The videos don't look like anything, but you could internally sleeve the fork steerer with aluminium or carbon tube if you're really worried.
For what it's worth my brother can flex a Cervelo S5 bar stem combo way more than that, up down and side to side twisting

Looking at the videos, it doesn't seem to flex to me...I don't even notice the gap at the back of the headset cover.

Is the C-ring you used for mounting the headset the one that came with the frame or the handlebar?

What model are the handlebars?

Yeah I'm not that concerned, I was trying to say the flex in the GCN video doesn't seem that bad. The C-ring came with the bike, but it looks like I used the one that came with the bars too in order to get enough of a gap on the headset cover. The gap I said I could see forming is tiny, I couldn't really pick it up on camera. The handlebars are bulagoe 380mm.

It could also be the seat clamp. Grease it according to these instructions if you haven't already...
The green stuff is grease and the black stuff is carbon paste.

I put grease and carbon paste with that instructions and for now it's quiet. I hope that solve the problem. I make 3-4km for now, I will be sure after few km more.

They're made of aluminum, not titanium, but if the color change appeals to you, go for it!

I ordered these for my different bikes. While they are alloy (titanium colored), quality-wise they're a step up from the stock thru axles on most bikes and they do look nice.

I have joined the SP-R088-club! Picked it up from the post office yesterday. My third spcycle frame.

I purchased it during the ali sale a month back. Got a size 54 in metallic paint color 12. After coupons the final price ended up at $495.95 inc. shipping to Norway.

Order was placed 16/3, shipped 26/3, and at my local post office 17/4. Shipping took a bit longer than usual for me, but the box was marked with UN3481 (battery) for some reason, so maybe it added to the shipping time, and of course easter.

Will get back with pictures when it is finished. In the meantime here are some weights for you nerds.

Tried to record the flex i see, hopefully these files attach correctly. The bike is in a trainer for these videos.

I get similar flex on my Condor (steel frame, full carbon fork) and my Tideace gr201. Worth noting that like in the GCN video there's a lot of tyre compression which could exaggerate how it feels and looks? I also noticed that when I compress it I can see the tiniest gap forming at the back of the headset cover spacer (can't think of the name) which would suggest the steerer is flexing slightly?

Undid stem to check and I have the metal c-ring (silver in colour) it's about 1mm thick by the looks of it, hard to tel

Thx for the videos. My movement is mostly left/right I feel (It's way more than on my other bikes). I will swap the metal c ring for a plastic one and try again.

When I ordered my frameset, there was no integrated handle bar option. So I just used the provided headset and c-ring that came with it. I still wonder why GCN was having issues even after switching to a separate bar and stem.

Yeah I wonder too. I noticed it when riding the first r088 that I build up. It felt a little ’wobbly’ I thought it was the intergrated bar and never worried about it. Sold that bike.

Now on my new r088 build I use a seperste bar/stem and I can replicate what gcn shows. Its just a question if that is actually a problem, or potentially even unsafe to ride? I’ll try and video it.

Did you use the SPCycle provided headset with c-ring and bearings? The headset I received was just a generic off-the-shelf component, but it's worked fine.


I do wonder if the R088 modified head tube design (from the SL8) might be a problem with certain frame sizes and stem lengths? Perhaps some head tubes might not be perfectly aligned, causing issues on certain framesets?

Quick heads up on tyre clearance
My front is 33.5 wam and fitted just fine.
Rear is 35.5 wam and fitted but there's not much clearance So may give it a spin with some tape on chain stays to see if I get any witness marks.
Gotta build it first of course

I did not weight the bike but who cares ? lol. With both rings (C-Ring & Crown Ring), there was a significant gap between the bottom headset cap and the frame, in particular with the Crown Ring. So I decided to use the C-Ring. I sanded it as much as I could and drilled a small hole to fit properly the HB17 handlebar. If I want to bend the HB and fork like GCN, I have put my full weight on it, so yeah, I will say there is no issue here.

My recommendation if you are picky :
- Buy a SL8 seatpost wedge because the one they provide does not fit well (it is a little bit bigger).
- Buy a SL8 seatpost cover, the one provided is garbage.

Is the seatpost new? On my frame, which I purchased in January last year, I have a different saddle mount. I saw it on Alix: https://it.aliexpress.com/item/1005009069060683.html
