Currently debating keeping 2 in the front and selecting the 38/24 setup, or removing the big ring from the 40/28 and replacing with a bash guard.  Regardless, I'm getting the Shadow+ medium cage considering it's only a couple bucks more.

Brakes - Strongly leaning towards BB7's instead of XT hydraulics.  I don't seem to have any luck bleeding brakes, although this frame is external-route, so I don't have to cut/disconnect to route.  As I type this, I remembered another plus to the XT levers - adjustable reach for my little guy's hands.  We shall see.

Misc. - Carbon seatpost (excess cut off), used aluminum bars, shorty stem I had lying around from my build.

Going to sit with him this evening to sort out his most important part - COLOR SCHEME!  Frame comes in gloss green, gloss white, gloss pink (ewww), and matte black 3k weave.  Going to be doing a lot of eBay, Amazon shopping the next few days.

Nick, I too looked at the CS-016 as Peter has been great to work with, but check on the reach.  It's long.  Longer than my son's current 24" wheel bike.

Bumping an old topic..

I looked at the CS-016, and it has what I think to be a really long reach.  Peter sent me the geometry.

I'm looking at this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-painting-26er-carbon-fiber-mountain-bike-frames-with-headest-and-BB92-OEM/251755013728?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Dc719d72a0fef4cc5818d52ab7a0287e0%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D381487977309

Only thing I can think of negative would be the BB92.  Anybody else find anything I should worry about?

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: 29 or 27,5
« on: October 06, 2015, 08:32:24 AM »
My input -

Stick with the 27.5".  My experience was coming from an old 26" bike that I bought off Craigslist for $300.  I also had a few rides on a borrowed SS 29er.  I built up my 29" bike last year and now have a full spring/summer/early fall on it, and to be honest, I wish I would have gone 27.5".  I'm a complete novice, and I think the tradeoff for more "roll-ability" (29er) vs. maneuverability (27.5) was a lot more apparent.

That said, I love my 29er, and getting my skills up is just part of the game.

Can someone help me out with this whole BB92/BB30?  If I were to go with the eBay frame above, I assume I can throw on a set of Shimano cranks that work with BB30 and call it good?

I just now figured out that the XT double crankset comes in 165mm and you can get it 40/28 down to 36/22.  I may keep it a double, but may try a single (take off big ring, replace with bash guard).  Also, any issue using 10-speed chain on a 9-speed rear cassette?  I am going to try and avoid the m8000 XT stuff and go M785.

Nothing better than sharing the same passion with your kids. So much fun, so much joy. And your wife ? Doesn't she ride mountain bike ?

Absolutely - it's hard because we don't get the same amount of mileage in, and his 24" 13.5" wheel bike weighs 5lbs more than mine, so he gets frustrated on the hills.  That will be remedied when I build him is bike this winter.

As for the wife thing - tried it out, found it wasn't for me (divorced 5 years now :) )

Right now, he's 4'8", and I'm guessing he'll add another inch or two in the next 6-8 months.  I am also looking into aluminum, but I'm turning into a weight weenie :)

As for the BB92, I do not fear it, but if given the choice I'd rather stick with a BB30 or similar.  I did find the RaceFace Cinch setup (BB92, 30mm shaft), and 170mm cranks.  I can also go all the way down to a 26T drive - I have to do the math if I end up going 1x9, 1x10, or 1x11.  If I end up with 1x11, he's going to have a better drivetrain than me :)

That's a good idea on the 27.5 with 26 wheels - never really thought of that.  Any downside?

Okay, I know I've posted about building a bike for my son, but I'm getting more serious now and could use the collective help of you guys here.

I'm having difficulty finding a frame.  Peter sent me the geometry of the CS-016 in 14.5" and I wasn't enthused with the long reach (560mm ETT).  I found the following frame - http://www.ebay.com/itm/261539901827?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT - and the geometry looks a million times better, but only comes with a BB92 (press-fit).

For simplicity's sake, I was going to go with a 1x setup and mechanical disc brakes.  His current 24" wheel bike has 150mm cranks, and I expect him to grow another couple of inches between now and the start of next season, so I was going to go ahead and make the leap to 170mm cranks.

I fully realize the frame, fork, and wheels are likely sunk costs as he'll outgrow most of them in a few years, but I'm willing to eat that.  What I need help on is frame options - do you guys know of any other small/xsmall (14-16" frames) in 26er?

Just got back from a long weekend at Brown County State Park in Indiana.  Lots of flow, and lots of beginner stuff that me and my son (age 11) can handle.  The minute we got there, my son said "I want to ride up to Hesitation Point!!!" - 1000' of net climb on over 8 miles, and the last portion has some very rocky technical (at least to us) sections.  After some not insignificant "hike-a-bike", we made it and he couldn't have been prouder.  After a long break for snacks and refreshment of the legs, we bought back the 1000' with some of the "funnest" downhill sections I've experienced.

The second day was Limekiln, which is a short 2.2 mile section that the locals say is "downhill both ways".  We did this 4x for a total of almost 9 miles.

This is the last year on his almost 30-pound 24" bike - I told him this spring we'd build him up a Chiner 26" bike on the cheap..

Ruins along the way -

At the top, Hestiation Point -

As for my bike - couldn't have asked for anything more.  We were out here last year on my old Craigslist special 26" bike, and the Chiner made everything so much easier (guessing me losing 30 pounds helps too).  Rear axle keeps loosening up but I've now made it part of the pre-ride inspection so no issues there.  Bottom bracket is starting to creak so I'm going to have to investigate that, and I cannot bleed a rear brake to save my life so I'm taking it into the shop to get that done.

After The Ride / Re: what to build
« on: September 17, 2015, 07:26:15 AM »
Nick - we may be in a similar situation.  I rode a lot 20 years ago, then picked up the bug again about 4 years ago.  I bought an old Specialized 26er off Craigslist at that time.  I then dove in and built up a 29er HT last year.

All things considered, I personally wish I built up a 27.5.  The jump in handling from the 26er to the 29er was drastic for my novice skills.  This is based on the trails I ride as well - you should take that into account.

29er / Re: John's IP-057 build - first bike build ever
« on: September 17, 2015, 07:05:06 AM »
Wow, bump of a really old topic - haven't been able to access from work for a while (some IT-type stuff about "Categorization")...

After what amounts to almost a full season on my 057, I have to say I am very pleased with the bike.  I've fallen considerably, with a few of them being "bike flying in the air" crashes, and it's handled everything very well. Things I would have done different:

1) Gone with a 1x setup.  I've been doing a lot of research on next spring's project (read further below), and it is now definitely within my level of comprehension.  Remember, I had never so much as adjusted a derailleur or brakes before this build, so I was a little apprehensive when it came to sourcing parts.  Going with a full drivetrain/brakes groupset from Ribble was the easiest way for me to ensure I got everything I needed and that it all worked together.

2) Gone 27.5".  I'm a rank novice when it comes to the trails, and our trails around here make up for their lack of elevation change with tight turns and some technical stuff.  Coming from a 26er, the jump to a 29er (at least for me) was drastic in terms of bike handling in the twisties.

So.  What's next?

My son (age 11) and I have a long weekend trip to Brown County next weekend.  I just finished tuning up his bike (Trek MT220) for the trip, and I have some tires to throw on mine (Rons/Ralphs) and do a last-minute tune-up/shake-down ride.  We did the same trip last year, and he wants to start tackling some of the more difficult stuff while there.

Also, I'm finalizing plans to put together a bike for him in the late-winter/early-spring.  Peter sent me the geometry of his 14.5" frame, and the reach is remarkably long (560mm ETT), so I'm looking into eBay frames.  His current bike has a 21" ETT, so I don't want to go much bigger than that.  His bike will also probably have a better drivetrain than mine, as I spec'd out a RaceFace Cinch 1x crank with the XT 11-speed rear (11-42).  Also, I'm planning on going BB7 for his bike.

I realize it's a ton of money to spend on a bike that he'll only be in for a few years, but without going into details, he's had a rough year or two and he's an amazing kid.  Biking is our chance to bond, and I'm going to have him do most of the build on the bike so he can put in some sweat equity.

Pics from Brown County to follow...

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Re: Bad reviews?
« on: May 28, 2015, 05:49:47 AM »
I had two misses.  First, I was sent an incorrect size seatpost (ordered 31.6, received 30.9).  Second, they missed throwing in the chainstay protector.  Even though Peter had already left XMIPlay, he did everything he could to make it right by offering up shipping the correct post and chainstay protector - I turned down the post, as I had already bought one elsewhere.

That being said, I'm still happy with the overall process and I'm playing around with the idea of doing another bike for my son if any of these suppliers can come to the table with a 14"-16" frame.

Recommendations -

Confirm, then re-confirm the entire order before PayPal'ing any money.
Confirm, then re-confirm stock availability of the components you want.
See if you can put in writing that if anything is missed or incorrect, the supplier is responsible for making things right.  This may not hold any water, but can help - none of this "Customer pays shipping on missed/incorrect parts", next order BS.
