The problem with wheels like this is that it's only useful for Kona because of the rules (which are stupid) and everyone in Kona has enough money or sponsorships to get a wheel like this from more mainstream sources. Full discs already have a low customer base and this is an alternative that is worse in just about every way.

IDK, I bet triathletes will buy it because it's what the pros use.

Consumers aren't rational, and the logical case for something like this is no more nonsense than the people clamoring for an aero endurance bike, or really anyone buying an aero bike without investing also in position optimization for aero.

That said, I was surprised to see that both Light Bicycle and DFS are selling a wheel like this.

edit: i should also mention that amateurs also do participate in the Ironman WC @Kona. I know a few folks who self-funded their way there. Yes, at that point, they are not paying retail for a lot of things and have spent a crazy amount of money to train and get there, but they are still paying.
