how much torque do you have on the top cap(headset preload) bolt? I had to crank it up quite a bit just to get rid of the play while rocking the bike back and forth but i can still feel some play under heavy braking.
The original compression ring is aluminum, very thick and probably requires a lot of force to compress. I feel like at this point the torque is already beyond of what I would consider acceptable.

The c ring is not a tight fit on the steerer tube. I couldnt get headset preloaded until after I wrapped the steerer with aluminum foil

I think my top cap is bottoming out. A combination of a headset compressing and a shitty expander plug pulling out of the steering tube sligtly results in some preload but not enough. I added a spacer and will see if it helps.

on a different note, after some 400km on this frame I have some initial impressions.
I think the frame is solid but it's not ideal for the riding I do and it mostly comes to two things: tire clearance and a seatpost design.

The frame can barely fit 50mm tires and I actually had to shim the derailleur hanger to mount the wheels as my conti hardpack 50c just would not fit. And that's a semi slick tire with no knobs in the center so fitting any kind of an XC tire is out of the question.
Now the seatpost. I like how it looks but that's where the positives end. It's has a deep-ish aero shape which in my experience results in quite a punishing ride feel and since you can't really go crazy with a tire size there's no way to remedy it without dropping the pressure lower than I would have liked.
For context I ride a lot of rocky gravel and singletrack with roots. I switched from the lightcarbon lcg-071 and I admittedly regret it a little.

It would probably work best as an all-road rather than a pure gravel bike

Hi, This is my third Velobuild and I am having some issues with the handlebar for the first time. I can't remove some side to side play. It only happens to the right side and only when I stand up on the pedals pushing hard. Stem bolts tighten to 7nm and cap bolt by feel.

Are the top and bottom headset bearings identical and interchangeable? Or each one must be in its right place?
The hidraulic brakes cables are a little bit too tense pushing the C shape spacer to the right side. Could it be the reason?

bearings are the same top and bottom. I dont think the cables could do it. Double check if headset is well compressed, especially if bearings are well on their place.

VB shipped the frame without sending me a picture beforehand. I chose a paint job from a factor vam and they made a clownish paint job, which you can find in the VB-gallery (blue/purple/orange).
They say it looks the same... After countless mails back and forth they won't admit that the paint job is not slightly how it should be.

I know it is a cheap paint job and you can't expect too much from it. But VB shows again that the customers opinion more or less does not matter.

Please be careful with custom paint jobs and be sure to get a picture of the frame before it is shipped!

That honestly looks ok to me.

I asked for a simple matte beige/ sand color and velobuild gave me the worst paint job Ive ever seen. Looks much more pale yellow/piss color in person. I painted over it already and did an ok job.

Did you communicate colors code to velobuild? after first mock up I communicate them the pantone of the color and color painted was as expected

I did. I chose a dark purple for the top tube. They painted it blue instead.

Did you read my post before? I said, that I know what I paid and what I can expect. The use case of the forum is to share experiences. Well I had bad experiences and I shared them. Do what you want to do with this information.

They did much better than anyone should reasonable expect. Props to velobuild for that paint job. Meanwhile I had a much more simple request and I got fucked by velobuild
