256sl rear thru axle problem

Hi guys,

i'm asking for the proud owners of the 256sl like me for some help. My thru axle from xmiplay is not bolting properly. Besides that i lost the nut :(

What do you recommend as a replacement for the thru axle?

my problem is with the configuration of the dropout, i don't get why we need the nut, wouldn't it be simpler to just bolt into the dropout? :(

See if i can explain myself ;) I was thinking of buying one like the 2nd one you mentioned, but then to screw/unscrew it i imagine it would be a pain, because the nut is not fastened to anything, it would just turn on itself. You would have to turn on one side and secure the nut on the other somehow. Or am i seeing it wrong? Would that little side screw hold the nut?

If you put that little headless screw to tighten the nut you won't think about it anymore.
Mine is a DT Swiss axle.

I also use a DT swiss thru axle like the Shimano one linked. So more nicer.
I do agree about making the dropout threaded for the thru axle.

Has anyone tried the Extralite Shimano axle on their 256? I would love to see a picture of it on a 256.

it is an M3 screw.
Mine was 5mm long and entered entirely the nut.

I went online to McMaster.com and ordered a pack of M3x5mm set screws with a brass tip.  I installed one on both of my rear axle nuts on my Chiners.

What's the difference between the "soft tip" and one without?

The tip will confirm to the shaft when tightened down providing more contact area.

I just found out it was actually on/in the dropout, just hadn't noticed it. When in place, you can't see it. Tightened it, guess this should do the trick :)

Otherwise, might just buy the DT Swiss axle :)

Hey thanks for this link. Think I'll pick a couple of these up, as it seems like an improvement over the standard one
