Going Plus Size with CS-496
« on: March 28, 2018, 12:05:20 AM »
The package from Peter (Carbon Speed) just arrived this morning, opened the box but only to get the pair of tubeless valves. Everything else are still in bubble wraps (frame, fork, headset and axles).  Although I did see something I did not order... must be a freebie, a seatpost clamp. Thanks Peter!

But before that, I'm gonna go about my wheel set. This is not some really great or expensive stuff. It's more like testing the water plus the pair cost me around US$330.00 total. It allows me to get this project within a budget as I have another on-going project. What are included in the US$330...

1 pair Tutubi 40mm 29er rims
1 pair Tutubi boost hubs (f/r)
1 set Pillar 29er spokes & nipples (f/r)
1 pair Surly Dirt Wizard 29x3.0
1 roll duct tape (for tubeless conversion)
1 bottle sealant
1 pair tubeless valves (from Peter)
Labor for building the wheelset

The Tutubi (Dragonfly in Filipino) is made in Taiwan and just rebranded.

Pictures of weight (unassembled), I'm guessing this is probably the most important details you guys would want at this stage.

I personally think the rims are pretty decently weight, considering the price. The hubs on the other hand felt really heavy. Word around the local scene is that folks are ripping off the Chuppacabras for this tire, more of weight issues rather than performance, in my case, it was a package deal. The wheels are currently being build, should have the pics up by tonight.

The 15grams difference between the two SDRs is curious. I can easily overlooked the weight difference between the two rims but those tires. Hmmm.

Late update due to the Holy Week (Lenten Season Holiday). Actual frame weight was 1300 grams, which was pretty spot on with CS's listed weight (1300 +/-50 grams) ... no pic (I accidentally deleted it).

Full rigid carbon fork from CS was listed at 600 +/-20grams, actual weight, see picture.

After months of planning, it's finally done!

Total weight is 11.52kg, with a heavy wheel set. So far, enjoying the ride.

The white saddle kind'a look awkward on it. But it'll do for now.

Nice build.
Curious to hear your reviews on it and how it compares to other plus bikes you've ridden.

It's really my first venture to a plus bike. My only other plus experience is around the block with a sub-US$400 Sandugo Brusko 27.5+ bike. It's a homegrown bike (Philippines, picture below). The Brusko rides a bit funny, not that it's geometry was bad or something but rather because I came from over a decade of 29er. However, that short Brusko ride was enough to tell me I'm gonna like the plus bike. Short history ends here... that's also saying I can't compare it with other plus bike. I can only compare with my XC 29er that's build for light trails.

I haven't really rode it on trail, was supposed to but the rain kept me away. I did however rode it up a local paved road uphill that cyclists frequent. I'm using the same drive train (literally, transferred the whole group set from 29er to 29+) as my full rigid 29er XC, 38T ring with 11 speed XT cog. With the 29er on that climb, I got 2-3 cogs to spare. I used up all my gears on this plus bike. The thing is, it is a slow climber (as expected) but I was not out of breath. The biggest difference from my 29er is the rotational weight. Currently I'm not going that fast on flats (around 27kph) but I always get the feeling that I can go much faster. And my friend also had the same comment when he rode it around the block.

The big tires and dropper post are really confidence inspiring. I broke my self-imposed speed limit for going downhill by a dozen kph (from 40kph to 52kph) on it's maiden ride. It really felt I'm in control. I've still have to test it's maneuverability on trail though. But bottom line is I'm loving it.

Some pictures with the 29er XC with "wimpy" Treadlite tires.

Something funny happened when I took this bike on a short spin downtown a couple of weeks ago.

I got hailed by this female law enforcer about 20 meters from a security checkpoint. She wanted me to stop by the checkpoint for some scrutiny. About 10ft from her, she was all smile and said to me "Go ahead sir," and break into a chuckle as she continued with "I thought you were on a motorcycle." As I was passing by the checkpoint, I overhead her fellow enforcer asking "That was a bicycle? But those big tires... was it really a bicycle?"
