I have an update regarding my derailleurs losing their ability to shift. I last wrote about this problem in reply #505 on May 12th 2025. On Monday, Sept 15th, it happened again. About 3 miles from completing a 60+ mile gravel ride with a lot of climbing and descents, near the bottom of a rougher downhill, I turned a sharp corner and discovered that both shifters no longer worked. (Not again!) I nursed the bike to the finish of the ride in a high gear, and scratching my head wondering why this has happened for a 3rd time!
At the end of the ride, when I told my buddies, I was again shamed that I have purchased a unknown Chinese product. The ride's finish was at a hotel where we would spend the night and ride a return ride the next day. I immediately got to work on getting the system to work again.
1. I linked the app to the derailleurs.
2. The 1gear calibration was in the 6gear position.
3. Both front and rear shifters would not shift.
4. I used the app to gradually step the derailleur into the highest gear, 1gear.
5. Calibration for the front derailleur was also off, so I stepped the front derailleur to its proper position.
6. My next step was to remove both batteries from the shift levers. I waited a couple minutes then put the batteries back in.
7. The rear derailleur acted like it wanted to shift, then I realized it was making small steps like the initial calibration in the app.
8. Then I saw that the blue lights on the levers were illuminated and the blue light was on the rear derailleur.
9. For some reason, the levers were stuck in calibration mode. I searched for the problem on the internet, and it said I should push the buttons for 3+ seconds and the levers should go out of calibration mode. (Or wait over 30 seconds and the shifters should exit calibration mode.)
10. I tried holding the rear shift button for 3 seconds and the lights wouldn't go off.
11. I was out of time, and my riding buddies were waiting for us to go out to dinner.
12. I took the bike into the hotel room, and removed the batteries again from the shifters so the levers could perhaps reset while we were at dinner.
13. 1.5 hours later I returned to the room and installed the batteries. WOW! All was back to normal, like nothing happened.
I started thinking about the conditions where the shifters stopped working.
I realized that on this high speed bumpy descent, I was trying to shift into my top gear. I am about 90% sure now that while gripping the handlebars, I had a couple fingers on the rear shift levers where I kept the buttons depressed for at least 3 seconds.
I believe that this put the rear derailleur lever into the "manual calibration" mode. then when I went to downshift by clicking the lever, the rear derailleur was set to a new "zero Calibration" position.
While riding the bike at speed, the last thing I can hear is the stepper motor moving one step, nor can I see the blue light in the levers.
I would bet this is what happened the past 2 times this happened.
I think this is a weakness of the EDS TX in that if you have to brake and try to shift, or are riding on rough roads, and you grip the levers and accidentally push a lever for 3 seconds or more the problems I have experienced 3 times happens.
One more thing I have to try to stay aware of while riding on rough roads, not to depress the buttons unless you are trying to shift gears...
