Carbon rims - Recommendations
« on: September 30, 2024, 05:09:03 AM »
Hi,

Going to build my own wheelset during the winter.
From which dealer would you recommend to buy?

My specs will be 45-55 profile, i will ride with 30mm tires and if it´s possible to get wavy profile rims that would be nice.
Budgetwise i dont want the cheapest ones and neither the most expensive since this is more for learning and to be able to build and fix my own wheels.

Peter from Xiamen Carbon Speed (XMC), active on this forum, definitely has that spec. You can email him.
I recommend Pillar cx ray or the cheaper Pillar wing 20 (pillar wing 20, not some other pillar model) as spokes, and house hubs, or novatec.
Get full T800 rims, it's worth it (not much of a premium, but definitely worth it.
Get brass nipples instead of alu if you ride in corroding environments (salt, rain, mud, crap, winter, commuting...). They make wheels / spokes more serviceable.

Farsports will cost a bit more, but they're the goat of chinese OEM stuff. Email them, dont use the website. Pretty certain they have that spec as well.

I've bought from both and recommend both.

Lots of other options, ofc.

Lightbicycle has great options in your spec. I recently built up a pair of wheels using deerobust rims and they are ultra light and have served me well, although I wasn’t too impressed with the finish quality, despite ordering the premium paintless finish

I also can recommend the Xiamen Carbon Speed (XMC) and conversation with Peter! Firstly, the contact is perfect, very professional and he has a lot of knowledge, 15 years in the business. Secondly, you can order and create whatever you want, they have a lot of stuff :)

Don't wanna start a new thread so maybe will Ask here. Do any of Chinese sellers offer very wide carbon rims like those new wide zipps?

I was referring to new zipp xplr wide for gravel which are 32iw/40ex wide. So wonder if any of our Asian friends offer something over 30mm wide internal and 40 externally

You sure you want them? From what I read, road/gravel tyres are simply not ready for such width. You are basically riding on a sidewall.

My friend has those rims and is extremely satisfied. If people run 28s on 26 or even 28 internal then there should be no problem with gravel 45s on 30+ internal

I've heard some stuff about that from the LTGP riders in the US. Super wide rim can expose more sidewall depending on the tires but idk, I have no experience with em.

edit: I remember the comment being about super wide internal width making it easier to burp the tire when cornering hard
