After The Ride / Re: 26 isnt dead...or is it?
« on: October 22, 2014, 07:59:14 PM »
My wife is 5'3" and resisted even demoing a 29er for a while.  Then she demoed one and liked it.  Now it's her primary bike.  We shipped the bike for a riding vacation so she got back on the 26er... and hated it.  Looks like we'll be getting rid of her old 26er bikes.  Would love to get her on a 650b and am eyeballing the IM-196 for exactly that purpose.

On the other hand, I've got an old Scott Scale 26er which was my only bike for a while, and I recently resurrected it as a singlespeed.  It's 18.6lbs, and once I got over the irrational fear that riding 26 would result in my immediate and painful demise, I'm actually having a bunch of fun on it.  Mind you this is a local trail that is not terribly technical, and I'm still nowhere near as fast as I am on my FS 29er trail bike... but still, I'm having fun on a bike. :)

For me, though, there's nothing except 29er in my future.

29er / Re: New Build - Crowdsource Forum Project

While the frame is visually copied from the Enduro, no doubt, don't forget that the Chiner frame is not a Horst link, with pivots above the rear axle on the "seat stays" and the rear axle on the chainstays, whereas the Enduro with the Horst link has the pivot on the "chain stay" and the axle on the seat stays. From what I remember of suspension technology, that makes the Chiner frame a 4-bar/swingarm design while the Specialized is the aforementioned Horst link.

29er / Re: IP-256SL Build: Three times the fun.

Wow, what a thorough writeup, it was fun to read through that!  Thanks for putting as much effort into the writeup as you did the build!

One comment I could make is re: the Stan's injector.  I've got one, always found it to be a pain in the ass.  What I find to be far more effective is Stan's own little 2oz bottles.  I've bought six or so of them, and each holds exactly one "standard sized" dose of sealant, so there's no need to measure it out.  Take out the valve core (stan's tool for that is great) and then shoot the sealant in directly from the sharp tip of the little bottle.  Then refill it from a big container of Stan's.  Easy peasy, so much less work than the injector.

Really loved all of your really clever and innovative pieces that you made through the build, as well.  Love the custom axle nut.

Finally, I didn't see any photos which really demonstrate the rear tire clearance with the 2.25" Ralphs.  Could you post one?  I've run 2.4" Ralphs in the past and love them but very few of my current frames clear them.  Mounted on a set of ZTR Arch wheels, they're about 58mm in the casing and almost 61mm across the knobs.  They "clear" on some of my frames, but any type of out-of-the-saddle shenanigans results in rubbing, which is not good.

Thanks again!
