zipp gravel tires are vastly different from normal standard tires on thread width, puncture belt and full bead width. They don't allow just any 40mm tire on their xplr wheels but only their dedicated tires. Using normal 40mm tires on 32mm+ iw wheels is mostly okay in tests (yeah they won't get rip off anyway) but they balloon up too much (meaning the badged spec useless and aero penalties) and the cross section layout would be sub-optimal from the tires' original design which results in RR penalties.

I just checked the Zipp G40 XPLR 40mm. It has the same unmounted tread width like the Michelin Pro 5 at 45mm. Sure the casing width is more (89mm vs. 107mm), due to the 40mm specification. Which looks like more or less average in the 40mm tire cat. I don't see much information on the puncture belt.

From BRR on the G40 Zipp tires:
The weakest point seems to be the puncture resistance of both the tread and sidewalls. The low scores here are probably also partly attributed to the "fishnet" style puncture protection that will only work well on punctures bigger than 3 mm.

Regarding the other claims:
True, the specified tire width is different than the actual one on a wide rim. Acc. ETRTO standards the normal inner rim width for a 35mm wide tire would be between 17-20mm.

Aero penalties of wider tires is rather small (less than aero socks delta). Afaik it's 3,6W for each 10mm of tire for a pair of tires at 30kph. But I could not find any data on aero testing for wide tires with wide aero wheels.

Regarding the RR penalty on the wider rims, I quote BRR again:
Peak rolling resistance performance seems to be reached when the rim width is somewhere between 65% and 75% of the specified width of the tire. Our other conclusion is that a rim width that is within 50 to 80% of the specified tire width results in performance that is within 99% of peak performance. Only when the rim is narrower than 50% of the specified width of the tire, performance starts to drop-off at a faster rate. The drop-off is small as you'll still get 95% of peak performance when the rim has a width of only 30% of the specified width of the tire.
My tire-inner-rim-width combination is at 82% is a bit out of the optimal range (65..75%), but I lose around max. 1% of performance in that regard. This would result in a penalty of 0.276W (for both tires). Is this worth mentioning? I guess not.

Please let me know if you find valuable information on the topic or correct me if I'm wrong.
But other than that your post doesn't include much information and seems like a opinion rather than a facts.

That is OK. Hope you will get your new wheels soon and love them as always. Looking forward to you guys' reviews.

Hi

Long time lurker on the forum here.  I just wanted to give some positive feedback.

I ordered a wheelset from xm carbonspeed and have been in contact with Peter via whatsapp.  His communication has been truly exceptional, sometimes even replying when it was well after midnight on his side.

It was a pleasure to do business with them.

Thank you Peter!

Kind regards,
Christoff

Hi Christoff,

Sounds great—what kind of bike and tires are you riding with the wheelset? If you like, feel free to upload a photo. I always enjoy seeing new inspiration.

Thanks, and have fun with the wheels!

Hi

I have an s-works epic 8 with flight attendant that I’m building up as a drop bar for long distace gravel type races. I have asked Peter to build the wheels on mtb boost hubs. I usually use thunder burt 2.1 or 2.25 tires. I just have to figure what stem lenght to use. Fingers crossed the fit works out nicely!
I’ll defenitely post some pics as soon as I have received all the bits and have it set up.

Your ti bike looks awesome!

Cheers

You can check the website for an initial assessment:

https://www.xmcarbonspeed.cc/products/carbon-speed-t1100-carbon-700c-53mm-depth-325mm-internal-41mm-external-width-gravel-wheelsets-with-titanium-spokes

Then I would recommend contacting Peter directly via email or WhatsApp to clarify the exact wheel set specifications (carbon layup, hubs, spokes) – you will then receive the exact price including shipping. The ones from the link are the highest specs/most expensive, I think.

If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact me.

To add to this, since a couple of weeks our Dutch selling point for XMCS is live @ www.xmcs.nl. Official partner of XMCS :).

Obviously if you’re not close to the Netherlands you can just as easily contact Peter himself directly. We can help out on any questions on the products and ordering process etc in any case.

Are those 2.1 thunder burts? How wide do they measure on these wheels?

Thanks for sharing, guys – I'm impressed by your bikes. They all look stunning - great work. A few nerdy questions

@Bambelbie, The bike looks great, the whole setup seems very balanced, hats off! How do you like the Altera? I'm also considering another gravel frame that's a bit more race-oriented. Do you think the Altera could also be used for cyclocross (with different wheels)? Is it agile enough for that?

@Grailer,Great build. I like your bottle holders. Can you tell us the model?

@darario Really nice build. I love that purple! Does the Magene PES fit into the frame without any problems (I'm thinking about the chain line/q-factor)?

@Uberflo, You went all in. Awesome! Carbon spokes and titanium freehub, right? Mega. Do you want to use the wheels for gravel or more for all-road?

@radrick_91
i do like it very much. as of cycleX ...I am no expert in this special discipline...I did some X with my MASON Bokeh years ago.
but nevertheless the Altera is versatile: I also rode it with 35mm slicks on the road and it has mounting ports for a rack for bike packing. my only small complaint are those bento-boxes for storage...imo too small to put "real" items in as the opening cut out is quit narrow, so you might struggle to get your things out again.
