AVIAN CR2 or Other no spoke hole Carbon Wheelsets
« on: February 25, 2025, 07:26:04 PM »
Hi all, first post.

I'm looking to purchase my first carbon wheelset to put on a Yoeleo R12 frame.

I have come across these wheels from Avian, https://avians.cc/products/avian-cr2-db-r310. The price is compelling at $499 USD, but I'm having trouble finding many reviews outside of a few Filipino riders putting them on their bike and saying they liked them (no close up quality review / analysis).

Does anyone have experience with these wheels or have any other brand recommendations for wheelsets that don't need rim tape?

Thanks,

Zenon

19mm is very narrow in this day and age and not suited to typical modern road tyre widths.

Most of the Chinese suppliers can build you a wheel without spoke holes - just message them on WhatsApp.

9velo's steel spoked road wheels have a solid rim bed.  I've put about 2,000 miles on a set of LV35 2.0's and I have been quite pleased with them.  They're stiff enough, and they were by far the easiest wheels I've ever setup tubeless.  I had to do some minor truing after my first few rides, but since then, they've been solid.

Great catch, I hadn't even noticed that. I Think they may have adapted their wheel from a rim brake to disc, as I've seen older reviews of the CR2 in Rim, but it doesn't appear to be offered anymore.

Thank you!

Are you referring to this model? https://www.9velo.com/products/9velo-2024-road-disc-lv-20-series?VariantsId=10654 They appear to be about double what I was hoping to spend on Avian, but I'm now considering reaching out directly to manufacturers for no hole quotes on other models.

My friend, message Peter from Xiamen Carbon speed at +86 182 5080 8148 and tell him Serge le Magnifique sends you :D
He can sell you a better wheelset than that for about the same price.
Width matters, but ofc, make sure a modern wide rim would fit in your frame. Ideally you'd run a 33mm rim with a 28 or 30C tyre, for example, but that assumes your frame can legit clear 32C, which is not a given. Either way, consider chatting with Peter, i bought yet another wheelset from him last week, 33mm wide, 50mm deep, sapim cx ray spokes, brass nipples so that my friend never has problems with maintenance, salt, grime and so on, T800, and no holes in the rim bed.
As it sounds you're new to the scene, keep in mind that "nobody" should be riding less than 28C road tyres for a multitude of reasons, and that on a wide rim, a 28C will measure more than 28mm, and that aero wise, rule of thumb, you want the measured width of the tyre to be a bit less than the width of the rim.
And be sure to spend money on good tyres (gold standard being Conti GP5000) with TPU / latex tubes, or tubeless if you're brave, because it's the single most transformative thing you can do to a bike (going from bad tyres to really nice ones). This isnt marketing, it's (unfortunately) true.
Fast on the flat. And nowhere else.

Thanks for the wheel connection and for the tire advice  ;D with the advice that you can ask OEMs to make when sets without holes, I'm now back in touch with LightCarbon and they have confirmed that they can make the wheels without holes  :)

I'll check in with your contact, but I've had a good experience with LightCarbon and understand their product QC and quality standards well from their and others documentation.

Thanks again all!!!

Yo I'm a Filipino and I am using their CR3 model for my CAAD10 rim brake bike.

Yes, the internal width is narrow compared to today's standards, but I've never had issue with my set except when I had to replace the nipples and a spoke after riding it for 2 years.

still going strong though and I'm running it tubeless. the rims are stiff and responsive enough for me especially when riding out of the saddle.

it replaced a set of jetfly's because they're too flexy for my liking

Nice to get some more feedback around the avians :) I'm curious why they are so popular there haha.

Before realizing that you can ask for alterations to specs on websites, for little extra, I had excluded some other similarly priced wheels that I'm more comfortable purchasing over Avian.

Glad to hear that they are treating you well though :)
