Author Topic: Frame protection for dropped chain, chain suck, chain slap, etc.  (Read 6103 times)

Any tips on preventing a big gouge in the bottom bracket area and scratches along the chainstays?  I'm planning to use a 2x10 setup, and I'm sure I can find a way to get the chain in contact with the frame at some point.

I was planning to use the 3M mastic tape on the chainstay.  Should I also put some around the BB, or is there a better solution to protect from a dropped chain or chain suck, short of never getting the bike dirty?

I haven't had a dropped chain or chain suck, or any chain problems for that matter, since I switch to my XX1 setup.  However, I did put some clear Gorilla Tape on my chain stays because my heels will rub the chain stays sometimes.  Gorilla Tape is thicker than regular clear tape and has a very sticky adhesive.  It's the cheapest clear paint protection I have found.  If you want something a bit thicker, but more expensive, I've used the Lizard Skin chain protector, it works well.

Although, the cheapest solution is to wrap the chain stays with an cut up old inner tube or rubber rim band.  I've don that as well, cheap and easy to do.

Yeah I say don't stress it too much. That said, the 3M tape you mentioned is the best way to go from what I've read. Never actually used it myself.. but it's what I plan on using when my chiner is ready for it..

The Frame Guards from AllMountainStyle are also nice: http://www.allmountainstyle.com/collections/frameguards
I wish they were also available in white, but not :(

those are pretty sweet...look better than the Trek kevlar guards.

For chainstays and elswhere there is a clear gorilla tape Ive seen people use. Lizard skins are good , but had I known about clear gorilla I would have gone with that.
