MYOG for Bikepacking: Tent and bivy sewing machines
« on: October 27, 2024, 11:50:07 AM »
Has anyone here purchased a commercial style sewing machine that works well for making/modifying your own tents and bike bags?   I am 1/2 looking for a 2-needle machine for modifying a bivy tent I purchased off of Aliexpress, as well as making my own ultralight frame center bags.

I have a regular Singer with multi stitch patterns that has worked OK, but I want to take my sewing of gear to another level over the winter.

I want something that will handle heavier duty stitches, like straps, but also sew Ultralight fabrics.
A 2 needle would be nice for folded seams, and could save a lot of time sewing.

Not sure this is the right place. There are dedicated camping/myog boards out there. Still interested to see what people recommend. When I sewed my down quilt (super slippery lightweight nylon fabric) on a cheap hobbyist machine, well, it kinda worked out alright in the end (after some getting used to), but I'd definitely like to upgrade as well ...

I have been searching and reading MYOG sites for several weeks now.   Lots of recommendations and comments on the larger known manufacturers like Singer or JUKI or PFAFF.   No recommendations for any machines from Aliexpress.    VEVOR?

I figure that there should be a few "MYOG fanatics"  here that have used Aliexpress to purchase sewing machines.

184 views and nobody here has sewn up their own gear with an Aliexpress purchased sewing machine?

Dang.  Why do I seem to end up being a pioneer having to be a guinea pig for so many Aliexpress store items.   :'(

Well... there are so many crappy sewing machines you can buy in a local shop. Absolutely legit. But they just won't do a lot more than simple woven cotton.. thin but not too thin.

Also from time to time the mechanic parts need some readjustment.
What if you buy a totally unknown machine ? Nobody will be able to do the readjustment.. and what if it's not working properly from the first day?
That's not a small screwdriver you just throw away, if it's not good. What you want is a very good machine.. sewing ultralight tent fabrics material AND being able to sew bag fabrics is nothing the cheap discount machines can do.
Also some more expensive fail in ultra light and/or heavy fabrics. This is something which should be tested  in a shop to avoid a very expensive fauxpas.
