Handlebar / Top tube damage
« on: January 31, 2015, 01:39:48 AM »
What do people do to avoid this?
Surely not everyone can manage to setup their bars to avoid some part of the levers etc hitting the toptube in the event of a crash?
Why is there not a proliferation of limiting devices or headsets out there?  Canyon incorporate one on their bikes.

Any ideas other than wrapping the toptube?

Trek or cannondale had a knob or extension of their headset.  Handlebars would spin until the extension hit aprotuberance on the frame?
Maybe you can find something like that.
The negative is you may have to buy the headset that fits and then another with 'anti-spin' feature....I am looking for what I am thinking of.

Talking to one guy on the trail, he would tighten his levers just to the point that if they hit something, the levers would twist on the bar, saving the levers from breaking.  I would imagine if they were low enough to hit the frame as the bars spun around it would help there as will in a crash.

I believe, for both my Chiners, the bars clear the frame.  I like to sit a little more upright (XC style) with a few spacers below the stem and riser bars so  there is no direct contact between my bars and frame if spun around.

So my best recommendation is to set your bar height such that the bar end clears the frame.

Thanks for the input.  My bars don't connect, which is a pity!  As I use the Ergon grips they naturally provide a big rubber bumper that would be perfect.  It's the lever and/or shifter, and looking at the way they interact they are not going to twist on the bars so I guess it's fingers crossed time!

I did see at some point a headset that incorporated a locking part with two adjustable stops that prevented the bars swinging too far but cannot remember who made it.

edit: and what was lost was found..

I'm using a skean to avoid damage to my top tube.

Why are these not in every shop?  They're just the job and no real alternatives out there. Well spotted MTB2223!

I just use some clear silicone dots from a home improvement store. Stick it to the side of the top tube. Not sure how well it'll stay on when wet...but I'm in So Cal and it doesn't get wet here often. ;D

I picked up some flatter ones for the 062...whenever it gets here.
