Hallo,

I'm fairly new to bike riding (59 years old), but I've taken it into my head to build a road bike. Naturally I have a couple of questions, such as :

 what tools do I need?,
 would I be better of buying a complete set such as the one from planet x?.
 How do I know what frame to buy? I'm 6'2",
 do the chinese make a frame large enough for me?
 Can someone reccomend a video showing how to build a bike?

I really have virtually no experience of working on bikes, I've just got an urge to do this, and I'm hoping for some support from the members of this forum.

ParkTools makes good videos you can start with, here's the first of a series:


Even if it is about a mountain bike, it is a very good introduction.
You can then read the whole forum ;)

Tools will mostly be standard.  Allen wrenches, torque wrench, bottom bracket tool (either wrench or press), cable cutter

You'll probably be in a 58cm frame, you can go to real bike shop and do some demo rides to figure out your size.

Either way buying a complete bike or building is pretty fun.  So many options.

Do you want a full road bike or gravel bike?

If you don't have the knowledge, maybe a local forum member would help build it or a mobile repair shop (Velofix) will assemble for you.

It helps to know your local sorroundings. What I mean is be familiar with what your local bike shops have to offer. Like in my case, it is actually more economical and less hassle for me to buy parts on-line and take these parts to be assembled in a local bike shop.

Hallo,

many thanks for your replys. I live in Germany, I will be buying online. The whole point of this, is to build the bike myself, a bit of a challenge as I am a physically handicapped person :).
