Cervelo R5 "tribute"- Tan Tan FM639 build
« on: December 10, 2024, 02:59:43 PM »
I still hate how we deal with photos here....

Anyways here is my first disc build....

Current weight- 7.05kg minus computer

Frame/fork- Tantan FM/FK639 (Cervelo R5 clone- tentative name = "Vega C5") - 950g 54cm frame, fork was 380g uncut, bike shop cut it. Chameleon paint; I can find code if people want. I'm pretty sure Tantan used my frame for photos.
Shifters/calipers/RD = Shimano Ultegra R8020
Handlebar- Tavelo Avro 380 x 130 - 347g
Seat- Ryet - 120g
Seatpost- Elita One 350mm
Wheels- GOZONE 45x30mm carbon spoke- 592/695g F/R
Tires- Conti GP5K TT 30mm, I want to say they measured at 250g/piece
Tubes- Ridenow TPU 24g
Rotors- Aliexpress stuff out of a drawer, 100g/piece + 6 bolt to centerlock adapters
Crankset- Quarq DZERO 170mm
Chainrings- Extralite 50/34
Bottlecages- AE XXX ripoffs, 15g each I think
Computer mount- Tavelo OEM, didn't measure

Had some mishaps on the first ride.... didn't tighten the saddle clamp and it came off on the first ride. Crank/BB had a 4mm gap so I had to 3D print some spacers. Other than that I really like it. Feels mostly similar to my old FM208, though the wider tires/lower pressure are more comfy. Tavelo Avro stem length is ~10mm longer than conventional and I didn't account for the 0 degree stem angle so the fit is longer/lower.... I like it though.

Only remaining parts are some weight weenie stuff.... ~60g rotors and ditching the 50/34 Extralite for a single 48T narrow-wide to run 1x. So far I really like it; need to take some nice photos as it's a beautiful bike. Good mix of modern stuff with a classic frame. I am waiting for the Chinese to get on board with the aero front/WW rear, I don't see the point of ~50mm deep seat tubes. Anyways better photos coming soon

Supernice. That is a very clean and well rounded build. Congrats!

What chain is that? If it’s one of those ZTTO chains from Aliexpress, beware. I had one and it was worn in less than 2000k despite hot waxing and cleaning it. All my other chains show no signs of wear after more than 5000k on each of them.

Yeah, on my first gravel build the chain lasted 1000km AND I had to replace the cassette because of that. Expensive mistake...

Measured brand new out of the box it was just out of specification (132,8mm nearly).
I was immediately refunded.

What did you pay for the frame if you don't mind sharing?

Frame is a size 54. I was debating going for a 56 as I wanted more reach but I prefer the more aggressive look. Chain is KMC

Cost wise, hmm let me tally it up. This includes shipping to the US.

Frameset w/paint: $735
Wheelset: $652
Tavelo bars were like $350 IIRC
Shimano mini groupset: $400
Quarq PM crankset: $500 like 6 years ago
Extralite chainring: $120
GP5Ks: Prob like $220
Lightweight rotors: $44
Elita One seatpost (x2): $44
Ryet saddle: $25
GOLDIX cassette: $129
Headset + BB: $70 or so

Total: $3289 + ~280 in labor. In retrospect I kind of wish I'd gone Di2; that would have saved another 200g and improved shifting. In fact I will prob do that next year. That, the lighter rotors and the 1x chainring should get me solidly in the 6kg range. In any case a big brand bike for similar money is like 8-9kg with worse components so I can't complain. That's why we go this route right? Lol

Overall though def pleased with the bike...... Im in the US so of course the weather sucks right now but I got my winter gear read and am looking to get some miles. One thing that became clear is my old bike def needs a tune up- might need a new headset and def needs work on the shifting. Not terrible though.

Finally got a fullish ride in. I really like it. It feels very snappy but it still holds speed. The integrated front really works. My average loop speed is about 18-19MPH and it took 10 less watts to do a 19MPH loop. Thats significant as my FTP is around 180 at the moment.

One thing I'm not crazy about is the handling, though honestly that might have been due to a flat rear tire. The rear end was just very squirrely, even after I reinflated the tire after losing air. Front was fine. Rear wheel is out of true so that might be a factor. I will see what comes of it.
