at 50 you are young, I would always take the small frame. The big one only if your torso is very long
I can with 180 cm 58 riders but have 56 and am very satisfied with 87 cm step

I want to get this frame but I am not certain which size would best fit me (49cm or 52cm).  I'm 5'4.5 with a 29" inseam, 50 years old.  I am currently riding a Trek Emonda 2015 52cm with a 80cm stem.  I am leaning to towards the 49cm frame since the offset in the seatpost would add to the effective top tube length and reach.  My concerns about the 49cm frame is the low stack.  I'm not sure if my 50 year old back can handle such a low stack.

I been trying to figure out the biggest frame I can with and still trying to find. I have a 76 to 80 mm inseam. And I am 182cm tall. I have a very long spine. I might even have and extra vertebrae.

Amazing how much variance there is in inseam/height. I'm 3 cm shorter than you with almost 5 cm more inseam! How are you measuring your inseam? What is your usual saddle height? Based on your height I would say 56 cm but based on your inseam 54 cm (with a long stem).

I been trying to calculate the most ideal seat tube length. which is the critical factor. So wanting to max out that while trying to compensate for  seat post and saddle height.  I am lookin at 160 to 165 cranks as another way to give myself some breathing room. I think 520mm is the ideal seat tube length.   But an seat post with saddle slammed would be 60 to 80mm. So its 800mm(inseam) - 165mm(cranks) -  minus 80mm(seat/saddle) =555mm left over.  Which means I can fit into the 168 at the largest size with the seat slammed.  but I would probably want the 56cm for breathing room.  54cm with a lot.

I am also looking at the 218.  which I think that one would put me in  the medium size. just looking at the stack and reach. I think. The 168 is more ideal but the 218 is more fun.

Book/wall methoid. with the tape under my foot. and subtracting that.  I just remeasured and I am 79cm.  I got short legs. I am much more of a swimmer than a cyclist. I love swimming. I can do laps of literal hours.

I agree size 56 cm sounds like the best for you just to get the reach right for your torso while still having some exposed seatpost. I have size 54 cm and my saddle height (74 cm to top of saddle from BB) is higher than you, but I have a short torso and long limbs. Might want to get the separate bar/stem option so you can fine tune reach too.

for sure a 54cm to 550cm seat post, with a max of 56cm. And I think I am looking at about a 150mm to 160mm stem, depending on the handlebar reach.  I could pop my seat back 10mm and be 20mm cramped with the longest stem.

Well you can always use hobby files to open or angle the holes a little bit more. That's what I did with the carbon bar I just got. It was cheaply made and the holes were misshapen and uneven. So I slowly and thoughtfully reshaped them. Also wear a mask when you do.

Managed to get the cables routed through the bars after some filing and swearing.  But now when I try to insert my brake cables they are getting stuck somewhere around the stem. I'm guessing the housing is getting crimped somehow, it is very tight in there.   I will keep trying to work this issue, hoping I won't have to pull the housing out to check for issues

I have the FSA headset on order along with new bars and stem from Ali but who knows when that will arrive.

Completed my build the other day. Haven't taken it out on a real ride but a quick shakedown ride and the bike feels great so far. Didn't have any issues with the install although trying to run 4 cables through the integrated cockpit was a massive pain. Parts list:

Paint was done by VB and everything came out as I had requested it. The paint looks amazing and they did a really great job with the finishing. I do think the paint is a bit on the thin side as I've already got a small chip on the fork during assembly. not a huge deal but something to be mindful of when caring for the bike.
