I was just riding along on a flat section of trails when I caught a vine, it grabbed my bars and I got thrown off to the side of the trail, I may have hit a log or branch with my shoulder.

Sorry to hear about your injury. You will recover and ride again. 13 months ago I crashed ending in a grade 3 shoulder separation, 2 cracked ribs, and a sprained neck. I healed. I still ride but not with the intensity as before. Keep your spirits up and you will get thru this.

Hate to hear it, CD. If surgery isn't required, then maybe it won't be too bad. Of course, any injury sucks..

I actually broke mine playing football when I was younger. Initial break wasn't too bad; It actually fractured perfectly in half and didn't shift at all.. The bone was perfectly lined up. The doctor put me in the standard clavicle brace and told me I could remove it to take a bath in a week. Bad idea. A week later, the moment I removed the brace I felt one side of the bone shift upwards and slide on top of the other side to where the two ends of the bone were overlapping about an inch. Hurt way worse than the initial break. Then when I get to the doctor's office they proceeded to try to reset the bone and that is when the injury really started to suck. Up until that point, and even after, it wasn't all too bad compared to all the various injuries I've had. I was playing basketball within a month and football within about 2 months.

Hopefully you'll have a speedy recovery from it as well.

Unfortunately for me I incurred an injury while mountain biking yesterday.  This time I have a broken collar bone.  X-rays show I broke it really good.  I won't know if I will need surgery for this break until Monday when I go see the orthopedist.  My right arm is in a sling right now, lots of swelling, bruising, and quite a bit of pain if I attempt to move my arm.  Hopefully I am in the 4-8 week recovery period if no surgery is required.

GAAAH, nuts! No! So sorry to hear this. You've only been back on the bike for a little while. :(

Heal up quick.

Surgery on Friday, having a flexible pin installed.  This has been a painful break as there is no way to fully stabilize the area when I move.  Good news is the recovery should be much shorter than it has been with my leg.

Feeling more like Wolverine with each surgery, maybe I need to change my screen name.

wow... that means this collar bone will become unbreakable.
Did you ask them what will happen if you are hit again in that area?
Does it have weaker spots that will bend?

2 of the bikers I usually ride with, have broken their collar bone recently too.
Several others had it in the past.
It looks a very common MTB accident.

Good luck with the surgery!

I think it's just a common injury, in general. Weak bone in a vulnerable spot, I guess. Maybe in the future, there will be an elective surgery for athletes where nanobots infuse graphene into the collarbone giving it 100x the strength. I was kidding when I started writing that sentence, but when I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised at all if that actually happens.

Okay guys, thought I'd post an update:

On 5/22 I went in for surgery to repair the broken collar bone (clavicle).  I was hoping they would be able to insert a flexible rod, however the bone was in too many pieces so they needed to go with a plate and screws, like what was done on my leg.  Here I thought having metal in my leg was enough, I have now doubled that amount.

On the plus side, there is no cast and I only needed to wear a sling for about a week after surgery.  Today I got the staples removed and am allowed to raise my elbow up to 90deg.  Things ache a bit but the pain is far better than before the surgery.  More good news is the surgeon was able to get everything back into perfect alignment with no gaps and after another two weeks the the bones should begin to fuse.  2-4 weeks after that the bones will be completely healed.

The hardware is intended to stay in forever.  So now in my collarbone I have eleven screws and one plate, in my leg eight screws, a plate, and a toggle.  That is a bunch of metal!

Holy staples batman! I've had my shoulder opened up for a labrum repair and my knee opened up to have new ACL installed. Blew my knee out 2 days before Christmas of 2013. Don't you just love these Christmas presents! Good luck with the recovery.
