TanTan Seraph TT-X34, FM639 or FM619
« on: August 17, 2022, 11:39:12 AM »
Hi there,
After i built a GR029 with my boyfriend a couple of years ago, I am looking at Road Bike Frames this time.

I am wondering if any of you has experiences to share about the TT-X34, FM639 or FM619.

What is important to me?
Disc Brake
Thru Axle
Clearance for decent size of tyres (minimum 28 mm / ideally 32 mm).

Officially the TT-X34 has 30mm, maybe a 32 fits? What I don't like too much is the fully integrated Handlebar (means that you can play only with the spacers) and the specific seatpost.

From a frame design point while I like both, I have a preference for the FM639/FM619 (same geometry only a bit different weight so I don't know what is the difference...).  Anyone has one of these frames?

currently I have the x34, I will measure tomorrow. I also plan on posting a review after I put some miles on it.

Looking forward to that review Nick!

The X34 is currently on my shortlist. The geometry suits me in a 52cm. Also like the look of some of the Velobuild options so will be interesting to compare your experience with others who have built the VB frames.

Kind Regards,

Mikey.

Looking forward to hear your opinion on maximum tire width. A full build and ride experience post would be great!

OK finally a decision was made to order a TanTan FM639 frame with handlebar.
Custom paint for 1 color is now around 100 US$ 2 colors 115 US$ and 3 colors 130 US$.

Are there any FM639 users in the forum that can share their experience?

The frame will be built up with Shimano 105 Di2 and Elitewheels.

for what is worth, I have a fm009 from TanTan and the building experience has been quite bad. It had a flaw on the rear derailleur hanger bolt, I had to fix it by myself while TanTan ghosted me instead of providing me a warranty service.

Sorry to hear you had a problem. This is my second TanTan bike (Gr029) and I am very happy with the first one. The FM639 has thru axles so I don’t think we would have a problem. In any case we have tools to align the hanger, derailleur ….
Will let you know how it goes

I've got an FM629, the rim brake version of the FM639.

The headset included was terrible, and the frame uses a non standard bearing depth for the top bearing, so you have to custom make a suitable spacer. Apart from that, the frame is great. However, it has a very slack seatpost (73 degrees) - be aware of that when considering the reach figures in the geometry chart. You might need to push your saddle fully forward to get it into the right spot if you don't normally run an offset seatpost (even though this is a straight seat post).

In terms of bike feel, the bike climbs beautifully. The steering is not very twitchy so it feels solid and tracks well even on the biggest out of the saddle efforts. But the flip side of this is that it isn't as sharp and precise on the descents, I've found it tends up understeering unless you force it into corners.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback and the heads up with the headset. Yes I realised the Seat Tube angle is at 73, considered it on Geometry Geeks analysis. As I have long legs I wnt with a slightly bigger frame so the saddle is not out that much. Having a higher stack should add on the more relaxed position. Happy the bike is not too nervous, while I love climbing, I am not the lightest so stability in descent is appreciated.

Hey man. With my experience i think you should go with  Winow FM166, which is better than TanTan. They also have FM237 for aero and FM238 look very similar with Elves Falath Pro (im check at their website and every number are the same, so magic. Maybe they OEM for elves).

SamSida the bike is for me, ChrisB is helping me building it. I have long legs and a shorter torso. My mobility is not extremely good neither. On top I like more classic style frames, only few aero frames are beautiful in my opinion.
Hence I have checked around and the frame that I liked the most, had decent tyre clearance and did not have a dropped seatstay was the FM639. Another point for Tantan was that they sell on Aliexpress, which was very useful a couple of times were the seller did not comply (on top of being happy with my first one the GR029).

I realised now that the same frame is available with Winow under FM219 but with Toray 800 instead of 1000.
At the end there is a limited amount of open mould and the same are probably used by many producers, this is the reason why you see a similar frame offered by different brands. But thanks a lot for your suggestions, I think it is very useful to have an idea of what kind of producers and frames are around!
